Perfect Summer Day: "Don't do it Iris. You know you won't be able to bear the guilt. But it's echoing your name" Her sweat rolls down her face from the root of her hairs as the sweltering, blaring heat rolls through her windows. The ray of light making a direct hit on her face with no place to shelter from the scorching heat but the corners of her room. She pulls together her curtains, leaving her in her dark room, but it wasn't cold enough. There IS something that just would do the trick. Iris pulls something out of her cabinet. Her hands, trembling, grasping onto the movie CD of "The Conjuring". She takes a deep breath and watches it without hesitation. And suddenly, everything was cold. No lights, no sun, just Iris and the corrupt witch in the movie with nothing between them but a TV. It goes quiet, her goosebumps slowly rise from her skin from bottom to toe. "It's all in your head Iris" She feels an icy breath glazing over her neck, Iris trembles. "AHHHHHHHHH" Iris jumps from the banshee-like screech blasting from the speakers of the TV. The movie ended hours later. Was she satisfied? Perhaps. But she knew it would be a long, sleepless night as she lays herself in bed hours later. Heart pounding, ba boom, ba boom. (222 words)

Perfect Summer Day:
Graduated. I really truly just graduated. Four years of university, and what do I have to show for it?
A diploma.
A caffeine addiction.
Unwavering persistence.
And of course, the best friends a girl could ever ask for.
The day was gorgeous- Callie couldn't have asked for better weather. The ceremony was indoors, but the pictures afterwards- the part she would remember- was during the golden hour. Not hot enough to make her sweat, but nowhere near cold either. The perfect evening. She ran around campus to her favorite spots, snapping pictures with her friends, goofy faces a common theme, along with peace signs thrown up haphazardly. She could feel her heart swelling with joy and pride in herself, and of course, her friends.
After saying hello, taking a picture, and saying goodbye to many of her classmates, she walked home knowing she probably would not see any of them again, unless by chance. It left a sinking feeling in her chest, but despite that, she wasn't sad. Perhaps it was a bit bittersweet, but at the same time, those were just friends from classes. Her real friends, the ones she had lived with for the past three years, she was never going to let those girls slip out of her life.
The four walked home together, quiet now that the chitter-chatter and excitement had died down. Callie knew they had to be thinking the same thing at this point- their lease was almost up, they'd be leaving soon, on to grad school, or work. "Is this really how it ends?" Callie asked, as all three heads turned to look at her. "I"m not ready!" she protested, throwing her arms in the air.
They all shrugged, feeling a bit more bitter than sweet at the prospect of leaving each other in less than a week. "Nope. No way. Nuh uh. We aren't spending our last days together moping, lets go."
With that, Callie was already turning around, back onto campus, friends in tow.
We aren't wasting this night, c'mon, lets go get ice cream.
With the mention of the frozen treat, they couldn't help but go along, even if a bit tired. As they walked, the chatter grew, just like the smiles on their faces. They ambled throughout campus, cracking jokes, bringing back memories in all of the buildings. The time Callie straight up melted a Styrofoam cup in chem lab accidentally, or the time they all decided to hike up all 40 flights of campus's tallest building- just to say they did it came up, along with a slew of memories that could only be heard by whisper, or nights forgotten.
Walking around with the people she loved the most, remembering the things she loved the most?
It couldn't get any better than this.

Perfect Summer Day:
the sun beaming and the
breeze swirling through the
air. for his perfect summer
day it needs to be approximately
90 degrees with a slow breeze
and a pool right beside him.
Hawaiian pineapple pizza still
in the box as he lays on the
pool raft with his tropical drink.
playing volleyball in the pool with
all of his friends. if he’s inside
then the tv is on and the ac is blasting.
a mini fridge stuffed with ice
cream is laying on the other side
of the room. anything below 78 he
considers not a summer day. he considers
it practically winter. jack loves the
heat. what if he’s not home? well
he hits the mall and buys as many stuffed
animals as he can fit in his car. he will
then stop at Starbucks and get a cold
refreshing iced coffee. at the night in
his perfect day he’s probably still in the
pool. his pool has flashing light and him
and his friends are all partying all day.
now that is a perfect summer day.

perfect summer day:
lightning ripped from one pulsing, suffocating cloud to another in an endless sea of swirling gray and green. thunder growled, an ever-present roaring undertone. the sky itself shook, grass frantically waving as if begging akoya to get to shelter. the radar beeped with a pulsing warning, screaming purple and white tones amongst the maze of air streams flying across a battered screen. the van rattled, its nearly rusted body groaning in anticipation of the tidal wave of water droplets advancing a mile away. akoya's eyes flitted across the drenched plains, and her face broke out into a grin, illuminated by the flicker of electricity.
it really was a perfect summer day.
storm-chasing, for akoya, was the most thrilling thing life could offer. it wasn't the danger, really, or the money (the money part was laughable). rather, it was the moments before she set up her camera, the blissful few minutes before she had to kick the van into 5th gear to get on the outskirts of the hissing winds. in a way, it was the calm before the storm she admired. to her, the feeling was a delicately arranged and violently sung symphony, played only for her to admire.
despite having no one besides her in the van, she wasn't the only living thing there. light pooled in akoya's eyes, as if the storm itself were acknowledging her presence. with a jolting crash, the wave of precipitation collided with the side of the van, and gusts of wind thrashed dust against her windshield.
and this time, the storm played a different symphony. she liked to think it was for her.
(she said later that it was probably the coolest day of her life, but not after being reasonably scolded for driving almost directly into a tornado.)
