Strawberry wondered how much longer they wpuld have to walk before they stopped for a snack again. His stomach was beginning to grumble and with every step he felt hunger pains stab at him from all sides of his belly.
Martyre, who had been walking with him since the day before the last looked at him with a grin.
"Youre hungry again? But we just had some fresh grass an hour ago!" She laughed.
"I know that, dont you think i know that? Its my stomach that doesnt. Besides an hour is enough time for second breakfast." The words had hardly left his mouth when another grumble came from his stomach.
The rider upon strawberry's back let out a loud hardy chuckle at the sound and pulled strawberry to the side of the trail while the other continued onwards a bit. He took out an apple, a carrot, and some oats for strawberry to nibble on. The appaloosa stallion crunched away on his snack wishing the rider had given him the sweet dilectable treat he was named for; strawberries. The though of them made his mouth water and for a moment he thought he could taste them. The rider decided he had had enough and climbed back onto the stallion's back to continue the journey.
After catching up with the others strawberry galloped over back to martye, he felt a special connection between them growing as every moment passed. He enjoyed her refreshing personality and light heartedness. The two had talked about being together and decided it would be a joyous thing. They even talked about moving stables to sleep near one another. They thought it enjoyable to imagine it that way but they both knew that it wasnt their decision but rather the riders choice.
Upon his return martye gave him a playful look.
"I can smell the carrot on your breath you know. I cant believe you didnt share with me!" She joked.
Several more hours passed as the two walked side by side. Every once in awhile strawberry and his rider stopped for more feedings. The night crept on them like a cat following a mouse. Silent yet steady until the right moment to pounce and throw the world into darkness.
The riders gathered in their sacks to sleep the night through while the horses were tied to a fallen tree to rest.
Strawberry and martye fell asleep giggling to themselves over something silly like what kind of grass tasted the best in winter.
He drempt about the different foods back home until he woke with a start. His belly had grumbled him awake. Emberrassed he looked to see if anyone else was awoken by the noise of his belly. To his relief no one was stirring.
Strawberry shifted his wieght trying to rock himself back into a dream state but to his annoyance he was unable. His belly continued to grumble and strawberry looked around for something to ease his hunger. He could see out of the corner of his eye a carrot hiding in his riders pocket, but how would he get to it? He thought to himself. Strawberry tugged at the lead that kept him to the fallen log with the others. At first it looked useless byt after a few tries the knot began to loosen and soon enough strawberry was free.
Strawberry did his best to quietly creep along so as not to awaken anyone. He trott over to his rider and quickly crunched the carrot down. A single carrot was not enough to satisfy him though. So he searched for anything else left out. He did find a strange bottle of liquid that he gave a lick. He snorted a few times as the bitter taste assulted his tongue. Now he was even more desperate for something to please his palate.
Strawberry decided it would be better to search away from camp for something more natural perhaps. He looked as best he could into the darkness and was about to lose hope when he saw a familiar red berry. With a new burst of joy he galloped over to the bush with the red berries and gulped them down. They tasted a little funny though, it wasnt the familiar sweetness he was used to. The appaloosa stallion shrugged it off. Perhaps they werent ripe? Or maybe the strawberries just tasted different in these woods.
After satisfying his belly once again, strawberry returned to the log with the others and quickly fell asleep.
When strawberry woke up he felt an immediate pain in his belly, he felt he was going to be sick. Martye who had been awake for quite some time now gave him a worried glance and asked what was wrong. He told the mare about his late night snack. Martye asked him to take her to the strawberries and so he did. When the arrived it became very clear that the berries he had eaten that night were not strawberries but rather poison berries. Martye shook her head to and fro and neighed loudly so as to get the attention of the riders. Strawberry looked emberressed but was secretly grateful for his friends concern.
The riders examined the berries and grouped around. They brought strawberry to an empty clearing where they gave him a foul tasting liquid and soon his late night snake reappeared in front of them. Strawberry felt a little better but was still feeling very poorly.
All the riders and horses geared up to continue the search but strawberry wasnt being led the same way as the others. No instead he was going the way they came from.
He knew what this meant. His journey was over. Strawberry felt a pang of sadness as he realized he didnt get to say goodbye to maytre. When would he see her again? Back at emberoza stables? Or did his rider think he wasnt worth the trouble and would sell him? Strawberry felt even more sick at the uncertainty of his future fate.
