    short story under 800 words:

Today was one of those days. You know, when there is literally nothing going on, nothing to do; the lack of things to do was driving Ziggy up a tree, literally.

Ziggy dug his claws into the soft, moist bark of a tree, hoisting his small body up a bit in hopes of propelling up the side of the trunk. He has been at this for about ten minutes, feeling as if he had accomplished a lot in scaling the tree. He looked back behind himself, and frowned at the ground that was only two feet below him. Ziggy groaned angrily and unhinged his claws from the tree, falling flat on his rump while glaring angrily at the tree.

About five minutes into the long, heart-retching stare-down between himself and this very pathetic-looking tree, Ziggy got up onto all of his paws and trotted off in hopes of finding something. He wasn't too certain what he was looking for, and he really didn't care, he just wanted something to do!

Then did something that would potentially perk his interest crawl out from the very thick brush and waddle out before his very eyes. A wide grin spread across the small dragon's face as the unsuspecting mouse looked upon his unexpected guest, looking over before it grew bored and trotted off into the clearer area. Ziggy's jaw dropped to the ground in bewilderment. He expected the mouse to fear him, no; he wanted the mouse to fear him! He was a mighty dragon with the strength of five hundred wild horses and he knew for a fact that he was way more ferocious than that pathetic excuse of a creature!

Ziggy bounded off after the mouse, keeping an eye on the slim tail the entire chase, up until he saw the mouse make a sharp turn before his very eyes, and a cactus burrowing its numerous spines into his shoulder and chest. Ziggy watched angrily as the mouse dashed off into the distance of the plains before gathering up the strength to pull his body out of the mighty jaws of the cactus. He managed to pull away with only a few needles stuck in the side of his muzzle, which he simply shook off. Ziggy puffed out his chest, doing his best to retain any remaining pride he had left before heading back to that dreadful, boring tree, and as he took his first step, a sharp pain shot through his paw and up his foreleg. The fur along his spine stood on edge as he stood frozen in his tracks, but then his entire body relaxed as he looked down at the cactus spine digging into the front of his paw with a frown.

'Things would be a lot better if I were to follow them,' Ziggy thought to himself as he used his other paw to hold down the one end of the needle and pulling his paw away swiftly, making sure to step over the needle this time instead of blindly walking onto it again. He headed back to the tree with his head low, his tail dragging along behind him. He felt an ache in his chest as he thought of the green jays, an avian creature he closely related himself to, flying off to the north, leaving him stranded in the thick tropical forest the birds use to call "home".

Finch
I know, you may be wondering, "Why did she choose the name Finch if the JBD was made after a Green Jay?" Well, I knew that a lot of people would choose something after Jays, and so I wanted his to be unique. I actually got the name from Atticus Finch, a kind and fair character in To Kill a Mockingbird- another bird reference. I have loved that name since I first heard it, and wanted a JBD with it. As soon as I saw this boy, the dragon with all of my favorite colors combined, I knew that he was my little Finch.

Image
His face was burning. A small dragon was crouched on the edge of a large crater, peering into the inky darkness at sizzling lava at the bottom of the crevice. It bubbled and broiled, seemingly calm. Then, he felt it. A huge tremble. Finch knew that he needed to move. As soon as he had jumped backwards and run in the opposite direction, the earth rumbled again and a startling explosion followed. The red-hot liquid rock was spurting out and racing down the sides, cooling on the edges and forming ruts. It quickly catches up to Finch, despite running so fast that he thought he just might lift off and fly. Soon, he had to leap across the boiling, churning, fiery paths, trying to escape. He couldn't outrun it; the lava just kept gaining speed. That was when he heard a door close and pawsteps approaching, forcing him to come back to reality.

Topaz came into the living room to spot his nephew precariously perched on the very edge of their worn-out couch, about to topple to the ground. The teenage JBD's expression appeared puzzled but amused. "Finch... what exactly are you doing?" Finch looked up at his cousin and babysitter and grinned. "Look out, Topaz! The floor is lava! You're gonna burn up!" At this, Topaz returned the smile and lithely hopped up onto an armchair. The younger dragon sat. "I don't feel like playing that game anymore. Will you play another one with me?" The elder of the two nodded. "What do you want to play, then?" he questioned. Finch's mind raced with ideas, his imagination pushed to its limit. "Oooh, I know!" His green-and-black tail quivered in anticipation. "We can be PIRATES! ARGH!" Finch nodded again. "We should go outside and play!"

And that they did. Finch ran about, brandishing a branch as a sword, as Topaz stood atop his bench-boat. They said many argh, mateys! and buried little trinkets, only to dig them up again. Soon, however, the sun began to set. Bugs began to hum, and the birds began to retreat to their own nests. Topaz knew that it was time for young beans to get ready for bed. He hopped out of his perch in a tree, and trotted over to Finch. "It's time to go inside now," he announced. Finch frowned. He hated going to sleep; it was so boring! "I want to keep playing!" he shouted. Topaz sighed and looked down on him kindly, and then ruffled his head-fur. "You can play outside tomorrow," he consoled, "Everything will still be there then. But if you want to grow up healthy and strong, you need to sleep." Finch groaned and slunk off towards the house with Topaz right behind. The elder dragon herded the young one into bed. He pulled the covers up to his nephew's chin and then headed toward the door. "Your parents will be back when you wake up. Sweet dreams, little bean." Finch closed his eyes as his cousin turned off the lights and left the door open a crack after exiting.

That day, Finch had learned that imagining with friends is much more fun than imagining by yourself.

I think that a beautiful design could come from this frog or this duck:
Frog
Duck
The colors are beautiful and would make a gorgeous JBD. I would love to see more interesting animal-related designs.

I checked, the story is under 800 words and all others are under 200. <3

name:
Dacelo, which is the scientific name of the Kookaburra
He also goes by Cello and Dee

short story under 800 words:
The winter snow fell slowly to the frozen ground as Dacelo and Ari made their way slowly back to the camp. Ari was flying close to the ground as the snowflakes started to cover his sooty gray fur. Out of nowhere Dacelo tripped and landed face first in the snow. "Ughh I'm so clumsy I can't even walk without messing up!" he got back up and shook the snow from his fluffy green and blue fur. "Relax Dacelo just chill out for a second, you just tripped at least it's nothing too bad. Right?" Ari was smiling as he helped his friend back up. "C'mon I have to show you something back at camp and i think you'll like it." he looked over his shoulder with an excited gleam in his eyes. Cello smiled to himself, suddenly the wind picked up and blew the two friends of their feet. "Dee we better hurry or this will turn ugly for us." Dacelo nodded as Ari spread his wings and took off again, struggling to battle against the wind. "Just a little while longer, we just have to go over that hill and we're home.” With his keen icy blue eyes focused on Ari, Dacelo ran ahead back to camp. As the snow thickened thy picked up their pace and Cello felt like he was flying over the snowy landscape. They could see the cave with its warm glow from the fire and it's comforting feeling of security.
Being faster Ari arrived first and folded his wings close to his body and gracefully spiraled down to the front entry way. He looked back to make sure Dacelo was there and ducked inside the cave. Cello stepped inside and collapsed on the ground, his fur was dusted with a thin coat of frost and his paws were numb from the freezing temperatures. "We are never going to go that far away from camp ever again, please I feel like a giant fluffy Popsicle." Ari laughed as he shook the snow off his fur and feathers. "Ok well hold on a second I'll be right back." he turned around and padded into one of the smaller caves leading off of the main one. Dacelo yawned and lazily looked around, to him it seemed like just days since he had lost his parents to a blizzard and found Ari. He stared into the fire as it leapt and twirled in a frenzied dance and though of the warm summers and soothing rain that used to come.
"You ok?" Dee jumped up with surprise as Ari jolted him from his daydreams. Dacelo saw the small basket Ari wad carrying "Yeah I'm fine but what did you want to show me?" he placed the basket down on the ground and sat down and gestured towards it with his paw. Cautiously he crept towards it and looked inside and immediately his eyes widened and his heart fluttered in his chest. A tiny bird was huddled at the bottom in a nest of mosses "Ari what? How? What?" Cello had a love of birds that even was greater than his love of the sky. "It's parent left it and I just wanted it to have a chance." Ari grinned and wagged his tail with joy because of how happy he ha made his friend. Thoughts of pure excitement swirled in his mind as he thought about the little bird. By the color of it’s plumage he knew immediately that the small bird was one of his favorites and his namesake. “A Kookaburra…” Dee whispered and crouched down so he looked the chick in the eye. Ari stood up and slowly walked out of the cave and into the snow pleased that he had done something good for once. Cello curled around the basket and lay his tail around the bird. “Don’t worry I’ll take care of you, you’re safe now nothing bad will happen here you’re with me and I won’t let you down.” He remembered those exact words that Ari had said to him and with just those words he had felt safe.

name:
Totoro
I thought it was a quiet, lovely name. It has no relationship to Tess's bird named Totoro, just that I have always liked the name Totoro and I thought it fit this handsome boy perfectly.

short story under 800 words:
I placed my black paw delicately into the cool, spring water, not wanting to stir the tadpoles only two feet away from me. I adjusted the grip on the net that was held tightly in my mouth, lowering myself slowly so I was almost even with the water. I skimmed my net through the water, swiftly picking up the tadpole, but at the same time I stirring up the brown silt at the bottom of the creek. I lifted my net out of the water just enough to leave the tadpole alive.
“They’re quite interesting,” Lilly murmured, looking at the tadpole over my shoulder. I nodded in agreement, and glanced slightly over my shoulder, just barely catching a glimpse of the lovely smile I had always loved. She walked over to the bank next to me and sat down. I dropped the net into the water, sending water flying all over Lilly and me.
“Smooth,” She said, wiping the water off of her face and splashing me back.
“I’d like to see you do it without splashing anyone,” I retorted, flicking my tail so that little droplets sprinkled over her.
“Oh yeah?” Lilly asked, whipping her tail into the water in order to wave water over me. I squinted my eyes closed quickly and splashed her back.
She smiled, blocking the water with her paws.
“If we really want to catch tadpoles, you shouldn’t be stirring up the water, you know,” Lilly muttered, standing up and shaking the droplets of her teal coat. I watched her, then looked down and picked up my net in the water.
“What do you want to do now? We’ve been catching tadpoles for nearly two hours,” I asked, sitting down.
“I know, but it is fun,”
I laughed. I was fun. “We could..have a splash war…” I suggested, raising an eyebrow and casting her a sidelong glance.
“I suppose that works…”
“Okay then,” I said, then quickly scooped up some water and threw it at her.
She chuckled, but was on her feet in two seconds, splashing me back. I backed up down the strip of silt and water, kicking up not only water, but also silt.
“I’m going to get you, Toto!” She screeched as she sloshed after me. I continued to half run, half trip down through the water, avoiding the little blobs of water she splashed at me.
“I don’t think so!” I teased, but soon found I couldn’t run anymore. The rock pile lay before me, ending the silt road. I turned around slowly, putting my paws up. “ I surrender!”
Lilly stopped in front of me, a smirk on her face. “I see,” She replied slowly, but gave me a face full of water before stopping the game of ours.
“I win,” She said in a sing-song voice, before turning on her heel and heading back to where we started.
I trotted after her, humming a bit.
“Toto?” She asked, her back still facing me.
“What?”
“You’re really fun,”
I laughed, “Thank you,”
There was a bit of silence as we both sat down on the bank of the creek, the excitement of the day finally getting to us. Only the chirping of the birds could be heard in the distance.
“You know what?” I asked her, turning to face her.
“Yes?” She asked quietly, looking up at me. Her small, but sweet voice was like music to my ears. The flower had begun to fall from behind her ear and into her vision, making it hard for me not to laugh.
“I like you…you’re an awesome friend to have,”
“I like you too,” She replied, a soft smile dancing across her lips. She blushed a little, like she always did.
I've always loved it. I returned the smile, but deep down I knew she didn't mean it the same way I did.

    name:
      Filit
      - means "small bird", it's from a reconstruction of JRR Tolkien's Quenya

    short story under 800 words:
Sunlight caught on heavy, leaf laden boughs, a subtle breeze sending dappled shadows dancing across the forest floor. Fur ruffling in that self-same breeze, the young dragon stared at the ground, claws tapping on the ground, eyes scrunched in concentration as he muttered to himself.

‘If you followed a bird would you fly through the sky?
Run on the ground or not even try?
Would you swim through the sea to search for a fish?
Or stay on the shore with only a wish?’
Pausing, he nodded to himself, a smile splitting his face. “I like it, I like it.” Stretching languidly, Filit settled back on the small bare patch of ground, tail sending small plumes of dust into the air. Humming his newly composed verse, he closed his eyes, swaying back and forth to the bird songs that floated through the trees.
A rasping tweet drew his attention as the jellybean spun around, eyes widening. Sitting in a bush just off the path was a small group of green jays, their green and black feathers flashing iridescently in the sun. Giggling, Filit bounded forward, soft verses springing from his lips.

        ‘Dozens of cousins
        In colors of green
        Are flipping and flying;
        Oh, come play with me!’
With another nasally rass the birds took to the sky, darting between the trees as they headed back into the forest. With a trill of excitement, Filit slipped between the trees, following the birds. Every once in a while the smallest would drop back, offering a few reassuring cheeps before flitting back to the others. Sliding on the muddy path beneath his paws, Filit bounded forward, shouldering through a small veil of hanging moss.
Claws clicking on water smoothed rock, the young dragon stopped, eyes wide as he stared out at a spreading tree, firmly rooted on a small island in the middle of a lake, unreachable save for a small path of stepping stones. Swooping back, the smallest jay cheeped piteously, flying back to circle with the others at the edge of the water. Tilting his head, Filit stalked forward.
Six water-laden bundles of feathers crouched in the pebbles along the shore, the tattered remains of their water-logged nest-turned-boat fractured around them. Blinking up at him, the fledglings huddled together, pulling at his heart-strings. Sinking to the ground beside them, he smiled.

‘Baby birds count one two three,
Would you four like a ride from me?’
With a chorus of small cheeps, the adult jays herded the flightless youngsters onto the jellybean’s back. Trilling happily, the youngest jay settled onto Filit’s head as he stood, hopping from rock to rock as the other adults swooped overhead, trilling encouragements to the band of travelers.
Reaching the island, the dragon hopped up onto a large, gnarled root, stretching his forepaws to make a bridge to the lowest branch. Chirping at the hatchlings, the young jay lifted from Filit’s head, shepherding them up into the tree. Carving circles around the tree, the green jays brushed their wings over the dragon’s back in thanks before arcing back to the limbs.
Grinning, Filit spun in a circle, eyes bright.

‘Found a place where we could be
You and you and you and me.
Skies bright blue and feathers green
Brand new friends who’ll welcome me.
Oh here’s a place where I can see
Exactly what I want to be!’
Laughing, the dragon flopped onto his back, stretching languidly across the roots, head resting on the soft dirt. Humming quietly to himself, Filit slipped into a blissful sleep, a tiny grin creasing his lips as the young jay, enamored of its new friend, settled down in the curve of his tail.

      Imaginative ;; Lackadaisical ;; Excitable ;; Poetic ;; Loving

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?

How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
