Korora's companion is a penguin, but not just any penguin. He's called a "little penguin," the smallest species of penguin, reaching only 13 inches tall compared to the emporer penguin at over 3 feet. His name is Matao, Maori for cold.

Korora and Mateo have a rather strange bond. After all, she's a horse- and he's a tiny penguin. Even if they seem incompatible though, Korora and Mateo are the best of friends. Often Mateo will chirp to Korora, and she will nod and neigh back- they seem to be talking to each other. Korora will even give Mateo slow rides on her back, showing how a powerful creature like her can be gentle and caring enough to do something like that. At night, they both curl up in a stall together, and dream of what adventures are to come tomorrow.
