What injury put a stop to his racing days? After breaking out of the gate, Barbaro landed wrong on his right hind leg, which put more of his body weight on the leg than it could hold. This resulted in a broken cannon bone above the pastern, a broken sesamoid bone behind the fetlock, and a broken long pastern bone below the fetlock. In addition to the fractures, he also dislocated his fetlock joint.
Link: ~Handsome StallionFact: The lineage of all racing Thoroughbreds today can be traced back to 3 individual sires, the Godolphin Arabian, the Darley Arabian, and the Byerley Turk. Although a majority of today's thoroughbreds are closer related to the Godolphin Arabian than the other sires, approximately 95% of all male thoroughbreds can trace their heritage back to the Darley Arabian.
Seeing this equid made makes me very happy (and also a little sad at the same time to remember). I was an avid follower of Barbaro after I watched his Kentucky Derby victory live, and I still have my pile of Barbaro story newpaper cuttings and the Barbaro Breyer horse model on my desk at home.
