Prompt:"AAAAHHHHHHH!"
Jack leaps onto all four paws, letting out a startled woof. He scrambles across the hardwood floor into the next room, ready to protect his owners from whatever made them scream.
But they're... laughing?
Weren't they terrified of something a moment ago?"Arf!" he barks in confusion.
A crash followed by a loud bang and another scream comes again from the tv.
"It's ok Jack," his owner says, reaching down to scratch behind his ears. Jack relaxes.
Ah, so the scream wasn't real."Aw, is Mr. Jack O' Lantern scared?" his owner's friend coos at Jack, making him wag his tail. He barks defiantly.
I'm not scared! I'm protecting you!The friend chuckles. "No, you're too brave, aren't you Jack? Hey, why don't we take him out? The movie's almost over and I'm sure Jack would love Halloween!" she asks Jack's owner.
Jack cocks his head.
Halloween?"Hm, yeah! I think he would like it! And after all, Jack should get to know the day he's named for," his owner says, standing up and grabbing Jack's leash from its hook.
A walk! Yay! he thinks, unaware of what's in store.
We don't usually go on walks at night! This will be so much fun!"Wait! He needs a costume, don't you think?" his owner's friend reminds his owner.
"Oh yeah! What should we dress him up as? Wait, I know!"
His owner runs into the other room, leaving a surprised and puzzled Jack standing by the door, patiently waiting with his leash on.
-
30 minutes and a increasing confused Jack later, they're ready to head out.
Finally! Jack thinks, scratching at the shirt and backpack they put on him. Eagerly, he pulls on the leash and his owner, her friend, and him step out into the night.
"Isn't he adorable in his
Ghostbusters costume? I almost forgot I bought it for him," his owner says as they head down the street.
"Oh yes, he's so cute!" her friend replies.
Jack quickly tunes out their boring conversation and looks around with bewilderment. Huge spiderwebs cover every bush and tree and skeletons litter the front yards.
What happened here? Jack wonders, sniffing one pile of bones.
Oh well, they're dead now. Better make the best of it.Jack leans out and snatches one of the bones, quickly spitting it out as he bites into... plastic?
These bones aren't real, he thinks with relief (and a bit of disappointment).
"Jack!" his owner gently scolds him, putting the bone back on the lawn. "Come on boy, you're going to like the haunted house."
Jack's tail wags and his ears prick up at the sound of small voices laughing.
Kids! He lunges forward, excited to see them. Jack loves everything about kids, from their bubbly natures and frequent petting to how there always seems to be food on the ground around them.
"Puppy!" a group of them squeal, spotting him. Jack begins to happily walk to them, but he hesitates upon seeing them.
What- what are these things? The small figures moving towards him
sound like kids and
smell like kids, but they sure don't look like them. Jack starts, jerking back on the leash.
"Aw, it's ok Jack! They're just kids wearing costumes," his owner says gently.
"It's ok puppy. See?" one of the kids removes his scary vampire teeth and another takes off her Iron Man mask.
Jack's tail starts wagging again.
Oh, yay! It's just kids! They giggle, petting the once again happy Jack.
"Bye puppy!" they wave at him, parents finally pulling them along.
Bye kids! Jack thinks, staring after them.
Jack's owner pulls him along and he trots by her side in contentment. He had already seen kids and is on a walk while it's dark out! Could this night get any better?
"Ok, next up is the haunted house!"
-
The house doesn't seem the least bit haunted. Sure, it has the same spooky cobwebs all over the bushes and plastic skeletons in the yard, but as Jack now knows, those are nothing to be afraid of.
So Jack walks, head held high and fearlessly, with his owner and her friend to the house's garage. A black sheet covers the garage's inside and Jack feels a momentary jolt of fear pass through him at the screams.
Those are fake, he reminds himself. Jack's finally got this holiday all figured out. For some reason (Jack can't begin to guess why) the humans had decided to scare each other by dressing up as monsters. Perhaps they are scaring away some big make-believe monster too? But on top of that, the kids keep running up to each house on the street, yell "Trick or treat!" and are given a treat. Jack frowns at this, even more puzzled. He hadn't seen any of the children do a trick and yet they still got a treat. Even he knows that's not how it works! Humans... they're strange.
Silly humans. It's a good thing dogs look out for them. The screams from the garage grow louder now and two adolescent humans come running out through the black sheet. They look scared but begin laughing.
"Is the haunted house good this year?" Jack's owner asks them.
"Oh yeah," one of the boys say.
"Great!" Jack's owner looks down at him. "You ready boy?"
The nervous twinge in her voice makes Jack wag his tail faster and let out a low growl. He didn't know what his owner was going to face, but he was sure going to protect her!
The two of them start towards the garage (his owner's friend choose to stay behind for some strange reason). Pushing aside the sheet, Jack and his owner step inside.
His eyes adjust slightly to the darkness. He can feel his owner grip the leash just a little bit tighter. Almost blindly, the two of them walk through a maze of sheets, hung up to divide the garage. Then-
"Rawr!!" A shadow leaps out of nowhere and Jack's owner screams.
"Brrruff!" Jack barks, heart pounding in his chest. Shaking, Jack positions himself between the shadow and his owner.
Why are we in this place?Seconds later, Jack looks around. The shadow is gone!
"Haha, good boy Jack," his owner strokes him gently. "See? It's fun!"
Jack stands there for a moment, considering that. They are both ok, so the shadow must have only wanted to scare them. Then it hits him. The adrenaline rush and shaky feeling after the initial fright- it wasn't all that bad. In fact... it was kind of fun.
So that's why we're here! To have fun!Jack grins, licking his owners hand. Now he gets it!
They move through the rest of the garage, the shadow returning three times to frighten them. Instead of waiting for its inevitable arrival with terror, Jack now waits with excited anticipation. Each time it leaps out of the darkness, Jack lets out a surprised but happy bark.
When they finally find the exit, Jack's tail is wagging so hard that it's whacking his owner's legs. She just laughs at this as her friend rejoins them.
"So, how did Jack like the haunted house?"
"Oh, he loved it! You should have seen him! At first he was frightened, but then he started almost... I dunno, if I didn't know better I would say it looked like he was enjoying it! I didn't think a dog could ever like being scared, but Jack, well, it seems he's a thrill seeker!"
Jack looks back and forth between them, paws itching to move.
Why are they just standing there? Let's go through it again! He's decided that this 'Halloween' is pretty great.
