It's Mid-July, and on the way to the airport in Philadelphia, Lindt Bradway didn't even notice the heat from outside the van. He was too engulfed in his tablet, looking over snippets of emails and documents that were being sent from his employer and some coworkers on the same project.
Lindt is a site analyst and bio-engineer who has work in Italy for the next two weeks. There, he will be meeting up with another branch of his team that is working on a new break through for organ transfer research. But, enough of this complicated work, he knew he had to put down his tablet at some point.
Lindt also knew he'd have free time while in Italy to enjoy the sites and food. He's a pretty low-key kind of guy though, so he wasn't overly excited over the matter. Lindt know's he is a bit of an odd ball socially so he'd be happy regardless of how he spent his time.
It's a 13 hour flight from Philly to Rome, and Lindt was more than ready. Making is way to the platform now, his list on what he needed to enjoy his ride came to mind. Which meant he was also saying it out loud as he went towards his seat. "Phone with battery box?--Check. Order a good amount of snacks?--Soon. Weird neck pillow decorated with pineapples?--Ready to wear it."
For most, an airplane ride isn't very comfortable or relaxing unless you're first class. Or in Lindt's case, constantly be in airplanes to get ot meetings. Lindt thought nothing of this trip being special, but he knew he had to make the most of it.
A few hours had now gone by, he had taken a nap, watched The Avengers, and started to listen to his music. It was when he was blasting "The Pina Colada Song" that he rose to go to the bathroom. He hadn't paused it, leaving it playing out his headphones as he walked off. Others hadn't taken much notice of the music since there was a child in the back screaming and other conversations going on. But, a certain viscet did hear it despite all of this. Her ears were pretty sharp, and this song playing was one of her favorites. She sat bewildered. "Who is playing that music?" She whispered to herself. The viscet next to her just shrugged, moving a bit in her seat to get more comfortable.
The girl continued to look around, wondering where the music was coming from, frantically trying to figure it out. She unknowingly was glaring as she sat up to look. This only caused some viscets to either shuffle in their seats or look away. Frowning, Piper eventually gave up, despite her want to find out. Instead, she started the play the song in her own headset and quickly started to space out while looking out her window. As she did so, Lindt passed by, getting back into his seat. Placing his own headphones on, he replayed the song he had missed. The last few hours went past, and the plane had landed right on time. It was now early morning in Rome, Italy. The two strangers, along with the rest of the passengers, went on their way through the airport to their own destinations.
The hotel Lindt made his way to was rather simple, the normal toiletries and a single queen bed in the side of the room. A dark red curtain covered the glass sliding door to the other side of the bed. The room smelled like it was just cleaned and vacuumed. Lindt sighed lightly, placing his luggage beside his bed and immediately taking out his tablet.
Scuffling through his bag again, he found his detachable keyboard and snapped it onto his computer. Moving comfortably on the bed, Lindt looked at the documents he had saved before connecting to the hotel's wifi. Once on, a call came on his skype and he spoke to his boss over the video call about how his ride was and the upcoming meeting.
"Yes sir, I was taken care of well and swiftly once I got here. I rather like this place." Lindt said with his usual quirky smile and nod.
"Good good. I thought it was best to give you a quiet and simple place while you stay. I know you are not one to overindulge."
The man chuckled, before sending over digital documents Lindt had to oversee. Once sent, his boss ended his meeting with another kind comment.
"Do take care of yourself now. These can get done by the end of the week on your time. It's not everyday one gets to be in Italy, you know? I am rather jealous, back here in Philly!"
Lindt shook his head embarrassed. "No, don't be! I miss home, honestly. But, you are right. I'll...I'll do my best sir." With that, the video chat ended and he closed his tablet's screen.
Lindt's face was blank. "What should I do then? Do I go out?" He said out loud to himself, looking at the closed curtains. He laid himself flat on the bed, now looking at the ceiling. "It's mid-day, I suppose. I am wide awake, and could use something to eat..."
Twisting his body back and forth on the bed, he was still unconvinced to sit up. He continued mumbling what he should and should not do for another good 10 minutes before finally throwing himself out of bed.
He changed into lighter, loose-fitting clothes since it was still warm. It wasn't summer like home, but being in the Mediterranean made it almost always warm year round. Once he felt comfortable with himself, he set off on his way. Looking for something to eat on his phone, he led it lead his way.
Meanwhile, Piper had just finished a nice nap in her cozy bungalow's outdoor hammock. Unlike Lindt, Piper was not in Rome for work and some small form of relaxation. No, she was here for a full vacation. Not a worry to think about her mind, at least until she came back! Piper stretched, reaching for a glass of lemonade she had. After a few sips, she looked at her phone. Looking up "places to eat", she scrolled down to find the perfect cafe near her place she was staying at. "Ohh! Awesome, I'm going there!" Piper smiled with a toothy grin, quickly putting on her sandals before skipping her way towards her rented Vespa. With the wind in her hair and the sun shining down brightly, there's no way Piper could ask for a better day!
The cafe's name is Gatsebo Street Cafe, well rated and near the city's center. The restaurant popped up on both of the stranger's phones as most relevant to what they were looking for, so what was about to happen was not a coincidence.
Lindt had gotten out of a taxi when he saw a street vendor speaking in Italian to passerby about tourist attractions. Lindt did not speak fluent Italian but was brought up by his grandmother who had. So, he understood the man pretty clearly. Once entering the shop, he stood behind Piper, who was about to be seated.
He then noticed her and his inner monologue became spoken out loud. "She is quite a pretty girl, isn't she?" Lindt took a moment to realize his statement, but it was too late. Piper turned around, red as a cherry. "Did you just--?"
"Ah, seats for two? Follow me then." The short, pudgy waiter said passingly as he turned.
Lindt shook his head while Piper threw her arms around frantically. "No, we aren't together!" They said in sync.
The waiter eyed the two then sighed heavily, showing them two small tables on the patio beside each other.
"Alright then, I will be back to get your menus then."
Before either could say anything else, the man was gone. "He's quite fast for such a short man," Lindt said, again uncontrollably while scratching his cheek. Piper made a shocked face, leaning towards him.
"You don't have a silent mode, do you?" She said, holding in a laugh. "You weren't serious by the way, ah, were you? About me?"
Piper didn't want to know partially, as she still was red in the face over the little statement. Lindt looked nervous and hid his face as the waiter returned with separate menus. He dug his face into the menu immediately.
"...Un bicchiere di Chianti Classico, per favore..."
The waiter brightened up when Lindt spoke. "Ovviamente!"
The stout waiter then looked to Piper, who was confused but cleared her throat. "Ah...do you have pina coladas here? Or just pineapple juice?" The short waiter nodded, a bit let down by her american preference of a drink. Once the waiter began walking off, Piper turned back to Lindt.
"You speak Italian easily, are you a local?" Lindt shook his head, still not looking at Piper. He was trying so hard not to open his mouth and not to think. If he even thought of something, he'd say it, or that's how it felt in the moment. Something about her made him speak out his monologue freely. He wasn't quite a fan of it, but he certainly didn't want to freak out her with it. How tiring it was explaining himself every time to each new stranger...
The girl made a pouted face. "You don't have to ignore me, you could just tell me you don't want to talk."
"I apologize. I am afraid I have caused you trouble." Lindt said, pushing the menu down to the table. His golden eyes met hers'. "I do know some of the language, Italian that is. I was raised by my noona...grandmother who spoke it fluently."
His eyes quickly darted to the ground. Looking into one's eyes isn't something he can do easily.
"Social manners...Social etiquette..." He murmured before speaking up. "M-my name. It's Lindt, Lindt Bradway. What is...your...name?"
Lindt was struggling even harder to look back up, but he knew he had to be polite.
"Piper. Piper Nebulon." She said with a wide grin. Resting her chin on her wrist, she tiltied her neck a bit. "You're an interesting fellow, Lindt. May I eat with you? Hope that's not weird, we are sitting beside each other anyways!"
Piper was speaking like her normal, comfortable self now. Unlike Lindt, Piper had no issues with talking to others. She just had to feel him out. But, the guy could say what was on his mind whether he liked to or not. Piper thought she had no filter, but Lindt took the cake.
Lindt was shocked. The lady didn't just shrug him off? Or politely nod and go about her business? She wanted to continue talking to him! Lindt's mouth dropped, but for once, nothing came out.
Piper giggled and sat over to the opposite of him. "I am was going about this trip alone, but making friends along the way was alsoin my plans." Piper started, explaining why she was in Italy and what drove her. She didn't care whether or not she had companions. Lindt didn't say much but instead focused mostly on her discussion. Once and a while he murmured how the food or wine was, but was silent otherwise. The waiter who had come back and forth had an amused look on his face like he knew regardless the two would've ended up sitting together.
Piper then asked something the guy tried to pass by. "So... you didn't tell me. Did you mean what you said, about me being pretty?"
Lindt was wide-eyed, but he his mouth answered on no command. "When I say things out loud, they are my opinions. My thoughts."
Piper frowned a bit but nodded, taking a bite from her meal. Silence fell for what seemed forever. Breaking the tension, Lindt then looked over at the street beside them. It was almost dusk now. It was then he noticed time was going too fast, not slow. He found it very odd but refreshing. A small smile appeared on his face as he looked on.
"I thought you were pretty, and you certainly are."
