Show Name: The Lucky Frenchman
Barn Name: Félix (French for 'lucky' and 'successful')
Breed: Percheron
Color: Dappled Grey
Age: 4 years
Gender: Stallion
Fact no.1: Félix was born and raised on a specialised breeding farm neighbouring the Huisne river. This particular river is said to be the birthplace of the first Percheron horses, which has made the area central to the conservation of these beautiful drafts.
Fact no.2: When he was first imported into the UK at the age of two years, Félix was intended to be trained as a demonstration horse, ploughing fields on display farms to educate people on life before machinery. However, he didn't quite make the grade, so was sold off as a riding/show horse, since his conformation was very good.
Fact no.3: During his first winter back on my farm, Félix spent most of the day playing in the snow with his favourite blue jolly ball. Snow splattered everywhere as he kicked it up with his huge, heavy feet. Some of this snow splattered onto my cat, Brutus, turning him into a snow cat! He recovered, though I still laugh about it to this day.
Other: You did a wonderful job yet again, Teresa! I also wanted to provide three facts about the breed, if that's alright:
> There are many theories to the origins of the Percheron horse, though no one can see which of these is true. It is certainly believed that some Oriental blood is involved (mainly Arabians), but there is also speculation to the influences of Breton (a breed of French draft) and Spanish blood (Andalusians, etc.)
> In the 19th century, more Arabian blood was added to the Percheron to make the breed suitable for military purposes, hence they are lighter and less stocky than other draft breeds.
> By the 1930s, Percherons accounted for around 70% of the USA's pure draft population, with a population of over 30,000 Percherons alone. The Belgian was second to the Percheron, with a population of about 10,000.
