short story under 800 words:
Today was one of those days. You know, when there is literally nothing going on, nothing to do; the lack of things to do was driving Ziggy up a tree, literally.
Ziggy dug his claws into the soft, moist bark of a tree, hoisting his small body up a bit in hopes of propelling up the side of the trunk. He has been at this for about ten minutes, feeling as if he had accomplished a lot in scaling the tree. He looked back behind himself, and frowned at the ground that was only two feet below him. Ziggy groaned angrily and unhinged his claws from the tree, falling flat on his rump while glaring angrily at the tree.
About five minutes into the long, heart-retching stare-down between himself and this very pathetic-looking tree, Ziggy got up onto all of his paws and trotted off in hopes of finding something. He wasn't too certain what he was looking for, and he really didn't care, he just wanted something to do!
Then did something that would potentially perk his interest crawl out from the very thick brush and waddle out before his very eyes. A wide grin spread across the small dragon's face as the unsuspecting mouse looked upon his unexpected guest, looking over before it grew bored and trotted off into the clearer area. Ziggy's jaw dropped to the ground in bewilderment. He expected the mouse to fear him, no; he wanted the mouse to fear him! He was a mighty dragon with the strength of five hundred wild horses and he knew for a fact that he was way more ferocious than that pathetic excuse of a creature!
Ziggy bounded off after the mouse, keeping an eye on the slim tail the entire chase, up until he saw the mouse make a sharp turn before his very eyes, and a cactus burrowing its numerous spines into his shoulder and chest. Ziggy watched angrily as the mouse dashed off into the distance of the plains before gathering up the strength to pull his body out of the mighty jaws of the cactus. He managed to pull away with only a few needles stuck in the side of his muzzle, which he simply shook off. Ziggy puffed out his chest, doing his best to retain any remaining pride he had left before heading back to that dreadful, boring tree, and as he took his first step, a sharp pain shot through his paw and up his foreleg. The fur along his spine stood on edge as he stood frozen in his tracks, but then his entire body relaxed as he looked down at the cactus spine digging into the front of his paw with a frown.
'Things would be a lot better if I were to follow them,' Ziggy thought to himself as he used his other paw to hold down the one end of the needle and pulling his paw away swiftly, making sure to step over the needle this time instead of blindly walking onto it again. He headed back to the tree with his head low, his tail dragging along behind him. He felt an ache in his chest as he thought of the green jays, an avian creature he closely related himself to, flying off to the north, leaving him stranded in the thick tropical forest the birds use to call "home".
five words to describe him:
Prideful
Headstrong
Distraught
Energetic
Lonely
(Fun bonus! 8D) Any suggestions for new JBD designs? I think a JBD that looks like a cardinal would be one I'd pounce on in a second!
