A day spent in self reflection
Freakin Out on the Interstate– Briston Maroney
https://youtu.be/5ePF4MaeK30
A reminder that things have come a long way since she was a child dragged along from show to show. She listened to this a lot while traveling from place to place growing up. She would look out the bus windows and just daydream about a different life to this. It was a comfort song growing up.
Sweater Song-- Weezer
https://youtu.be/LHQqqM5sr7g
A reminder of all the ways she had been undone in life... and is still having all the trauma of life undone.
Better Off Alone– Estrada
https://youtu.be/56ciIiGl8SU
A memory that she's better off now that her family is somewhat distant from her life. She had heard this and while it seems intended towards breakups, she found the lyrics applicable to generational trauma as well. It really helped her cope with a lot of the emotions post-familial fallout during the stage of mourning as she moved towards acceptance.
Things Will Get Better– Vian Izak
https://youtu.be/sAADC5LOmB4
After getting kicked out of the family, this was a song she found a lot of hope and peace in. Even though sometimes the idea of things getting better was hard to actually believe when no end was in sight, she was able to at least rest in the comfort that this song brought. Hearing this was her embracing the fact that her relationship with her biological family was never going to be the same but looking forward to when life would be better.
Somebody to Love (Bardcore)-- Algal the Bard
https://youtu.be/0UkAycaFVlQ
A reminder that now her life is full of loved ones... mainly Ringo. She performs this one alongside Levon oftentimes and is a fan favorite.
The glimpses of sunrise through the window of a car, the morning glow from the lights of a bar. The streetlight’s glow as it came down on sunset-dappled streets, kits playing out in the streets and how she just longed to be one of them.
“Sunny” was a stage name. She hardly used her real one. Kalista. Her parents didn’t really allow it. She was famous and that was that. She grew up on the road, shuttled around from show to show as their family’s primary moneymaker, even as a kit. Hours spent in the bus, listening to them bicker, yell, and argue. She would watch from the windows of her family car and just long to get to play with the other kits instead of practice, practice, practice.
Teenage hit hard. The kit who always obeyed her parents and showed them the respect she thought they deserved slowly saw them for what they were. The sleepless nights on the road had stunted her growth, causing her to grow up much shorter than her peers. She made things work, but saw it as just one other way that this lifestyle had manifested itself into every little facet of her life. The “snap” of waking up to the truth of her parents’ real nature happened for good at one show, when she realized just how much of a toll this had taken on her life. She decided something, to sing a song that they had quickly turned off on the radio, one that was of that kind of topic that was hush-hush in their family. It didn’t seem like much, but it was a song by an artist that her former musician father had been slighted by: the perfect act of final rebellion. The crowd went crazy– while her family glowered from the sidelines. She was only sixteen when they kicked her out, leaving her looking for help and a home. She ended up playing in coffee shops for enough to keep herself alive and stay in a hostel to not end up sleeping out on the streets. She was conflicted, torn between longing for the people who had been so controlling her life or this miserable struggle she was new to. Everything about her missed the chaotic stability of her old life.
Eventually when she was around nineteen, she played in a coffee shop that Levon Foster was visiting and he was greatly impressed by her gorgeous voice and guitar skills. He wanted to offer her a job with him, though he worked very sparsely and more for fun than anything else due to his parents’ excessive wealth and travel the furthest reaches known to Kalons. She accepted and her newfound friend became inseparable. She has been his wingman, partner in crime, and best friend ever since, offering advice, friendship, and those sick bass riffs. They now go wherever they please, two platonic soulmates, bound by happy circumstances and their amazing love for music.
They are kind of rivals with Ringo, since he tends to compete with them for venues, but, being the more sensible one, she reasons with Levon that it’s also because Ringo works harder and actually works all the time, as opposed to their sporadic performance schedule.
A Few of Her Favorite Things:
In recent years, she’s turned more to punk, grunge, and classic rock, but she does like to write her own songs and plays about 50/50 at her shows. Since Levon plays mostly lute, pan pipes, cajon, and vocals, they’ve had to come to a compromise and often play bardcore covers of some of the songs that Kali likes, though she still definitely gets to play her favorites.
She grew up on a somewhat restricted diet so now pigging out on junk food is a favorite of hers. She loves stuffed potatoes, cinnamon flavored anything, orange soda, and frosted sugar cookies. Levon likes very expensive food, but she tends to like the more affordable stuff, particularly fast food.
She loves the colour orange very much, especially when paired with pink and black.
She loves flowers and getting them at shows makes her feel so special and loved.
She can be quite spunky and stubborn and tends to have good quip-backs at a moment’s notice.
She loves mosh pits. She’s no delicate flower and knows how to whip that hair around.
