How did the date go wrong?
"Bernadette?"
His voice caught my attention, and I turned in the direction of the handsome stranger it belonged to. He gave me a smile, which I returned.
"That's me," I said. "You must be Tim."
I couldn't believe I'd let my friends talk me into going on a blind date. I mean sure, maybe my love life hadn't been very exciting for the past few months...or years, if you wanted to be specific. But I'd never done anything like this.
We embraced, and I felt a flicker of hope. That was until he made the comment, "You're quite short, aren't you?"
I forced a laugh. "Can't help genetics, I suppose." I'd gotten that comment many times before, and tried to brush it off as being innocent. He seemed nice enough so far.
He opened the door for me as we entered the building. Soft piano music. Crystal chandeliers. I wasn't sure I'd ever been in a restaurant so fancy.
We sat down, and a waitress came over with menus. We ordered, our food came, things seemed to be going well. We talked a lot. Or rather…he talked a lot. If I wasn't polite, I might have said he was dominating the conversation which, seemingly to his delight, he'd made about himself. So I listened and nodded until finally, after half an hour, he asked me a question.
"Do you own your own house?"
"Apartment, actually," I replied.
"That's nice," he said, in a tone that indicated it wasn't. "Where do you work?"
"I own a cat cafe," I said proudly. "Did it all up myself."
He raised an eyebrow. "What, like, those places where you eat around animals? Isn't that kind of dirty?"
I blinked. "No. No, it's not. We still have health and safety regulations to meet."
If he heard the sharpness in my tone, he ignored it. "So what made you want to do that?"
"Well I've always loved baking, and ever since I got my own cat I've been really passionate about working with the local animal shelter-"
"You have a cat?" He interrupted, nose wrinkling.
"You don't like cats?" I asked, and he shook his head. "I'm not a 'pet' sort of guy. I certainly couldn't live with any. I'm not sure why people are so fond of them."
That irked me. How did my friends think I'd like this guy? He was the definition of 'not my type', and they'd set me up with him?
The conversation drifted away from me again, which was fine, because I was less reluctant to talk. I'd barely told him two things about myself, and it felt like he was looking down on me. I remembered the short comment, and was even more sure.
We finished dinner, and the waitress came over with the bill. "I'll pay," he said, flashing me what was supposed to be a winning smile. I didn't buy it.
As he reached for the bill his hand knocked a glass, and suddenly my lap was doused in water. I jerked back in my chair, and his eyes widened. "Oh gosh, I'm so-"
"It's fine," I said through gritted teeth. I stood up, heading for the bathroom and ignoring those staring. I took a few calming breaths, trying to dry myself with a paper towel. It's okay, you don't have to see him again. Just go out, thank him for dinner, and leave.
I exited the bathroom and headed back to the table, but slowed as I realized it was empty. He was gone. As I approached I saw the bill on my side, with a scribbled note at the bottom - "Forgot my wallet, sorry!"
I stared at it, sat down, put my head in my hands and resisted the urge to cry. I stayed like that for awhile. No one dared come over. This was without a doubt the worst date I'd been on, and they knew it. More than anything, I was embarrassed.
Something was placed on the table in front of me, and I looked up to see a very inviting piece of chocolate cake. I turned to the waitress who'd brought it. "I didn't-"
"On the house, hun," she said, giving me a sympathetic smile. "You deserve it." She squeezed my shoulder and, as she walked off, I thought I saw her wink.
I watched her go. I looked back at the cake, a light blush on my cheeks. Huh. Maybe tonight wasn't a total bust after all.
