Postby Winchester's Wolf » Sat Oct 06, 2018 8:49 am

Hope i'm not late pfft

username:
Winchester's Wolf

name:
Nesbett

gender:
Male

what's their secret?:

Rain was pouring down from the darkened sky, cloaked in shadow that fancied playing tricks on Nesbitt's overactive imagination. Wind whistled like a distraught wolf’s cry as a shiver ran down his spine. “Why am I doing this?” Nesbitt muttered under his breath, pulling his jacket closer to his soft neck. He could see his breath in the chilly air, illuminated by the moon and his own source of light. Continuing to trudge into the darkness with his lamp, he made it to the old barn door. He glanced back at his welcoming home in the distance, thinking about how nice that warm, blazing fire would be right now. The Flit jumped, hearing a faint clang coming from inside the barn.
So he hadn’t imagined it.
Taking a deep breath in, he reached for the rusty door handle and turned it slowly. A blast of cold air abruptly hit his fur, causing his eyes to water. “H—Hello?” Nes gulped. No answer. He took a step inside, looking around at the dark structure lightened by nothing but his dim lantern. “This was a stupid idea,” he muttered under his breath, “it was probably just a raccoon,” Nes sighed, scolding himself and closing the barn door to escape the horrendous wind. “If anyone’s there, mind as well come out!” Nes hollered into the empty and foreboding space. Even his own squeaky, hardly intimidating voice freaked him out at this point. Dry hay crunched underfoot somewhere in front of him, his heart sank with a feeling of heavy dread in response. “Come out!” Nesbitt exclaimed into the shadows, holding up his lamp shakily and walking forward. A restrained cough reached his ears, cracked and wheezy. His light reached a figure laying in the hay, and the Flit covered their eyes as the lantern reached their face.
“Please—” The Flit said, coughing once more. “Just let me leave, you’ll never see me again,” the male pleaded, removing his paws from his face and staring back at Nesbett; appearing more fearful than him.
“Who are you?” he questioned, keeping his stance tall. The Flit looked away, squeezing one of his paws against his side and clenching his teeth. They must have been the age of his mother if she was still living, around forty.
“It’s not important, kid,” The Flit responded, his long ears drooping to his shoulders.
“It is to me,” Nes countered, daring to take a step closer to this unknown Flit. Silence followed, nothing to be heard but the rattling of the metal roof and window panes.
“Cassidy, Lex Cassidy,” The Flit finally replied, staring up at Nesbett once more. That’s when he realized how tired Lex looked. His black shadow eyes stayed only half open, and there were noticeable bags under them.
“I’m Nesbett, but my friends call me Nes,” He said with a little smile, easing up just a little since it appeared Lex had no intentions of hurting him.
“Nesbett, eh?” Lex questioned, a hint of a smile dawning his weary features. “Tell ya what, Nes, you can go back to your house, go do whatever you were doing before I rudely interrupted it, and I can skedaddle. Deal?” He added with a cough, his breath beginning to tremble as he winced. Nesbett’s gaze fell to Lex’s side, now able to spot the color red on the paw that clung to it.
“No,” Nesbett murmured, shaking his head.
“What?”
“I—I can’t let you go,”
“And why not?” Lex asked, his eyes slitting.
“Because . . . because—” Nesbett stammered, feeling the eyes of Lex burning into the corner of his vision.
“I’m not a killer,” Lex began, his tone solemn. Nesbett forced himself to look back in the direction of Lex, and somehow, just knew he was telling the truth. “That’s what you think, isn’t it?” He questioned, bitter but also dejected; as if he understood the reasons why Nes would think that, but at the same time hated that he did know why.
“I don’t think that!” Nesbett quickly responded, choosing to place the lantern between him and Lex and sat down on the creaky wooden floorboards. “But, I would like to know why a strange Flit has broken into my barn and is bleeding.”
“I’m sure you would,” Lex replied with another cough, taking a long breath inwards to probably help with the pain.
“Or I could just call the police instea—”
“No!” Lex snapped immediately, his eyes widening, full of alarm. “Please, just let me go,”
“Then tell me what happened,” Nes pushed, his eyes unwavering. Lex laid his head against the wall in defeat.
“Just know . . . it was all an accident, and now I’m on the run. There, happy?” Lex asked through closed teeth, glancing down at his wound.
“I know what it’s like to be on the run,” Nesbett muttered matter-a-factly, only realizing he said that allowed when he returned Lex’s curious gaze. “I mean—ugh, not actually being on the run, but wanting to run away,” he hastily added, clearing his throat. Lex’s featured changed, growing puzzled.
“How old are you?”
“Nineteen. Why?”
“Nothing, you just . . . look older,” Lex shrugged, propping himself up a little and grimaced. “I guess wanting to run away might have something to do with that.”
“Yeah, well my dad wasn’t exactly a model citizen before he left me and my mother,” Nes scoffed a little, glancing out the nearest barn window into the darkness.
“Neither was mine,” Lex responded, brows furrowing in thought. “I have to go,” he continued, coming to an unstable stand. Nes sprang to his feet.
“You can’t, you’ll freeze to death! Nevermind your wound,” Nesbett argued back.
“I’ll manage,”
“That’s a lie,”
“I have no other choice, alright!” Lex growled, putting a paw on Nesbett’s shoulder to steady himself. “They’ll catch me, and then I’ll get locked up like a dog,” his paw shook. “I can’t let that happen—” Lex’s paw slid back to his slide, his voice cut short. His body began to fall backwards as he lost consciousness, Nesbett barely managed to catch him before hitting the floor.
“Lex? Lex!” Nesbett questioned frantically, making out something black that shimmered in the light in Lex’s jacket. Nesbett sucked in a breath, realizing it was a gun. He glanced back towards the barn door. He should call someone. But, then they would put him away, just like he said . . . for something he supposedly didn’t mean to do. Nesbett took a deep breath in, gathering his thoughts. He stared down at Lex’s features, he wasn’t a criminal. He just knew.
* * *
Nesbett’s ears twitched, hearing Lex stur behind him as he focused on the task at hand: breakfast. Mouthwatering fumes made it to his nose, the bacon strips sizzling away with each careful flip of the spatchula.
“Wha . . . where am I?” Came the groggy voice of Lex mid yawn.
“Heaven, of course,” Nesbett answered with a playful grin, breathing in the intoxicating aroma of the crispy meat. Turning to look at Lex, he realized the Flit didn’t get the joke; his face as pale as a ghost. “Just kidding!” he quickly replied with a small laugh, and Lex relaxed.
“What’s that?” Lex asked, licking his lips in Nes’s direction. Nesbett decided not to respond, instead, split the hot food onto two of her mother’s favorite china and served it up to him.
“See for yourself,” Nes urged with a smirk, taking a bite out of the juicy deliciousness. Lex didn’t hesitate, gobbling down the bacon and eggs in a mere thirty seconds or less. “Wow,” Nes remarked, staring down at Lex’s empty plate. “You haven’t eaten in a while, have you?” The question of where Lex came from rose to the top of his mind.
“Nope,” Lex replied simply, avoiding eye contact. “Hey, what’s that special somethin’ in these eggs?”
“Just rosemary,” Nes cleared his throat, pausing, “my, ugh, dad always put it on them. I guess it stuck,”
“Guess so,”
“He always liked breakfast at midnight after getting home from the bar,” Nes continued in a monotone voice, crossing his arms. Lex tapped his fork against his plate half mindedly.
“My pop was a deadbeat too, what can I say,” He remarked with a shrug, glancing up towards Nes with an understanding expression.
“I uhm, usually can’t tell anyone that,” Nes added slowly, scratching the back of his neck. “Oh, dang it!” he mumbled under his breath, rising to a stand.
“What’s wrong?”
“I completely forgot about my college classes,” Nes sighed deeply, standing idle for a moment to think. “You better not go anywhere when I’m gone,” he added, staring Lex straight in the eyes.
“I promise,” Lex replied genuinely, returning his gaze with a nod.
* * *
“My calculus was killer today,” Nesbett’s friend, Gabe, remarked, leaning back in his chair as he took a bite of his sandwich. Nesbett didn’t respond, choosing to play with his food instead. “Hey—Nes, are you okay?” Gabe asked, looking at Nes with concern. Nes quickly looked up, not realizing how lost in his thoughts he had truly become until now.
“Huh? Oh! Y—Yeah, I’m fine,” Nes stuttered a little, returning his gaze to his lunch. Gabe didn’t seem convinced, though.
“You’ve been acting weird all day, are you sure . . .”
“I’m fine,” Nes snapped, his voice rising.
“Okay, okay,” Gabe said, holding his paws out.
“Sorry man, it’s just that . . .” Nes paused, feeling a pit of regret in his stomach having said anything. “I have to get to my next class,” he mumbled, briskly shoving his backpack strap further up his shoulder and keeping his eyes glued to the ground as he walked off.
* * *
Unlocking the front door, Nesbett made his way into the house and down the hall. “Lex?” He called out cheerfully, throwing his keys on the table nearby. He raised an eyebrow, hearing no response. His paced quicken as he wandered to the kitchen that was connected to the living room, no sign of him. “Lex!” He repeated, more urgent this time.
At that moment he turned a corner, jumping when he almost collided with who else but Lex.
“Easy there, bud,” Lex laughed, rubbing his wet fur with a towel. Nesbett breathed out a sigh of relief, placing one of his paws on his forehead.
“You scared me, I thought you might’ve left,” He confessed, slightly out of breath. Lex half smirked.
“Nah,” He said simply, leaning his weight against the nearest wall as he pressed one paw on his side. Nesbett couldn’t help but stare at the dark spot of red on his shirt. “Honestly, I don’t think I could even if I wanted to.” He joked, visibly grimacing.
“I see you at least took a shower—yet you’re still wearing those dirty clothes! You go in the living room, I can find something for you,” Nes insisted with a soft smile, beginning to stroll in the direction of his room.
A minute or two later, he reappeared in the living room holding a clean, red shirt and jeans. “See,” Nes began with a chuckle, “at least this shirt will help mask it.”
Lex didn’t laugh, though, in fact, he looked deep in thought. “Why are you helping me, when you don’t even know what I’ve done?” He asked suddenly, taking Nes by surprise. He wasn’t exactly sure why.
“I—I don’t know,” He replied slowly with a shrug, shifting from foot to foot. “Just try these on, okay? It’s the least you can do for me,” Nes added with a faint smile. Lex nodded, taking the clothes.
Within a few minutes, Lex was back and threw his old, worn clothes on the coffee table next to the couch where Nes was waiting for him.
“How do I look?” He questioned, holding his arms out.
“Good,”
“That’s just a polite way of saying I look horrific,” Lex countered, laughing.
“No! I mean, it does look a bit small on you, but it’s fine,” Nes responded, soon breaking out into a laughing fit as well.
“What was that?” Lex abruptly asked, perking his ears. Nes turned, hearing the doorbell ringing repeatedly.
“Quick! Get in the closet,” Nes hissed. Lex froze, staring back at Nes with widened eyes. “Go!” Nes added, motioning him towards the closet with his flailing paws. He complied nervously, closing the door behind him. Nesbett gulped, heading for the door. He peeped through the hole, puzzled to see Gabe on the other side. Taking a steadying breath in, he reached for the silver door handle and opened the door hesitantly. “Hey man—what’s up?”
“Can I come in?”
“Uh, yeah—sure,” Nes responded in the most “normal” tone he could possibly muster. Gabe stepped in with a warm smile, putting his paws in his pockets. “Sorry about earlier, I was just preoccupied.”
“Hey, I get it, we’re cool,” Gabe said, glancing around the hall.
“So . . . what brings you here?”
“You just seemed like you needed someone right now, it’s hard to explain,” Gabe confessed with a shrug, walking down the hall towards the living room.
“Well, I assure you I’m fine!” Nes quickly replied, swallowing hard.
“I just wanted to make sure, ya know—I’ve had stuff like this happen to my other friends before,” Gabe added, sitting down on the couch. “So you’re sure you’re alright?”
“Yes!” Nes grumbled through clenched teeth, balling his paws into fists momentarily.
“Whatever you say, I guess,” Gabe responded, his gaze lingering on Nesbett’s anxious figure.
At that moment, a floorboard creaked behind them. Nes held his breath, praying his friend didn’t hear that.
“What was that?” Gabe inquired curiously, and Nes’s heart sank in response.
“I have rats,” He coughed, avoiding eye contact. “Um, shouldn’t you be going? I have homework to do,”
“Yeah,” Gabe began half mindedly, coming to a stand. He looked down at the coffee table, suddenly perplexed. “Is that yours?” He inquired, pointing at Lex’s shirt with a noticeable blood stain.
“Oh!” Nes began, springing to his feet. “This is for a project! Nothing special,” He laughed, unable to mask his tenseness, and picked up the shirt nonchalantly to make sure Gabe couldn’t.
“I see,” Gabe said, the same way as before. He was walking in the direction of the closet instead of the hall.
“Gabe!” Nesbett found himself yell, forcing him to turn around to look at him. Once he had gotten his attention, he realized he hadn’t gotten far enough in his head as to what he planned on doing. “I think you should go now,”
“Huh? I was just—”
“Now, Gabe,” He doubled down, his voice ripping through the air. Gabe paused, opening his mouth to say something before closing it again. Without another word, he quietly went down the hall and to the door, nothing to be heard in that moment but his dull footsteps until a door clicked shut. Until that point, Nesbett hadn’t realized he had been holding his breath, now releasing it in a long exhale tainted with a new intense feeling of guilt. The closest door creaked open.
“I’m sorry you have to do that.”
“It was nothing,”
“But it was,” Lex pressed, ears pinned back and his face clouded in thought. “I’m sorry.”
“There’s nothing to be sorry about, Lex,” Nesbett said slowly with a small sigh, plopping onto the couch. All of the energy in his legs had been completely drained from that painful experience.
“I’m not worth hurting someone over,” Lex muttered under his breath, his eyes brooding.
“But you said whatever you did to make the police hunt you down was an accident!” Nesbett countered desperately.
“I still did something wrong.”
“Oh, and what was that again? Right—you never said. For all I know you are a murderer,” He snapped angrily, silence abruptly sweeping over the room. Nes stared at the pale brown wall in front of him, refusing to focus on anything else.
“I deserve that,” Lex began, pausing hesitantly. “I should turn myself in, right now.”
“But—you can’t do that!” Nesbett rapidly stumbled over his words as he tried to get them out, twisting his head to look up at Lex.
“What else can I do?”
“Just—stay with me for awhile, until whatever it is blows over.”
“Until I drive all your friends away?”
“I’ll make it alright with Gabe tomorrow, don’t you worry.”
* * *
“Hey Gabe!” Nesbett began, walking faster towards his friend. They didn’t turn. “Gabe!” He called again, and finally he glanced back at him.
“What do you want?”
“I’m . . . I’m sorry about yesterday. I just wasn’t myself,” Nesbett confessed, trying to catch his friends eyes. “And I’m sorry, really,” He added, giving him the playful puppy eyes. Gabe chuckled.
“Alright, alright. I forgive you,” Gabe smiled slightly.
“Sweet!” He said with a laugh, his eyes gravitating towards the tv screen above him. A reporter spoke: “And on to our next story, an armed gas station robber is still on the loose this morning, authorities . . .”
His blood turned cold, staring at the gas station cam of the robber. It was Lex.
“He is said to still be armed and dangerous, so be on the lookout . . .”
“Nes?” Gabe questioned, snapping his finger in front of him and looked up at what Nes was so fixated on. “Something about that guy looks familiar. Ever seen him?”
“No.”
“Oh. It’s probably nothing,” Gabe shrugged, looking at Nes with a raised eyebrow.
“I have to get home,” Nes said simply, sprinting down the long hall.
“Hey—wait!” Gabe called behind him, but it was too late.
* * *
Nesbett burst through the door and sprinted down the hall, no time to catch his breath as he met Lex sitting in the living room.
“What’s the matter?” He asked within moments, obviously confused.
“You robbed a gas station?”
Lex’s face went pale as a sheet of paper. “Yes, but—”
“How could you do that? You could’ve killed someone!” He felt dirty. He felt disgusted and betrayed all at once, and it hurt.
“I told you, I had no choice, alright?!” Lex snapped, cupping his paws on his face. “It all happened so fast, someone gave me a gun and I just wanted enough money for some good food,” He continued slowly, choosing his next words carefully. “I know it was a horrible thing to do, but I can’t rewrite the past.”
“Did the cops shoot you when you were fleeing?”
“Yeah,”
“I wish I could’ve helped you before, you felt like you had to do that,” Nesbett furrowed his brows, placing one paw on his hip.
“What’s done is done, I realize that now.” Lex said, his voice doubtless and steady. “It’s time to turn myself in before I hurt more than just myself—”
Sirens blare suddenly near the front side of the house, and a voice yelled at them to come out peacefully.
“Gabe must’ve remembered the shirt!” Nes screeched, his hands flying up to his mouth and beginning to pace the room in a panic.
“It’s for the best,” Lex said, straightening his figure and holding his head high with pride.
“No! Please,” Nes pleaded in vein, eyes beginning to water. He said nothing.
“I’ll tell them I forced you to help me, just to get you off the hook.”
Nesbett turned away, unable to look at him as he opened the door and stepped outside to be met with a storm of police officers. He dared look, just in time to see Lex pushed roughly to the ground and handcuffed. His vision blurred, all he could see were red and blue lights amidst the sky darkened with gray, angry clouds. Gabe sprinted up to him after Lex was being taken away and wrapped him in a warm hug.
“Are you ok?!” He quickly asked, releasing him from the hug but keeping his paws on Nesbett’s shoulders as he stared into his eyes searchingly.
“I’ll . . .” Nesbett began, his voice cracking. “I’ll be fine,” He inhaled deeply, clearing his mind. “Just . . . fine.”

Alrighty, I've finally judged this one! Sorry for the wait you guys.
First off, thank you to everyone who entered, I loved reading all your forms and seeing what secrets you came up with, but I have to award this flit to Winchester's Wolf! I thought the story was very in depth and showed Nesbett's character very well through his secret. I can't to see him develop more <3

I would also love to say I'm offering runner ups to 9TailedFox and SpartanAmeythst!
9TailedFox, your form was exactly what I was thinking off when I made this flit so I was really happy to see someone else thought of it too! And SpartanAmeythst, I thought Kodi's secret was very understandable and almost relatable, so I wanted to offer a runner up to you as well! They might take a little bit since I am pretty busy, but I hope you guys wouldn't mind.

Again, thank you to everyone for entering and good luck to you guys in future competitions!
