his secret: he once stole a kitten from another cat. embers never fancied himself to be a bad person, someone who would interrupt with a family, or do something immoral. he always maintained that his character was strong.

he grew up in a quiet home, one of three kits born to his mother. growing up, he always knew love and patience. his siblings were a little rough with him, always play fighting or blaming mischief or mistakes on each other. they were a rowdy bunch, always causing some sort of trouble for their mother to deal with.

but despite all of this, he knew he was loved. sure, they played rough and caused a lot of trouble for their mother, but they truly loved her, and they loved each other. they were inseparable, and their home life was stable and caring. embers and his siblings grew up in a nurturing environment.

which is why when he saw a kitten that wasn't in that environment, he sprang.

the kit was tiny; a little she-cat old enough to eat solid food, but still in need of love of care. (though then again, don't all of us deserve love and care, child or adult?)

the kit was a housecat, and she would push her head through the closed drapes to look at the outside world beyond her, eyes somber as she stared at the leaves and the birds. she was searching for something.

at one point, ember had firmly believed that all cats were better off indoors, like how he had grown up. there, they would be safe from predators and the weather, and they could live with their needs taken care of. there would never be worried about starvation, disease, or hostile cats and bigger animals that might eat them as prey.

but seeing this kit made embers think differently. despite only ever venturing out to his twolegs' backyard, he knew this kit was better off without twolegs in her life.

her human would visit the house about once a week and barely feed her, she said to embers through the closed windows. he was neglectful and didn't care for her dignity or her survival. locked inside, she had no way of helping herself, so she had to get away; and embers agreed, and he promised to help her.

so embers went back to his house, and pondered how to save the kitten. he and his siblings and mother all agreed to find a way to help bust her out of the prison she was in. their plan was simple; wait until they were let out for garden time, and while their twolegs were out on the weekend for dinner, they would try to break open the window that embers so frequently saw the kitten sit at.

with rocks, claws, and a lot of effort, they managed to crack and then shatter the old dilapidated window and free the kit. together they hunted for her, and she ate a real meal for the first time in forever.

later on, they had assisted her with going around the neighborhood and begging at other twolegs doors; eventually, a family with two twoleg kits of their own decided to adopt her and take her in.

in the end, embers felt satisfied knowing that she had new humans to help take care of her. she would be safe there, and they could communicate through the open windows. she would be safe, fed and happy, and he could always visit her. he would often come home to the clan smelling of the kit and her new twolegs, but he always denied anything about his life prior to joining the clan of blooming roses.
