Nadyenka

kalon name;; Nadyenka means hope
kalon gender;; female

      fairytale;;
Once upon a time, there was a small kit with silky white fur. Childhood innocence was her cloak against the big bad world. This kit, named Nadyenka, was known for being lucky; her very presence seemed to lift the gloom from the place and instill in it's place a deep joy in the hearts of others. She loved so much this ability to bring joy that she made it her goal to bring this joy to others in need, so much so that those around her would sometimes call her their little unicorn. Filled with excitement at the nickname, Nadyenka made a small unicorn horn, complete with sparkling glue and a string, and tied it around her ears so it sat in her mess of blue hair upon her forehead.

Being a playful kit, she would go on 'adventures' whenever she could. Whether alone or with her friends, Nadyenka loved wandering into the mossy woods nearby, finding something new within its depths every time. One day, she wandered out after dinner. It appeared it would storm later that night, but the kit paid the sky no heed- after all, nothing bad ever seemed to happen to her! Playfully bouncing into the woods, she ventured to a new area of forest, but when clouds covered the sky bringing on a premature night, Nadyenka was lost. Wind began to howl, and the sky threatened to drop loose drowning floods. The kit was panicked. She couldn't find her way home; nothing here was familiar. She began to sprint, looking for anything that would direct her to her family, but there was nothing. The howling winds were trying to pull her off of her feet. There! A cave! Nadyenka took off at a run until she was sheltered inside. The damp cave gave her cover from the storm, but she was still stuck out there. Whimpering an alone, she curled up for warmth, and eventually fell asleep.

Nadyenka awoke to a glowing light. The storm outside had silenced itself; everything was perfectly quiet, except for a slight fluttering. The shape before the white kit's nose soon gained an outline, and began to clarify itself into a winged spirit. "Hello there." the spirit's voice was quiet, almost nothing more than a whisper in the wind. "No one has found my cave for eons." It added as Nadyenka struggled to find the words to reply. "I need to ask you, young kit, what is your wish?"

Nadyenka was in shock. "My wish?" she echoed quietly. "I get a wish?" she paused. This was just like her storybooks, a fairy granting a princess a single wish. "Oh, um, I wish for..." she trailed off, lost. "I wish that I could always help others!" She settled on finally. She didn't want wealth, nor power, or popularity. She wanted the legacy of her unicorn horn to live on.

The spirit hummed over this for a moment, and flew to the corner of the cave, returning a moment later with a silver pocket watch. "Whenever you want to change someone's luck, or help someone in a way you can't do yourself, simply wish for it. But I warn you, every time you wish, you'll use on tick of this clock. When it runs out of time, your power will disappear, and you'll be nothing more than normal."

Nadyenka grew many years older. Innocently she would grant wishes left and right, paying no heed to the time on her silver watch. Before she knew it, she was running out of wishes. And yet, everyone knew her for her power; whenever someone needed help, there would be a knock on her door and someone begging outside. It became harder and harder for the white kalon to grant wishes to everyone, she began to turn others away. And her heart grew dark, selfishness gripped at her. She couldn't run out of wishes! She didn't want to be normal! She moved far away from the town, and locked her door. She saw no one. Sadness overcame her, and she became distant. She was unable to give away anything more. Less knocks sounded against her door until there were none. All of her childhood brightness had faded; the world was grey. Everyday was the same. She had herself convinced that this was better, that loneliness was better than losing everything she had. This lasted for a year before there was a single knock on the door.

Nadyenka felt confused. Who could be out there, any why? She approached the door with caution until she stood on one side of the mahogany slab. "What do you want?" She called out, hoping dearly that it was just her imagination.

"Please, Nadyenka, we need your help." A voice replied, clearly fraught with worry. "The town needs your help. The crops are dying, the wells drying up. Everyone is hungry and miserable. Please, you need to help us." it begged.

Nadyenka backed away from the door nervously. How could she offer help? Her watch was running out. She couldn't do it. Blood pounded in her ears, she gritted her teeth. "No." She growled. "You shouldn't have come here. Go away. I can't help you." She glared at the door, though something deep in her heart stirred for the first time in years. She waited, listening. No more knocks came. Footsteps told her that whoever it was was leaving Nadyenka alone again.

Sullenly Nadyenka laid down on the couch. She couldn't do it, she just couldn't. She had to hold onto her last few clicks, her last few wishes. She couldn't lose the one thing that made her special!
And yet, tears rolled down her face.

She couldn't leave the town to die. She had to help them.

Her gift was worthless if she kept it to herself.

Gathering herself, Nadyenka pulled herself to her paws, and took a deep breath. She had to do this. She had to bring the rains. Pulling her now dusty watch from the shelf, she took off after the townsman, panting for breath in desperation.

It wasn't until late that night that they arrived at the down. She could see yellowed fields of dead crops and faded grasses. The townsman was right, they needed rain. Silently she wished with all her heart, closing her eyes. She heard the tick, tick of her watch, but paid no attention to it. It didn't matter. Above the town, clouds gathered. Nadyenka felt a drop of rain on her nose, and, surprised, looked upwards. It was working; rain had returned. Townspeople came out of their homes at the sound of raindrops on their roofs, and saw Nadyenka there; the white kalon grinning for the first time in years.

Though the watch now read twelve, Nadyenka knew she had found something else, something more important than being special. She had found her joy once again. The smiles of the townpeople, the excited squealing of the children celebrating the rain.

This was more valuable than any wish could ever be.
