- In the distance, she watched him from the safety of her den, her large eyes locked onto his hide as the muscular male casually made his way about the camp. He spoke with Whiteraven casually, the two males exchanging pleasantries and speaking of the prey around the camp.
"Hey,"
The voice jerked Ambersky to reality and she whipped her head around to stare at Frostheart with wide, startled eyes. The soft female tilted her head and sat beside her, sensing that something was off.
"Are you okay?"
"Ah, yes. I was just lost in thought."
Frostheart nodded slowly, her gaze drifted to the two toms Ambersky had been watching. "So, what do you think of the clan?"
"It is nice, here. Everyone seems to be very welcoming and kind. Thank you for letting us live here."
Frostheart nodded slowly and smiled. "Of course, though it should be Cedarstar you are thanking. She convinced us all to let you both stay." She paused and glanced at her with a frown. Ambersky hadn't spoke much at all to Cedarstar, even when the she-cat told her she was welcome to stay in the clan.
Ambersky nodded absent-mindedly and turned her gaze back to Tornhawk. The tom looked back at her and smiled and she quickly returned the gesture, though she dropped it the instant he looked away. Beside her, Frostheart noticed and frowned.
"So, you and your brother,"
"What about him?" She spoke quickly, her eyes turning sharply to Frostheart, who lifted her head slightly in surprise.
"Um, how do you think he's getting along?"
"Oh. I think he's doing fine. He's a very confident tom. . . he can adapt to any situation." Her eyes drifted to her brother once more and her fur bristled on her back.
"Uh-huh. . ." Frostheart slowly stood and bumped her nose against Ambersky's shoulder. "Well, just let me know if you need anything." She turned away slowly and walked back to the warriors den, though her eyes lingered on the she-cat behind her for a moment.
Ambersky sat beneath the dark sky, perched up high in her tree and anxiously watching the area around her. The clan was quiet and asleep, leaving her to watch over them. It was the time that he had planned to speak to her without any prying eyes or ears, and she knew he would be here any moment. The thought made her tail curl tightly around her and her pupils widen, taking in everything within her sight.
"Lovely night, isn't it?" Ambersky jerked her head back and stared at Tornhawk as he easily hopped up into the tree and sat beside her. He smiled warmly at her, then turned his gaze to the clan below. "What do you think? Nice clan, isn't it?" He watched her for a moment and she nodded, her body tense and rigid. He sighed and chuckled softly, speaking in a satisfied purr. "And you didn't believe me. You told me that my idea was bad, that it wouldn't work, but now look at us. . . All that's left to do is make friends with the leader, prove our use, and then. . . Little Duskfall will just have to step aside, and Cedarstar. . . well, you get it from there."
He chuckled lightly and Ambersky felt her heart roar to life. Slowly, her eyes turned to him and she stared at the males golden pelt. Beneath the shine of the moon, she swore that she could still see dried blood on his muzzle and chest.
Tornhawk turned his head and locked eyes with her. His expression became odd, grim almost, and he stood to face her completely. "Why do you look at me like that, sister?"
Ambersky felt her body shrink in her pelt. "What do you mean?"
"You look at me as though you've seen a dog." He stepped forward, his head tilting slightly as he peered into her eyes, as if he were trying to read her mind.
"I am just caught up in so many thoughts, the plan is an elaborate one."
Tornhawk's pupils slowly pulled into slits as he nodded. "Uh-huh. . . Tell me, dear sister, have you told anyone?"
"I've told them only the story you've asked me to." Ambersky forced herself to sit taller while her mind screamed at her muscles to relax. She took several deep breaths, meeting the eyes of Tornhawk with what she hoped was confidence. "They don't know anything."
Tornhawk nodded slowly and smiled as he turned his head to the large dead tree which sat at the head of the camp, just above Cedarstar's den. "We will stand up there, together. You as my deputy. . ." His smile widened and Ambersky quickly looked away, flinching internally at the sight of those long, needle-like fangs. "I can almost see it. . . Well, I will leave you now. I must get some rest, afterall. Tomorrow will be a long day." He turned and began hopping down the tree by its branches, but stopped and looked back before leaving completely. "Remember, Ambersky. Tell no one of the past or future. We will let them discover in their own time, understand?"
"Of course."
Ambersky watched as her brother slipped into the warriors den to sleep. Once his tail was gone, she released a breath and gasped for air, her body trembling. Her tail curled around her legs and she shrunk in her pelt, her eyes locked onto the den her brother entered. She had to tell someone, she needed to. However, each time his eyes rested upon her, her tongue was stilled in her mouth and the words would not come. Her claws drove into the bark of the tree and her ears flattened on her skull. How could she ever warn them when her brother's dark gaze never left her pelt?
