Cat Name: Dovestep

Gender: female
Rank: medcine cat
Age: 59 moons
Clan: Ridgeclan

Prompt: 719/1000
Sitting off to the edge of the camp, Dovestep watched as much of the clan gather to celebrate the full moon, her eyes glancing to the clan entrance every now and then as if she was waiting for something.

“Not going to join in the fun?” Fallenstone, the deputy, asked as he moved to the side next to the older she-cat, his eyes flicking from her and back to the festivities at hand.

“Not yet, it’ll be a bit longer before the best part starts,” Dovestep commented, raising her paw as Doekit ran past, almost running into both Fallenstone and herself in the process.

Neither said anything to the kit though as she ran off laughing, headed towards her father and away from an unseen pursuer. The full moon celebration was one filled with laughter and change. It was when kits of age where to be made apprentice and apprentice who had earned there name were made warriors. It was when good news for the clan was announced and new kits were introduced to those who protected them until they were old enough to do so themselves.

“And just what is the best part if I might ask?” Fallenstone questioned, trying to figure out just what the medicine cat could be waiting for. He already knew there wasn’t any news this full moon or at least none that Kestrelstar had shared with him.

“I suppose you might not remember, it’s been many moons since we’ve been able to celebrate with them. They only come out during green leaf, after all, to light up the sky.” Dovestep told him while dodging the real questions for reasons Fallenstone didn’t understand.

“Oh just come with me, we can lead them back to camp, Doekit hasn’t gotten to celebrate while they are here yet,” Dovestep called as she moved to slip out of camp, the rest of the clan paying the pair no mind as they left the others to celebrate.

“You’re not going to tell me what it is we are looking for are you?” Fallenstone asked once more as he followed after the she-cat, although he didn’t expect her to answer this time either.

Dovestep only glanced back and smiled before continuing through the forest, not answering the toms question just as he had predicted. “Don’t worry you will see soon enough.” She called back.

At this point Fallenstone had at least figured out where they were headed, the path to the river a well wore one. It wasn’t a long trek to the closest part, the camp had to be somewhat close to those that couldn’t walk far could get to it and drink.

“Just be quiet and watch.” Dovestep began to whisper, settling herself once more on the banks of the river, face the slow running water ahead.

With a puzzled look, Fallenstone did as he was told and settled next to the she-cat turning to watch the water and the forest beyond it. It wasn’t but a moment after they had settled that he noticed a flash of light out of the corner of his eye. And then another and another slowly more began to appear not just on the other side of the river, but on there side as well.

“Fireflies,” Dovestep said simply while Fallenstone watched in ah. It wasn’t as if he’d never seen the bugs before, he’d just never sat and watched them before and for some reason they seemed even brighter in the full moonlight.

“Can’t have a green leaf full moon celebration without the fireflies lighting up the camp.” Dovestep purred as she eyes the blinking bugs. “Come on let’s lead them back, they have a knack for following.”

Only nodding in response Fallenstone moved to follow the medicine cat once more, glancing back to see that sure enough, the fluttering lights seemed to be trailing after them.

Once they made it to camp it became apparent that the bugs light was the thing missing from the celebration. The flashes filled the camp and light up the corners that the light of the moon couldn’t reach. And of course, Doekit took notice of the new arrivals and raced to investigate.

“It’s not a full moon celebration without them.” Dovestep purred before finally joining the rest of the clan in celebration.

Did you forget me so soon?
The one who made you,
turned you into this monster?
How sad.

Though I guess it's to be expected,
you always liked to block things out.
If it didn't make sense in your mind,
you just forgot about it.

But maybe it's because I didn't,
make you into a monster that is.
You already were a monster,
weren't you?

    Cat Name: Sparrowheart

    Gender: Molly
    Rank: Warrior
    Age: 23 moons
    Clan: PeachClan

Prompt: "Sparrow, dear. You know I trust you with my entire being, but I honestly don't understand what you're trying to do here."
The mute she cat turned to her mate and grinned, glancing back towards the path as she padded along, her tail swaying happily as she focused on the task at hand.

Ferris sighed; today was the day of PeachClan's annual moon high tournament, and while Sparrowheart was supposed to be with the clan making preparations, she'd instead gone off and dragged Ferris with her to do... something. He still wasn't sure what it was yet - usually Sparrowheart was so easy to read, but today she just seemed oddly confusing.
While her mate was fussing over getting her back to PeachClan in time for the opening ceremony, Sparrowheart was glancing around the forest, occasionally pausing to track a scent before continuing on. Ferris couldn't tell what she was looking for; the only scent he could catch was that of prey, and he honestly had no idea why Sparrowheart would be so determined to find a squirrel.

Finally, the molly let out a soft gasp of delight, darting forward through the thickets and leaving Ferris in the dust. Alarmed (and slightly grateful that she'd finally found what she was looking for), the tall tom dashed after her, tearing through the brush in a hurry to find his mate.
When he'd finally found her, Ferris gave a loud groan of frustration. There his beloved sat, cornering three small rabbits and attempting to wrangle them together. Sparrowheart glanced over to her mate, giving a happy little shoulder wiggle as he approached her and the rabbits. "Congratulations, you've found a snack," he grumbled sarcastically. "How wonderful. Now can we please get back to PeachClan? It's almost dusk - the opening ceremony is going to start soon, and if you're late, they'll come looking for you, and what'll Mothstar think if she catches you with me? It'll compromise our mission!"

Sparrowheart rolled her eyes and motioned for him to pick up the largest of the rabbits as she went to grab the smaller two. Ferris groaned yet again, reluctantly stalking forward with his claws unsheathed. "Fine, we'll bring the rabbits as take out. But you'd better get back to camp before-"
The molly quickly shook her head violently, frowning as she grabbed two of the rabbits by the scruff - like a mother would her kits. She looked back at Ferris expectantly, hoping he got the hint.

It took him a second, but when he finally understood, he sighed heavily. "Okay, fine. We'll keep them alive. But I still don't get what's going on - care to clue me in?"
The she cat nuzzled him affectionately as he grabbed the larger rabbit, purring as she made her way back to camp. Ferris, finding no other alternative, dutifully followed.
    ---
As they arrived on the outskirts of the tournament area, the baby rabbits still in tow, Ferris was growing wary and paranoid. With the scent of live prey around, a hunting patrol could easily stumble upon them. Or worse; a predator. Ferris was fairly certain he'd caught scent of a hawk earlier, and he for one didn't have a death wish. However, once they arrived on the very border of the tourney arena, Sparrowheart ducked down into a nearby bush, pinning the baby rabbits down with her paws as she motioned for Ferris to do the same.

Her mate sighed, rolling his eyes as he followed her silent orders, whispering harshly, "Okay, we're here and we brought your little pets. Now what?"
Sparrowheart grinned, passing her rabbits over to a very confused Ferris as she quickly darted off, returning moments later to arrive in the arena. Ferris watched in alarm as his mate greeted PeachClan's leader warmly, and they began the ceremony.

"Comrades of PeachClan," Mothstar began. "We are gathered here today to celebrate our annual moon high tournament, which will commence in less than a few hours."
The clan cats cheered as Mothstar continued on with her schpeal, mentioning that this tournament was to honor PeachClan's ancestors. "And now, we will have our moment of silence for those fallen," Mothstar said, as all cats dipped their heads. "We ask that you remain quiet and peaceful for one minute - this is to show our respects to StarClan."

As Mothstar's head bowed, Sparrowheart made eye contact with Ferris from across the arena and flicked her tail a few times - first subtly, then urgently when she realized he didn't understand her.
Finally, it clicked in Ferris' head. He glanced down at the squirming rabbits, chuckling softly before releasing them into the clearing.
Cries of surprise filled the air as the rabbits, finding no way out of their new surroundings, darted around the arena, tearing up the flowerbeds in their panic.

Mothstar's eyes shot open as she shouted for the cats to get the rabbits, trying to restore peace to the ceremony. As Sparrowheart joined in on the chase, and Ferris turned to run off into the woods (as to evade capture), he couldn't help but notice his mate's smile of chaotic glee.
He chuckled softly as he made his way back to his den, just on the outskirts of PeachClan territory. "What an absolutely mad joker," he purred in sheer admiration.
    ---
    She enjoys celebrating with chaos.

"Congratulations, Peachpaw!" Her mentor, Kestrelfall, wove out of the reeds, golden eyes bright. "You passed."

A thrill of excitement ran through the small she-cat's body - she was becoming a warrior tomorrow! - but she kept her joy contained as she dipped her head respectfully. "Thank you, Kestrelfall." This was the picture she'd chosen to paint: quiet, calm, respectful.

Not too far from the truth, of course, but things were much easier this way.

"That was excellent hunting," praised the tabby warrior as they padded back to camp.

"Mmm," murmured Peachpaw in thanks, words muffled by the pike swinging from her jaws. It had been a difficult catch, no doubt her most impressive, after grappling with the huge fish and dodging its snapping jaws.

They padded the rest of the way in silence, Kestrelfall undoubtedly feeling there was nothing else to discuss with his apprentice. After all, he was a quiet cat, and so was Peachpaw - or what she'd made herself, anyways.

Back at camp, Wrenstar smiled at Peachpaw. "I'm glad to hear you've passed. Congratulations, Peachpaw."

Once again, as always, as the perfectly obedient apprentice she was, she dipped her head and murmured thanks.

Quiet and gentle, soft and sweet. Obedient. She could practically feel their pride at such a respectful apprentice, such a role model, so different from the... incident the many moons ago.

"Now, for your warrior name, do you have any preferences? I was thinking Peachblossom, for both your sweetness and how you've grown from..." Wrenstar paused slightly, hesitant, shifting uncomfortably. "...the beginning of your apprenticeship."

"I'm happy to go with your choice, Wrenstar," responded Peachpaw agreeably. "It's well suited."

"Very well," agreed Wrenstar, clearly pleased. "Your ceremony will be tomorrow at sunhigh."

Her mother used to bring her here.

Just before sunset, she'd slipped out of camp, easily persuading her mentor to let her hunt on her own somewhere near the forest. She was, after all, almost a warrior. Most importantly, however, she was trusted.

Everything came so easily when you could weave yourself a curtain to hide behind, a curtain of calm and obedience and trustworthiness. No one suspected a thing.

Although there was no reason they should; she wasn't doing any harm.

The sunset bled scarlet and vermillion and gold into the darkening sky, bright and vibrant. Despite its beauty, however, the first thing that came to mind was blood, and she kept her head down, avoiding the bright crimson streaking the sky. By the time the sun had slipped below the horizon, all light and morbidly bright colors draining away to let inky darkness take over, the forest loomed above her.

    She had arrived.

Fairy Wood, a little copse where she used to live with her mother.

Ears pricked for sound, she took quiet steps into the undergrowth. Despite being used to living on the marsh, where only low reeds and grasses tickled her paws, she felt at home. The dense ferns and leaves crowded close, whispering as she brushed by.

However, a slight unease pricked her pawpads, coming from a sudden realization:

She hadn't been here since mother left.

Emerging in the clearing she remembered all too well, she sat on the springy grass, tail wrapped around her paws, waiting anxiously. Perhaps things had changed? Perhaps Fairy Wood was no longer the same?

The hoot of an owl startled her.

"It's just an owl, Peach. Just an owl." Her mother cuffed her ear irritably. "No kit of mine jumps at the sound of an owl."

She'd swallowed back her fear, barely daring to breathe. She knew all to well that another peep out of her might result in a stinging cheek or nicked ear.

Drawing in a shuddering breath, startled at the sudden flashback, Peachpaw bit the memories back. There was no use reminiscing now, not when it was in the past. That was when she was young and naive, young and stupid, young and easily manipulated. It was the beginning of a mistake that she never should've made, the beginning of her long journey of shoving back the past and painting a mask of calm over herself.

Her mother had wriggled her way into DeltaClan, playing the part of a mother desperate to find her kit, her only kit, a safe home. Peachpaw was just barely allowed to stay after her mother's failed plot to overthrow Wrenstar and take over herself. It took many moons to painstakingly rebuild herself, and their lost trust, from pieces. After all, she was broken and alone after her mother left her, snarling that she was "a horrible disappointment." This was where her serenity, this game of pretend, came in. Piece by piece she wove the broken pieces together, and today she set the final shard in place.

Tomorrow, under the midday sun, she'd be reborn - stripped of her history and blessed with a new name.

A new name pushing away her past, a new name making way for the future, a testament to her forced calm.

A tiny golden light drifted up from the grass. As if on cue, more fireflies began to appear, filling the air with light - or, as she loved to call them, "fairy lights," hence the name Fairy Wood.

Crickets sprang to life, making themselves loudly known out of sight. Above, through the waving canopy, she saw the silver stars twinkle in their own rhythm against a sable sky.

Her paws skimmed the forest floor as she spun and danced, fireflies blinking, stars twinkling, crickets singing. While she was on the ground, her mind, her heart, her soul was in the sky, among the moon and stars.

Tomorrow would be a new day. Tomorrow she'd be Peachblossom, a full warrior of DeltaClan, who'd gone so far from her past.

But for tonight, she let herself relax and celebrate. She was Peachpaw, and underneath her mask, she was a whole new cat.

Palebird looks back into her life and all she can find is regret and stupidity- she's done so much wrong and been such a fool, she thinks, that even her happiest memories are tainted with regrets.

One such is the celebration with her mateship to Stonetalon, back when they were still in DustClan and she still had his love.

It was a beautiful night- they'd been walking for what seemed like hours, slipping through the trees and underbrush and talking in whispers as they walked. Palebird could remember her heart fluttering inside her like some frantic, caged animal- when she looked up towards the handsome tom strolling beside beside her, she hardly knew what she was saying or doing. The entire stroll had been a whirl of emotions as she waited for him to admit something she felt wold soon be admitted- that clearly there was more to this relationship than just friendship.

"Palebird?"

"Yes?"

"Uh- Your falling a bit behind, try and keep up!"

Every time he asked her anything, he seemed to pull back- clearly he was nervous himself, that or he was trying to annoy her by building up the tension. The two often tried to mess with each other in fun and she let out an annoyed, but amused, purr as she hurried to stand besides him letting her pelt brush against his as she commented.

"I was just barely a step behind you."
"With how slow you are, in a few more minutes, you wouldn't have been." Stonetalon responded with a purr.

They reached the rocky outcrop by sunrise and sat there, together, staring up a the sky and not saying a word. When the son had reached it's height, the dark tabby turned to the calico, his eyes speaking his words before he said them. "Palebird, would you do me the honor of being my mate?"

It was as if the fluttering creature within her was set free- the small calico let out a small, yip sound and pressed her face into the tom's fur, shouting out a happy, almost tearful. "FINALLY! Yes, yes of course I would!"

The celebration that followed was the happiest point in Palebird's life, aside from the birth of her first litter- they reached camp where a few of Stonetalon's close friends already seemed onto them, and started everyone shouting out their names, and throwing collected herbs, plants and flowers their way.

There was a traditional feast and what you might almost called a dance, held- the cats caught prey and feasted throughout, and the dance was a lost of leaping and twirling over rocks and around trees, chasing after leaves and fallen petals.

There was a race- Palebird struggled to beat Stonetalon, who was taller and faster than her, and the two ended up tumbling down a hill after they were tripped up by two apprentices. The four landed in a laughing heap, Palebird crawling over her new mate to reach the finish line before him, letting out a feeble yowl of triumph, before one of her brother pushed her into the lake.

It was all fun and games, and a lot of the older cats watched them with rolling eyes and slightly miffed smiles. Yet Palebird's favorite part was the end of the day, when her and Stonetalon sat, together, up on a tree limb, him whispering corny jokes and making her giggle as they watched the sun, which had risen on their mateship, set on their first day together.

Thinking back on all this, the she-cat's fluttering heart no longer is free like it was freed that day. She is trapped again- in her mind, and in the borders of NocturneClan, where she is watched like a hawk and distrusted, her own daughters and sons turning away from her in fear, or disgust. Stonetalon- she'd done so much to hurt him and trick him with her and her family's schemes. He's finally had enough- she was left alone in NocturneClan, and he'd rejected her wishes to come join him in StreetClan. She would do anything to be besides him again, like she was that day- to see his eyes alight with joy and love for her, and for their family- to redo each step, each trip, and fall, she made in their life's road.

i'm so sorry for the wait on judging, thank you all for your patience! the art was beautiful, and the writing was also very sweet and made me smile. congrats!
