What do they do at night?
They say the night is when the city truly comes alive. I'm not inclined to disagree.

I sit, perched on my stool, watching men, women, and barely legal children stumble through, asking me for a drink, advice, both or neither. Some of them just sit as I clean down the table, the pounding pulse of the music surrounding us making things easier to say or easier to ignore. Glass half-empty, glass half-fulls. After I wait for my friend to get off work. We both work at the same club, her job is just...more out there. Thankfully she's protected by the bouncers and security in this place.

We walk home together, moving past well-to-do neighborhoods, talking about our day. She tells me of new people coming into work so she won't have to as long. I think it's concerning, but she shrugs and says no it's a break. I tell her how being a bartender typically means I'm the club therapist and she laughs but doesn't disagree.

"It makes sense. People like spillin their guts out to ya."

She says it so easily. Like it's easy talking to the kid who's scared to go home or the man too shamefaced to talk to his wife. The girl who's got more on her plate than she should.

I walk her to her apartment, it's dangerous being alone this late and she's my friend, and I wonder what life was before I ended up here.

What got me stuck here?

As my friend goes home and I wait to make sure she's in alright, I take a walk three blocks away to my house.

I think about this most nights. Being the person I was. Who I wanted to be. I say that I'm good here. It was hard work to get here.

But it's not where I wanted to be. Not where I wanted to go.

That's the thing about people around here though. No one asked to be in this neighborhood. I sure as hell didn't.

No this place is where real dreams died and life kicked down the front door. 'Cassy' Cassandra wanted to be a doctor. Got pregnant and had to drop out of college. 'Hercules' McCullough wanted to go into the NFL. Choked on first practice with a scout. Little Josiah wanted to play for Chicago Bulls. Got benched from injury.

I could make a book to go on. And my dream may not have died yet. People keep saying "You still got time", like once I turn a certain age my dream will die too. It's depressing, but it's the truth.

My dream wasn't even a big one.

I just wanted to live somewhere decent and be able to. Is that too much to ask?

According to city hall it was.

So maybe that's why when I tag or bomb railcars I don't care anymore. Yeah it's 3 am, but I got five spray paint bottles with my name one em.

And soon that railcar gonna have my tag on it and with every angry authority figure I see, well I'd laugh.

It's vandalism, they'll say and when I look at my home, the torn up apartments and littered up streets and vacant lots, boarded up churches with no congregation, I'll say this is Vandalism. The way they got us livin is a cryin shame and they don't even care because when they get off work they get to live on the nice side of town where none of us are.
