Name: Caroline
Gender: Heifer
Collar color: Color of the stars with a white butterfly

Prompt:
When Caroline was very small, her father sat her next to him in the meadows on a warm and sunny spring day. "Caroline," he said, sitting down comfortably on the grass. "I want to tell you a story." Caroline's eyes widened and she trained all of her attention on him. "This was a story my mother told to me, that her mother told to her." He cleared his throat, and took a deep breath. "Are you ever out running through the tall grass, letting it tickle your belly and cheeks, and suddenly see a very calm butterfly?" Caroline nodded fervently. "Do you notice how that butterfly doesn't fly away, even if you get very close? Well, let me tell you why. As you grow up, people you know might get very sick. Sometimes when this happens, they get too sick to be able to go on any longer, so, instead of continuing on in pain and sadness, they turn into a butterfly." Caroline gasped. "They get to keep all of their memories and thoughts, but because they are butterflies they can't tell us who they are anymore. So, instead of flying away when they see someone that they love, they stay with you for a little while. It helps them to feel better if they're feeling sad or lonely, because they had to leave all of their friends and family behind." Caroline's eyes sparkled in wonder. "Can I go and find a butterfly right now?" She asked, jumping to her feet. Her father nodded and she ran off into the grass, giggling all the way. If she would have looked back, she would have seen the heartbreak in her father's eyes, and the tears he tried so hard to fight, but couldn't keep from slipping down his cheeks and into the grass.
And just then, while Caroline was running rampant through the grass, a soft white butterfly landed on her father's shoulder.

When Caroline got older she grew out of believing in that fairytale, but never forgot it. She wasn't aware at the time, but it helped both her and her father through a very tough time. When their 'three musketeers' turned to two and he first introduced that story to her, it was an easy way to help a small child cope with the loss of a mother. It was simply so much easier to think of her as a butterfly in the field now instead of lost forever.
