short story under 800 words:
"Time for bed, Rio." Mother's voice reached his ears, making him look up from building his 'castle'. "But I havn't finished yet." He chirped, flattening his ears as he smiled. "You can finish your fort in the morning." Mother soothed, brushing the young Bean into bed with her tail. He nestled under the blankets, peeking out from the sheets to peer at his mom. "Tell me a story, about the Birds of Rio." Mother smiled, the edges of her mouth curling upwards as she thought about the tale of the bright birds. "But you've heard it many times, my dear. You know how it begins and ends." The Jelly Bean Dragon twitched his ears. "But I love it, mum. It's wonderful. Please?" Mother sighed in defeat.
"Once, long ago in the forests of Rio de Janeiro, the most beautiful place in the world, there lived birds." "But not just any birds." Rio quirked, wiggling his toes.
"Yes, not just any birds. But birds with feathers so beautiful, so enchanting, they could make you live in that forest forever. With feathers of bright gold and blue and green, orange and yellow, purple and pink, and even colors our eyes havn't seen. They flew through the forests, casting rainbow shadows across the ground, and making the world a better place. Once a Jelly Bean Dragon wandered into the forest, with the name-"
"Tullo." Rio breathed. Mother nodded, grinning. Her little bean knew this story by heart, yet insisted she tell it.
"Tullo saw a big, black crow, ugly and beastly, flying towards the beautiful birds he loved so much. Tullo leaped at the crow, tackling him to the ground, and the crow panicked and flew off, scared of such a mighty Jelly Bean Dragon. The birds of the forest thanked Tullo for saving them from the Crow. They blessed him by giving him the colors of the most beautiful bird there. Tullo was so happy, he trotted back to his home to show the other beans his new colors."
"And Tullo passed his colors down, right?"
"Yes, little Rio. He passed his colors down all the way to you. Thats how you got your beautiful pelt. Now get to bed, little one. Dream of the birds of Rio. Goodnight, my little warrior."
