prompt:
it wasn't necessarily easy for epona to realise her feelings for the other mare. She had prided herself on being flawless and the lead mare of the stables, keeping her walls high and making sure she never got too close to anyone, but when she first met the nervous buttermilk mare, her entire world felt like it had come to a stop. She had stared at her as she watched Carolina being unloaded, her hooves shaking as she clattered down the ramp and half reared in fright. Epona had been chewing grass in the paddock on her own, her other herd mates on the other side of the field as epona had been in a particularly bad mood that day and sought to be on her own. She watched with focus as the mare was led towards the stables, her head tossing and looking around at her new environment, not out of curiosity but fear.
Epona simply put her interest down to her own curiosity of the new mare that would be joining the herd, and started to walk down the fence, almost in line width Carolina, who seemed to finally take notice of the more confident blood bay mare, who pinned her ears on instinct at the stare as their eyes locked, snorting and stomping slightly as she came to the end of the fence and had to watch her continue off til she reached the stables. Epona had relented and went back to grazing but her mind had continued to think about the buttermilk Mare, of how afraid she had been, of how she could see her ribs, of how the only calls she made were of uncertainty and panic. She must have come from a bad background. Epona had felt pity for her at that, and decided she would do her best to help her settle in when it came to finally meeting her.
It took a week or two until that day, with only fleeting glimpses in the stalls when she passed or seeing Carolina on her own in a small round paddock outside. The day did eventually arrive however, and of course epona was the first one at the fence line, when Carolina was led forward and had her lead rope removed as she was let off to run and meet her herd mates. Epona couldn't help but stare again, she certainly looked healthier now with a bit of shine to her coat, and epona couldn't help but relax as she walked forward. She let down her bossy persona as she greeted the new mare, taking in her scent and making small talk and just in general welcoming her. As time went on she showed her the ropes and showed her where was best to graze or get shade when it was hot, and it was on the evening of their first time together in the paddock that epona realised she must have felt something special for her.
Carolina was the first Mare, or other horse for that matter, that epona had allowed herself to get close to and keep her company. She lay there in the grass with Carolina grazing just in front of her, her eyes looking over all of the mares snowflake Markings as their eyes locked and she felt her face lighten with a smile, which was returned with a shy smile and blush from Carolina. With the setting sun framing her beautiful shilouette, epona finally came to realisation and settled on the fact that she loved Carolina, and that she would do whatever she could to make her happy.
