Oh the crimes he’d committed, how he’d laughed in the face of danger long ago. The date to pay for his fallacies had come and gone, the man skipping the date and disappearing into the nothingness that surrounded him.

If he could go back, would he change it?

No.

So much had been lost at the opposite ends of his hands. A world destroyed. A lifetime of work gone, in mere seconds. It had all come crashing down in the end, a chaotic mess that shook the very fabric of time and space.

All the credit was his for the taking.

His task was not without help; Rome wasn’t built in a day, and such destruction wasn’t capable with just one man. No, he’d taken on a team of talented souls to aide in his task. He’d thanked them dearly before leaving them to fend for themselves. None of them made it, as far as he knew. A shame, truly. Nothing could be done now.

Perhaps if he could go back, he could warn them. Give them all a window to leave. It would hinder his master plan, however, and it might’ve left him scrambling more at the end of it all then he’d already been at the date. It wouldn’t change anything. It wouldn’t matter.

Deep down, he knew. He knew that taking pride in destroying an entire reality wasn’t sane. It wasn’t right. Yet his chest pinged with an intense heat at the mere thought, the knowledge that it was him who had all the power. Him who could destroy anything, should it convenience him.

To have such power and not abuse it was a task in that of itself.

Not to mention that due to his marvel, he’d been outcasted by society. He was a wanted man, in more places than one.

He had nowhere to go, now. He was stuck in his self-built limbo, forced to hide from the worlds that wanted vengeance for their loss. He could never go home. He could never go anywhere without making preparations and hiding his identity. He could never be himself again in the eyes of the public. Not safely, at the least.

But would he go back and change it all?

Never.

It’s what he keeps telling himself. He was righteous in his cause. He showed them all.

So why does it feel so terrible?

Why do the edge of his thoughts taunt him? Tell him that he’s a monster?

They’re wrong.

He’s not a monster. He’s a man who had to act.

He had no other choice. It had all been set in motion and carried out.

Even if he could go back…

How would he change it? How could he change it and make anything better than before?

He couldn’t. He knew he couldn’t.

He’ll just have to keep running.
