Happy Ever After

This story begins on a warm day in autumn in the forests of Finland. Earlier that morning a young kalon by the name of Cassius wandered through the wood retrieving various materials ranging from a simple twig to a few leaves for a fire. He and his mother grew up on the outskirts of a Finnish city by the name of Rovaniemi. They barely had enough currency to survive, so they decided to live off of the land. Cassius didn’t typically like going out on these treks mainly because of the simplicity of the task. Go out and come back. There wasn’t any fun in the journey, or at least that’s what he thought.

Along the path, Cassius casually kicked a rather odd looking stone in various directions out of boredom. “UGH. I wish something exciting would happen in this boring life I live...” he said with a sigh. He paused for a moment before kicking the earth with a furious thrust towards the west. He was about to continue forward, but there was a sudden cry. His ears perked up and his gaze went in the direction of where the stone had landed.

Without a second thought he raced over to the location he was met with something completely unexpected. It was a small Menninkäinen dangling from a tree branch. Blood dripped from its forehead as it dangled, making it quite obvious the beast had been hit.

“Ohgodohgodohgod” said the panicked kalon as he raced to the creature’s side. He analyzed the rope that held them captive and frantically started to untie them from their fiber captor. As it fell, Cassius purposely stood under and caught it. Once in his arms, he tilted his head slightly to the side and his eyebrows raised as he gazed upon the creature. It was simply magnificent.

A smile crossed the face of the kalon as he laid the creature down as it was currently unconscious due to the blow from the stone he had kicked earlier. Soon there was a sudden rustle in the bushes. Cassius quickly fluffed up in response and jumped into the air with his back arched. Emerging from the bushes a much larger Menninkäinen appeared with a worried look upon its face.

“Ah…It’s their baby...” he said softly. Sensing the situation, Cassius slowly headed for the bush allowing the two to reunite once again. “Take care little one…”

response; the kalon slowly trudged along on the moon-soaked grass; the basket containing her beloved egg secure in her jaws. she felt completely drained; her feet, aching. she wanted to give up and rest, but she knew that this adventure would soon be over.

she convinced herself to keep on going. wendell looked up for a moment at the darkened, night sky. there were no stars as far as she could see, but there was something else; the moon. the orb, full and bright, appeared majestic and almost like something from another world. it's friendly light shone down on the earth and on every surface it could touch.

wendell tilted her head back down to look at the egg. there seemed to be a glow coming from deep within the surface of the gemstone. the vivid blue light seemed to give off a reassuring aura. a small smile spread on the kalon's face as she directed her eyes ahead of the two of them.

and there right before them stood their destination...

the lone sound of wendell's footsteps echoed through the cave. the gemstone on the egg, which wendell was using to light up her path, was wildly flashing. she didn't understand what the egg was freaking out about, there was nothing particularly interesting in sight. the kalon was feeling more and more tired the further she went down the path. she felt her eyes slowly closing, but shook her head in protest.

...

a light?

she couldn't quite believe it; there was a faint light coming from down her path. she began to speed up slightly. the closer she got, the brighter this light got. and as the light got brighter, the gemstone on her egg became brighter as well. though, she didn't notice this.

when she had finally made it to the entrance of this hole, she through and into the room-- oh, it was so radiant! its beauty so indescribable! the kalon felt very joyous, although at the same time so fatigued.. the mixture of emotions felt so confusing; but before she could even sort them out, the kalon fell to her feet and into a deep sleep.

wendell's eyes fluttered open as she woke-- why, there was something hovering above her! she rubbed her eyes, fully opening them, and there stood an adorable creature with little horns, blunt fangs, and a large smile-- and most importantly a gemstone. [400/400]

In all respect, I don't know how great I can respond to this prompt you've given me. 'Happy Ever After'? That's... an interesting concept. Theatre contains both comedies and tragedies, so there isn't always a joyful, happy finale. Take Romeo and Juliet, for example, they both died at the end, was that happy? There are so many stories that are considered classics, and yet, do they leave readers and viewers with a good feeling?

'After' implies an ending, and I really haven't gotten that far in my life just yet. I don't know if I'll die happy- my goals and dreams fulfilled, or depressed- broke and alone. Of course I want a happy ending, but can I be so naive to expect one? Being a 'drama geek' was a hit or miss ideal, something that many dream of, but very few achieve. Through determination and sheer luck, I've managed to get an alright job and a possible glimpse at a solid acting career. But will I succeed? I'd be too confident, cocky, and arrogant enough to say.

In life, you need both happy endings and sad closings- like saying goodbye to a friend who is moving away, putting your pet down, anything. These are bittersweet moments, that although you may not wish to repeat, make an impact on your life and allow you to grow.

I can't only have 'happy ever afters' in my life. Of course I've had some, if you'd like me to list a few- getting accepted into college, going to prom with my crush, even winning the stuffed alien I had been dying to get at the carnival. But did these really help me grow? If I hadn't accomplished them, would I have kept going to achieve a happy ending, or just quit?

Don't get me wrong though, I swear I'm not trying to be blunt or arrogant of course! It's probably just my dramatic side coming through, but yup, there you have it. Everyone has their fair share of 'happy ever after's, but to really exceed one's boundaries, they must first feel the sorrow of a bad ending.

Aisake sat down beside her. Theodosia didn't look up. "Theo," he began, and stopped.

Theodosia shot him a dull glance. He looked just as bad as she did; torn clothes, dark bags beneath his eyes, and smelling faintly of scorched earth. Aisake noticed her staring at him and blinked. "What is it?"

That he didn't even seem to notice how bad they looked struck Theo as comical. "We- we must look awful," she choked out between hysterical giggles. Aisake looked stunned and then a little unsure, as if this wasn't really something any sane person would be laughing about. Theo didn't really care.

"Theo?" Aisake tried. "Theodosia. We should probably get moving. Morgana's friends will be here soon, and... I don't think we're in any shape to deal with them right now."

Theodosia frowned. He was right, as usual, but she didn't feel up to going anywhere at the moment. "Can we just sit here for a little bit?" she asked, not meeting his eyes.

Aisake sighed and ran a hand through his hair. He looked so much older than he did two years ago, before Theo had burst into his life and dragged him into this wild adventure of magic and secrets and people who'd kill to keep them. She did feel guilty about that, but mostly relieved that she had someone to share the burden with. Surviving really had been harder before he'd joined her.

The two kalons sat quietly for a few minutes without saying a word. Aisake checked his watch and was about to suggest they leave when Theo spoke. "I really didn't want it to turn out this way," she whispered. "I know it's dumb, but I really didn't."

"You saved both our lives," Aisake said, standing up. "She made her choice, you made yours. C'mon," he added, holding out a paw, "We need to go."

Theodosia hesitated for a moment before grasping his paw and letting him help her up. They stood there, holding hands, looking down at Morgana's body. "Why couldn't this story have had a happy ending?" Theo asked.

Aisake bit his lip. "Not many stories do."

Theodosia stole one more glance at the body of the woman who'd pursued her relentlessly for the past three years and sighed. "Let's go," she said, tugging Aisake towards the car. "But after all this is done, I'm going to make my own happy ending."

"She will be the bane of my existence and the source of all my pain."

Her life is a never ending cycle of waking, getting ready and never moving on.
Amber walked over to her bedroom vanity, sat down and once again stared into the mirror.
"Reflector what am i doing?" Amber asked
"Be specific dear. Also brush your teeth for crying out loud...i swear you get grosser every day."
"Why can't i do anything with my life other than sitting here talking to you?" Amber muttered
Amber than picked up her brush and began brushing her fur absentmindedly. Reflector appeared to think for a moment.
Than a final comment from Reflector broke Amber.
"I don't know and I really don't care."
Amber slammed down the brush and tears beaded up in the corner of her eyes.
"Mirror take me back to the realm!" she shouted at the top of her lungs
Reflector's eyes narrowed and her face darkend.
"I am not yours to command hon. You need to face the future rather than the present.
The fact that you aren't doing anything with your life is your own problem."
Amber grabbed her brush and threw it at the mirror, breaking it. She than ran out of the house down the sidewalk.
She didn't bother catching her breath or avoiding kalons that were walking down the sidewalk.
"Your being unreasonable darling." Reflector called from Amber's reflection in her tail
Amber finally stopped running.
She was at the park near her house. Amber looked around the park. Everyone there was staring at her crying.
"Oh finally! What are you two years old or something?" Reflector growled
Amber looked at the ground sadly and whimpered loudly like a pup.
She was an adult why couldn't she be better than this?
"You alright?" a voice asked
Amber glanced upwards, tears rolling down her face and growled.
"I'm not ok!"
Sitting in front of Amber the kalon rolled her eyes at Amber's actions.
"Yes hello sweetheart. I'm Seventy Crisscross. I'm not stupid so i can tell your not ok.
Since your depressed I thought you'd need someone that pretends to care."
For some reason the irony of meeting someone like herself and Reflector made Amber crack up suddenly.
Amber than smiled and her tears faded away.
"Well thanks. Amber is my name." Amber smirked than joked
"Now go away you pain."

You close your eyes, feeling satisfied. Somehow Niko managed not to lose his work, and the pair of you came first in the competition. From a 'Participation Award' to 'First Place'. What a jump. "You're welcome." You hear Niko say, and sit up, wiping the smile off your face with some effort.

"What are you talking about?" You reply quickly. "I never said thanks or anything remotely like that. You came this," At this point you hold two fingers together a hair's breadth apart, "close to losing your work again. And I swear, if you lost your work again I'll get a different partner and you can work alone." Niko only grins, and you couldn't stop the returning grin.

"You're saying thank you from that smile, and plus you just said I didn't lose my work. That's thanks to my ears." Niko says, nodding. "And you won't even let me touch that award, come on, lemme touch!" You snatch the award from his lunging paws, and hold it an arm's length away.

"You'll only lose it." You say teasingly. "Anyhow, it was nice to rest. It's another month already, I can't believe it. Let me guess: You signed up." Every month, a new competition arises, and every time it had to be done in teams of two. Really, if you were truthful, you won't have it any other way.

"You know me too well." He laughs, getting up and patting your shoulder. "Yeah, it's another competition, and it's about fairytales! And before you ask, the requirements are for the teams to research the background of popular fairytales and verify if the ending is possible."

"So it's about if endings can be happy." You summarise. "Well, that eas--Hey!" Niko had craftily snatched the award from your paws while you were talking, and you give chase, laughing all the while.

It was the right choice, you think as the pair of you handed in your work, with Niko’s work intact, to be friends with this erratic kalon. Life's just that bit crazier, but that's not a bad thing!

"Ay, another competition done and dusted! Hey, remember how I said I'll show you my caterpillars? Ya know, back during the mystery competition? Well, now's a great time! Come on!"

I spoke too soon. Maybe I should revise that thought. You think as he cheerfully drags you off.

Magnus’ eyes swept over his masterpiece. He’d been working on a small cottage for a while, and he only finished it now, it was a bit small, but there was a small bedroom and a circular room for his large black couch. There was a large circular window above the couch, covered by soft yellow curtains. He stretched onto the large couch, deciding to open a book until it became dark enough for the strange creatures to come out.
It was a dull hour or two later before the sun had set. Magnus laid down the book, he hardly got through seventy pages, as he couldn’t help but getting excited about showing it off to the friendly creatures he had grown to become friends with. He stood up, and confidently strode out of the cottage and straight into the forest. He walked through the forest for a long while before seeing familiar blinking lights. He walked to find familiar little deers waiting on a tree stump. They weren’t just small, they were miniscule.
“Hello beauties” Magnus complimented them, and their tails glowed brightly. He opened up his palm and a most of them flew to it, their small wings fluttering quickly. He gently picked up the others, and they did not protest. He turned on his heel and started to walk to the cottage. A few footsteps later, a rabbit with large dragon wings clumsily flew towards them. Their strong wings broke a few branches, before they landed on Magnus’ shoulder. He turned his head slightly, but didn’t mind. The more the merrier!
“Well well, I see you’ve come to join me” He stated with a smile. He kept walking, and after a short while he had reached his cottage. He opened the door carefully, trying not to let the animals on his arms fall, especially since the rabbit was tottering. He stepped into the cottage, and walked to the couch to lay the deers down on the couch. They quickly flew to areas of the house they liked, some taking off before he even laid them down.
“Well if you like this place so much, you should live here!” He joked. He didn’t expect much response from the animals. Despite what he thought, even the rabbit made a noise that seemed like agreement, and so for the days on he let the animals stay with him, happily ever after.
