Your daring sense of exploration pays off; as you shimmy up the rafter, keenly aware of the sheer drop if you fall, you arrive in a hidden loft-like space. Far below you, Ube and Anemone watch cautiously, hoping that you will find something worth the risk. The macaws have been here at one point, and as you gather up the feathers from the floor, something shining emerges from the dust. You have found a maximal line edit!

Sitting amongst the others was a site to behold. Several cats from many parts of the vast ecosystem revealed their inner spirits of participation. Lined up one by one the fur bristle in an anticipation as the crowd silenced. A contraption or feline arose from the midst of the festivities to dictate the instructions of this game. Tana along with her brother and a tag-along Ajwa leaned in close and remembered, recalled and imagined every single rule. This was a custom to the gang as they always took part in observation towards a leader figure.
Finally, the leaf fluttered in air for only a fraction of a minute and yelps and cries of joy could be heard from all the groups. Tana turned towards her brother to immediately strategize their next movements before rushing into unfamiliar territory, “Santol how should we proceed? It seems that there are two collections of felines; one heading in the direction of the cliffs and the other towards that strange bitter material construction.”
Santol could only shrug as he too wasn’t understanding the surroundings, but lucky for the both of them there was someone who knew more than he was letting on. ”Do not fret Tana and Santol, I know the cliffside area. May I suggest we head in that direction?”
A smile of relief lifted from the shy Santol’s face as his eyes still clung to his sister. Thankfully, she also would purr in agreement and ask Ajwa to lead to way within the rocky stone formations. Darting his way forward Ajwa kept his ears perked and pin-pointing his direction as every pebble caressed under his pink pads. Dry dusty dirt and tiny clumbs of grass were all that lay upon the floor, but what lived within the stretched landscape was no other than massive limestone, sandstone, granite and other minerals alike stacked higher and higher the deeper the group traveled.
”Has anyone found anything interesting? Remember we are looking for blue feathers.” reminded Tana as she was seconds behind Ajwa. Ajwa’s ears pinned back as he nodded in understanding and waiting to hear anything from Santol. Unfortunately, Santol had not replied. This worrisome lack of response made Ajwa turn him frame around to see Tana shuffling her paws in the ground and Santol only a speckle of gray in a terracotta color.
Shaking his head in disbelief that his brother couldn’t keep up with the group he noticed that Santol had been shuffling his paws in the cracks of some stones. Slightly confused Ajwa retorted, ”The group is further ahead there Santol, why sharpen your claws in a time like this?” Tiny clouds of rusty smoke forced out of the crevasse to reveal Santol’s new and improved hazel tinted coat. Alas, that wasn’t the only change as ragged feathers white in color lifted from his jaws.
”Santol! Good job on hunting down some feathers, but those aren’t blue –“ Tana’s disappointed expression prevailed.
The curious gray cat wanted to keep his newfound treasures but gave up as the task wouldn’t be completed with these leftovers. Carefully he put down the bird parts and dusted a little dirt over them to keep them from floating back into the air. ”At least now some birds can have them for a nest?” redirected Santol matching his sister’s disappointment. Ajwa’s put his paw on top of Santol’s head consoling the first find that this trio collected and calmly motivated them, ”You are very kind Santol, and let’s put those paws to more use up a ways okay?” Smiling Ajwa started his way back in the direction they originally were heading with Santol now up on his heals and Tana swaying her figure side to side just happy to be on this new adventure.
As the night set on the first day Tana, Santol and Ajwa curled up together for warmth snoozing until the sunrise beamed upon the tiny sapling that was sparce, hidden and crowed by stone. Santol awoke first yawning his first daylight breath. His lengthy position interrupted by allowing his back legs to outstretched and his front legs to fall forward. Muscles shook as the large male tom-cat lifted himself and awaited for his family to do the same.
Hoping to get a new start to his previous failure, Santol sniffed around the dirt and rock crevasse once again in hopes of a better host of feathers than before. The crumbling and large chunks of sediment must have caught the eye of another in the competition. ”Hello?” spoke a shy, tiny kitten barely able to fend off predators on his own.
In response, the tom shuffled his head out of two rocks and noticed the tiny kitten and smiled, ”Why hello there. Are you in the games as well?” He questioned as to watch the kitten’s body language. Strangely, it shifted it’s paws as to show he felt that uncomfortable with the interaction. To show ease Santol continued to speak, ”If so we could really use a strong cat to help us out, so far we only found a few feathers and I’m having trouble finding anymore. What do you say?” Not even having to ask the perk of ears and wag of tail was the perfect sign that this little guy was happy to help.
At this time Santol looked back at his previous work only to see something shine in the single beam of light that flooded into his hole. It was a feather! Happy he smirked a bit and looked towards the little one, Why don’t you look into this hole here? I can’t see a thing.” lied Santol.
The kitten attempted to lift his little frame upon the stone and could only make it upward with the help of Santol’s nose pushing him forward. Carefully the small feline climbed into the abyss and looked around. ”I don’t see –“ proclaimed the kitten until it happily chirped as his mouth grasp the slightly unburied feather! ”Look look!”
Acting shocked Santol proudly helped the kitten out of the dark dirty hole and witnessed the first blue feather of the day. ”Good job! See I knew we needed you to help us, glad you stopped by when you did. You know what, why don’t you hang on that feather and come with us?”
Not too far away stood two felines watching the kitten with protection in their eyes. Santol being bright and keen on his surrounds (at least this time.) ”Why don’t you ask you’re parents over there if they could join us? We could use more cats in our group.” Nodding, the kitten dashed off with the feather, of course presenting it to his mother first and then his father.
Even though the kitten didn’t speak too much to Santol he already knew that this would be a friendship he would cherish and honestly, he really enjoyed getting to know the kindness that the other cats shared. At the very least, this kitten was happy to see him and that’s what he needed at the time.
Tana and Awja finally awoke from their naps to see that Santol had found some newcomers to help around the area. After explaining themselves and Santol happily reporting his new friend finding a blue feather they all head towards the clearing in hopes to continue this brigade.
Santol took the back of the pack lineup and witness the kitten close to his side as he parents were right ahead of them. Tana was in line before the parents and the leader of the group was Awja who was at the very front. Keeping an eye on his new friends and family.
As the team heads into the open-wide area the once heavily populated cats foraging around them weakened and all that stood guard was more iron works further west of them and east was a riverbed. Unsure of which approach they wanted to take Ajwa spoke loudly for all to hear, ”What would everyone prefer? The riverside or the cityscape?"
The kitten pointed his paw towards the river and of course the parents were letting their “leader” take charge. Santol agreed and to be fair he was avoiding the terror of the sharp objects that stood west of them. Tana was not one to fight or disagree, so she voted for the river and with that Ajwa’s mind was made up.
One by one each paw burned under the sun as the could feel the cool breeze from the water’s edge. It’s inviting vegetation hugging the sidelines and alage tinting the water a hue of green. The smell was fresh, crisp and heavenly. Tana the most excitable (besides the kitten) of the group rushed towards the rocky side and jumped into it. Water splashed onto Awja’s bare skin and made him a bit unhappy with her but glad to see her enjoying herself.
Santol nudged the kitten towards the splash zone and then slowly walked into its wake. His large, long fur heavy with water but nevertheless cooled down and happy for the new more familiar sight. It was a beautiful site to see that all the cats were getting along and taking a much-needed break to ease the aches and pains.
It was the late afternoon and as the sun was highest in the sky. Ajwa watched his family and friends play in the water while also searching for most importantly feathers. Suddenly the wind started to pick up and the once calm waters began to rise and fall quickly with no regard of the guests. Ajwa noticed this strange incident and picked up his booming voice to address, ”Family, Friends! We must evacuate the water way now. The rise in water and wind speed will be too much to handle and can cause issues.”
Santol immediately got out and headed towards Ajwa who was resting a bit away. He wasn’t much for getting his fur wet. While Tana was just fishing her calico frame out of the water’s edge holding the kitten Anemone. She placed his little body in front of the mom who silently picked up her kitten and walked towards the group.
Without warning as Tana was about to follow her clan she noticed some cats hadn’t gotten out of the river’s bank. She shouted and hoped they could hear her. The wind continued to rush and sweep the tree lining and leaves tumbled within the sky, ”Everyone, you need to get out of the water!”
Her pleas were useless as her voice couldn’t carry in this event. Looking back toward her group for just a second her rush toward the other cats in order to give her message again. Speeding as fast as she could she noticed a white frame floating in the bank. It didn’t look like any sort of flower or rock. She pinned her eyes towards the faint figure and realized it was a cat!
Jumping into the water wasn’t best move, but it was all she could do to save what little life this cat had if any. She grasps her teeth onto it’s flank pulling he or she from the water enough to get its head above. However, this wasn’t enough for one cat. Tana struggled to keep her own body afloat as she saved another and kept bobbling in the river’s depth. The shock, horror and reality of these games is that weather happens and nothing can protect them from this.
Trying to scream and yelp for help Tana could only pray that her family could hear her muffled screams. Her feet dug at the saturated watery tomb and continued to push past her limits. Seconds seemed like minutes as she could feel water enter in her mouth. Scared and weary she closed her eyes and thrusted her body against the current pushing the object she held forward onto the bankside. Success! She was able to get the limp frame upward but still was in terrible danger.
”Help, someone help!” she continued to scream as she swayed her body against the rocks, stones and driftwood. A flash of gray dove into the water and just in time as Tana was diving into unconsciousness herself. Luckily her scruff was bit, and both were able to escape the unforgiving river.
Gasping for air Tana didn’t have time to explain and ran over to the almost lifeless body. Being slightly disoriented she pressed her paws on its belly in hopes to wake up what might not be woken up. All this effort had to be for something, and Tana wasn’t going to give up even in the midst of a monsoon.
Santol kept the cats head elevated and darted his eyes back and forth looking for any sigh of breath. Where was the rest of the clan? Will this cat survive? Only the two siblings could hope as time ticked by. Not just for the white ball of fur but also for the monsoon’s arrival.

You plunge into the cold, roiling water, the force of the current threatening to knock the air from your lungs. Despite the general warmth of the jungle, the amount of rain coming down has chilled the water, and you try not to think about what might be sharing the water with you. Your risk pays off, however; as you surface, you see a cat clinging to a tree, barely managing to keep their head above water. With some encouragement and a helping paw, you and the new cat manage to get back to where you left Ube and Anemone, before climbing back onto dry land.
