E33: During Nighttide the weather gets a little bit more cool and the air becomes dry. This leads to droughts that dry up the creek and grass. The river also becomes shallow as well and the ground cracks as it dries up. The trees also stay mostly green throughout the season or lose their leaves. Despite this there are still plenty of prey animals that stick around as the ground closer to the river stays more fertile and a bit more green. More rarely the weather becomes cold enough that the river and the rest of the creek freeze over. Along with this temperature change comes a light snow that covers the ground only a few inches. It is during this time that more animals hide away or move south of the pride's territory. When this happens the lions hunt only what is truly necessary to survive. The colder weather is short, but enjoyed while it is there.

E34: The first time Kivuli saw snow was when when she found her new territory. She was still a young cub that swam her way to the island. Once there she made herself comfortable and was there for a short while before what she called Nighttide settled in. A few weeks into this dry season white things that looked like a cotton fell from the sky. It baffled Kivuli as she saw it stick to the ground and noticed the water had turned solid. She had tentatively stepped onto the water and found that it was solid enough to stand on and she began sliding. The white stuff that fell stuck to the ice and helped her get her footing. It was around this time that a silver cat with a thick tail and black markings that resembled a leopard wandered by. She laughed at the young lioness and explained what ice and snow were before continuing on her way. Ever since that day Kivuli has loved Nighttide and hopes for snow every year.

The territory always gets colder, but snow doesn't always fall, at least not in large amounts. Up in the hills where the pride actually lives there tends to be a higher chance of at least a little snow each year, and they can get some pretty decent snowfalls.
Down in the grasslands it isn't always quite as cold and snow might not fall as heavily or stick so long.
The woods between the grasslands and hills tend to have an even chance of snow or no snow every year.
The ice usually keeps to the hills though as the stones freeze over.

As for plants in the hills are more likely to actually die and wither away completely away while in the woods some plants might die or wither but some but not all.
Even when the snow isn't too bad it can still get brutally cold, enough that lions will stay in their shelters until the cold has passed.

Extreme cold can be a problem because it means the pride has to travel further from home in order to find prey, the easiest and smallest prey having moved on or gone into hibernation.

"Wait a moment now dear...yes that's it, just a few more steps. Now open."

Princess Nthanda opened her eyes and gasped a little in shock and delight. The clearing at the bottom of the hill outside the nobility's chambers was covered in snow. She knew from her mother's stories that was what it had to be. And now there it was, white and glistening where the sun came through the trees and hit the surface of it.

With a squeal of delight she ran down the path, slipping and sliding on the snow and unaware of her siblings hurrying to follow her.
Once she was at the bottom of the path she launched herself into the snow, landing in it and surprised by just how cold it was.

"It's freezing!" She squeaked, sticking her head up.

"Of course it is dear," her mother said, chuckling softly. "I warned you."

The little princess stayed there a moment then declared, "I like it." And with that she started running around in circles in the snow, encouraging her siblings to chase her.

The Wikimak pride's territory, within the winter, doesn't change very much due to their geographical location. Since they are in within the California region, they don't tend to get much snow. They are, however, prone to horrible thunderstorms and angry tidal waves. Within the winter time, pride members are advised to stay away from the beaches, due to the waves that often crash there. They also tend to stay within their dens more often, not really daring to go out very much due to the cooler, wetter weather.
Nevertheless, life goes on. Most of the smaller plants are browning, of course, due to the cooler weather and the multitudes of rainfall, but they will be green within a couple weeks. Trees remain green and there's not a bit of snow to be seen anywhere around the area. The only place these lions could see snow, would be the mountains of the EverWinter. (152 wc)

"Well, I've seen it, just not up this close." Hateya clarified while Etchemin shook his head.

"I've never seen anything like it before... what is it? Where has it come from? Does it stay long? Why is it white?" Seemed the younger male had plenty of questions about it.

"Well... It's pretty much frozen rain. It comes from clouds, like rain does. It will stay as long as it's cold and... I don't really know why it's white. But enough of this chitchat, we got things to do. You two gotta hunt and I gotta watch you."

the prides territory which is usually hot and dry turns, suddenly, very cold during the winter. while it does take a long time for the weather to shift to the cold point, and when it does it is sudden and lasting. the dry climate turns suddenly to rain and snow in a matter of weeks/days. the nights become colder as well as the days do, and soon enough winter is there. the cold season is very short with all things considered, lasting form late november to early january. the chilly winds, and start of the cold season start anytime from late september to early to mid october. it snows at least once every winter, and if it doesn't it's considered bad luck. and although the pride is much used to the dry and hot climate of their land, they adapt rather well to the cold. some welcoming the chilly air and snow with open arms, some not, especially if it has been a particularly dry and hot season.

apollyon and cordelia watched from the cave as their two daughters bounded down the rocks, apollyon shook his head with laughter while cordelia called hesitantly. "be careful!" the two had children now, but they were not together, together. they had spoken with each other about the matter, it wasn't something that could work. but they agreed to raise the children together, and here they were. lilith and cersei nearly tripped over eachother as they bounded to go inspect this new substance. apollyon was close behind, his golden pelt shimmering. lilith let out a squeak of surprise as she touched the snow, racing back to her father with narrow, judging eyes. "daddy!! it's freezing!" she complained as she weaved herself between his paws. apollyon didn't think he would be a good father, cordelia had said otherwise. his heart warmed as her paws stepped on his. "it's snow, dear. it's supposed to be cold, c'mon." he told his youngest daughter with a soft smile, one that was reserved only for them. for once, he was genuine and kind. his personality around his daughters was the best version of himself. lilith didn't like it at all, she decided. it was cold, wet, and certainly no fun. cersei however, scowled at her sister's reluctance. she stepped into the snow with no reaction as she bounded along in it. "your so dramatic!" she called to her lighter sibling who scoffed. she caught eye of buceros, whom her father was watching with a smirk. he looked toward his daughters, "be quiet, watch this." the king rolled up a bundle of snow swiftly before hurling it at the guard. buceros gasped and turned toward the king alarmed, him and his daughters laughed joyously. buceros smiled at the scene. just like that, lilith decided that she had misjudged snow. now she too bundled up snow, which was much smaller than her father's snowball, but enough to get the job done. mischeviously, she watched her sister before hurling the snowball at her. cersei yelped as she fell back into the snow and everything was drowned out by lilith's fit of laughter. "nevermind, i think snow is great!"

Completed Prompt: The plains of the valley, Ukumbi wa Paradiso, is often chilly and windy during the winter season. This region rarely sees snow if at all and usually won't see rain until the beginning of the year when the wet season starts. Most of the plants have either withered and died or have gone into a hibernation state which will end come to the springtime. There are a few plants that remain despite the bitter winds and biting cold such as the trees that litter the plains. In other regions such as Msitu wa Baridi, there are pines and evergreens that remain unaffected by the season. As for the wildlife, most won't be seen until the beginning of the year or more so during spring when the wet season has replenished the ponds water. A few of the smaller herds of gazelle can be seen about the edges. Wildebeest can also be spotted making early arrival closer to the Maeneo ya Kufa region. With food being scarce everywhere this is often when hyenas try to poach what is left in the valley. Since the pack of wild dogs stays in the area all year there is always some help to ward of unwanted visitors. (203 Words)

"Where are you taking us, Imamu?" The queen's tone was emphatical. The ruling family was currently heading toward the Kilele Cha Juu mountains spanning the northwestern border of the pride's territory. This was their first trip as the three of them and the first trip beyond pride borders for both the king and queen. The young prince bounded delightfully between his mother and father.
"Patience, my queen." The large lion softly butted his head against hers. "It's a surprise for you and our sweet Akida."
"I hate surprises," the lioness said with a mischievous smile. But how could she deny her son the joy of being surprised? The trip was a long one, nearly a day. Imamu had come to her the day before last to ask permission to whisk their little family away for a special treat. Even though they were equals, she still adored how he would implore for her acceptance. Leaving rather late last night, they were still traveling. Akida was very excited, asking questions about well just about everything. The young prince was hardly eight months old. This was his first winter.
The family continued their way through the mountain pass and the terrain was subtly changing from dried dead grass of the plains to rich earth littered with small stones and then to soft powdered snow. Once their paws touched the chilled ground they paused.
"Cold! Cold, cold, cold, cold, cold." Akida hopped from paw to paw hoping to alleviate some of the chill from his feet. Imamu smiled brightly at his family. Asha stared at the ground as if she were confused.
"What...is it?" The queen gingerly touched the snow again with a hesitant paw.
"It's snow!" The king replied with a hearty laugh. "Haven't you ever seen snow before?"
The dark lioness stared quizzically at the glistening snow. At the sounds of Akida squealing, she blinked and turned to him. The cub was rolling in the powder then shaking his pelt causing little flakes to flurry around him before settling back to the ground. The prince was enjoying himself in this foreign substance. She looked to her mate with a wide gaze of uncertainty. He shook his head with a soft chuckle at her wary behavior.
"This is your surprise for us?"
"Yes." Imamu paused to consider Asha a moment. "Do you...like it?"
She hesitated a moment and pressed her paw into the snow again. It was soft. Cold and wet. She glanced over at her son again who had now taken to rolling the snow with his nose. Watching him play brought a smile to her face. Turning back to the pale lion she nodded gently. He returned the smile then batted snow in her direction with a swipe of his paw. The playful attack caught her by surprise but she quickly recovered to chase after him and throw some snow of her own. Eventually, Akida joined in the game, chasing after his parents. The Dreams’ pride lands lie in a dry and warm area. Summers are hot, water becomes hard to find and many plants die from dehydration, leaving only brown stumps and branches. Autumns can be rainy. There is often more water than the dry sand can soak up, so everything becomes muddy, puddles form wherever they find available space. However, no matter how often it rains with the arrival of winter dry season begins anew.

Through it gets chilly, snow is very rare and has not been seen it the last couple of years. There aren’t any large rivers or lakes that could freeze over, but a few puddles leftover from Fall will have their surface frozen. Plant life becomes scarce and greenery becomes rare. There is usually nothing but branches barred of leaves and dry bushes. Winds become stronger making the low temperature feel even colder. If snow does fall more animals flock to the area thanks to water being easily accessible and grass, though frozen, can be found underneath it.

The only ones that came from a cold area where snowfalls were frequent were Moe and Turu, a pair of sibling that now was giggling at the reactions of other pride members and their stumped faces.

They all flocked outside. They stepped into the white fluff inspecting it or sat and looked into the sky and observed snowflakes falling slowly from the dark, night sky lit up by stars that seemed to shine brighter than ever.

“I don’t usually get lost for words”

“I noticed.”

“But this is… incredible.”

Fantom reached out with his paw and caught a single snowflake on it. He observed, as it quickly melted.

It was also the first winter for their youngest member. It was hiding under Sen, using him as a shield from the falling snow. He was too curious to hide for long. Carefully placing one paw after the other he clambered onto a pile of snow, which eventually collapsed under his weight and covered him completely. His head poked out, with a hunk of snow on top of it. His black eyes contrasted with the white of the snow. He laughed, apparently overjoyed by how snow behaved. It was cold, but soft and pretty. He started jumping from one pile to the other, having the time of his life. The other lions turned their heads to observe him. After a while some joined in on the fun, running, throwing snowballs and trying to catch snowflakes with their tongues.

Wintertime in the pride lands involves snow falling upon the grounds. Underbrush of the forest becomes sparse and bare throughout the whole forest. Flowers such as daisies, tulips, and more die out once the cold comes in. The white fir and pine trees that heavily populate the forest stay green. Giving the forest a bit of color in the white abyss it tends to become. With the oak that are sparse within it losing their leaves tell next spring. Star lake freezes over trapping any life beneath it as it does. Only a few animals remain for prey sources for the pride. These are the reindeer, black-capped chickadee, snowy owl, meadow voles, and a few other species of winterized animals. As the squirrels go into hibernation with geese leaving to go somewhere warmer. This tends to cause them to store other food such as squirrels and geese in a 'cold storage' of sorts. Due to the shaman predicting when winter will be coming so a couple of weeks before it is destined to come they hunt more and gather more. Then put them in a hole that will be covered in snow once it has fallen upon the ground. Keeping the prey in it fresher longer. They will also make a smaller whole to store their berries and such so they can keep their diet the same.

During Willabella's first winter in her new pride land she couldn't help but think of the first time she ever saw snow. This, of course, was only a couple years ago before her first pride was destroyed. With her mother and father sound asleep in their den when their daughter ran in. Nudging them awake zooming all around the den saying the sky was falling apart. That the clouds were breaking apart and falling to the ground outside. They both couldn't help but laugh a little bit as she was telling her story. Sharing knowing warm smiles to each other. Soon explaining to her about the winter season along with the fact the soft stuff on the ground was snow. The curious cub of course quickly ran outside again coming right back in not too long after. Screeching that it was cold and wet causing her parents to go into a fit of laughter. The rest of the day was spent cuddling to her parents as they told her wintertime stories. E33: The territory that the Isle of Roses has settled in has never snowed, at least not during the time the pride has lived there. It goes get colder, but nowhere near as cold as some other places. Most likely if the lions followed the rocks up into the mountains, they would find themselves encountering snow, but as it is, most haven't seen it. Ice is also obsolete. There isn't necessarily sleet, though it does rain much harder and more frequently during the cold weather. Prey is not too affected, though some birds will disappear; this doesn't affect the pride very much, as birds aren't all that filling anyways. The Trial Forest is completely unaffected, at least out of the parts people can see of it, adding to most's fear of the place. Besides that, most of the roses do not grow during the cold season, though a few colors prove to be rare exceptions.

E32: Nasaba stared at the white flakes that came tumbling down from the sky, blinking as one touched his nose. "It's cold!" He moaned, causing Cheka to chuckle. Gosh, he loved hearing her laugh; it was far different from any other pridemate's.
"Yes," she said with a smirk, obviously amused by his surprise, "I told you it was."
He pouted at her, causing her to laugh again. "But I didn't believe you."
She walked a bit closer and bumped her nose against his. "And that's where your issue is. Come on, just a bit further up."
Nasaba didn't follow right away, too surprised by the sudden increase in snowflakes falling from the sky. "Cheka, there's so much of it!"
She shook her head. "You're hopeless." And yet, in spite of her comment, she was still smiling when he began to spin around, batting at the snow that was drifting from the sky.
"So all this time, this has been falling up here on the mountains?"
Cheka shrugged. "I don't know, but I know mountains tend to have it. But it can snow in other places to. My old home, we always got snow when it got cold. I suppose you guys just got lucky, probably cause up here is so far away. You think they're holding up alright at the pride?"
Nasaba tilted his head for a moment in thought, and then nodded. "Yes, Mzatamo and Akilia can hold up the fort just fine whole we're gone. This trips was the worth the days it required for coming here and going back."

Bird cry was poking at a puddle that had frozen over and turned to clear stone. It burned her when she touched it and when she pressed down her paw slipped back and forth, it was greatly entertaining. It took up her attention so fully that she did not notice when the first flake fell. Or the second. Or the third.
She didn't notice as she had become enamored with the sight of her own reflection in the puddle and had started to pull faces at herself. She looked up and turned, deciding that she absolutely had to show Seeks finds her discovery, and then she saw.

The territory Astrona has claimed for her own is quite chilly when a rare cold front rolls down from the mountains that make up the gorge's sides. She watched the sky turn blue and purple on the horizon before the wind picked up and she hid from the elements in her den.

Usually, the land in the Valley experiences the occasional temperature drop and maybe a few frosty mornings every year or so. But it is not unheard of for odd weather patterns to emerge out of nowhere in the Valley. Not many lions pray to any weather deities, but such exist. The heat is the norm in the valley 11.5 months out of the year.

During the dry season the largest herds move on to find more reliable water sources, and with it go some of the more nomadic tribes and creatures. Wildfires are at more risk to occur because the landscape is dry. Combined with lightning storms, flash flooding and fires are two extreme possibilities.

Astrona goes cross-eyed trying to look at the white flakes falling from the sky. Her fur is thick enough that she cannot feel the light snow on her, but when one hits her nose or her ears she does! The air is quite cold and she's fluffed up her fur to try to combat the cold. She's heard of snow, yes, but not seen it. Why is there snow here, in the valley? The tigress thought her first experience with snow would be on a mountain.

Unable to contain her curiosity, she snaps one out of the air. Nothing. It takes like nothing. Frowning, tail twitching, Astrona tries again. Still nothing. The next time she gets a large one and feels the brief pinpoint of cold on her tongue before the snowflake melts.

How curious!

The tigress prances around her camp, poking at the snowflakes on the ground and breathing on them to melt them. Or shaking the ones caught in the bushes and grasses. It's not dignified ... but who cares?
