Pronouns: they/them & it/its
Name meaning: '篝', or 'kagari', means campfire. 影, or 'kage', means shadow / silhouette. the name means 'campfire silhouette'. i took the on-yomi of both of these words, first コウ 'kō' and then エイ 'ei' to form the name, using this guide and this dictionary.kōei's name comes from their hatching circumstances.
though unusual in some regions, fusion is commonplace in the mitos region, a phenomena which has enticed many outsiders to seek out the supposed mystique of the island. kōei's mother, an eevee named kaiku [化育 ; on-yomi カイク, meaning 'evolution'] who had spent most of her life in tōku town was a native to the island, and well aware of the chances of a hybrid offspring should the parents be two different species- heck, even different egg groups could produce pokemon the likes of which had never been seen before! kōei's father, however, a sneasel named bleak, was a curious traveler's companion. after settling in the region, the sneasel had taken a liking to mitos' locals, especially kaiku. though the traveler had taken up residence in a more populated city, the sneasel often wandered at night and found himself in tōku town- a ghost town run entirely by pokemon. they had their own bartering system, mini governing power, and roles to keep the town stocked with necessities. kaiku was a gatherer, often traipsing far from the town to collect berries and herbs for the town's stock. she met and guided bleak to the town on one particularly stormy night, and the two became close quickly.
when kaiku and bleak expected an egg, kaiku feared for the safety of the hatchling. after all, it was getting cold in this part of the region; because of this, she nested with the egg near constantly, relying on the townsfolk and bleak to bring her food. on the rare occasions that kaiku would leave the nest, she prepared a simple campfire to keep it warm. it was during one of these times, in which kaiku had left to go fetch herself a snack while bleak was absent, that kōei hatched! kaiku returned to a horrifying sight- the campfire had casted a shadow on the wall of kōei's form, still hunched and testing out their new limbs. once her momentary heart-attack faded, kaiku had a laugh, and held her new baby.
upon reiterating the story to bleak, he suggested a name that befit the situation- and kaiku agreed. she settled on kōei, for his connection to tōku town and the circumstances alike.
