If she could rewind the stars, reeling time back to that night…

She’d give anything. Anything and everything ━ selling her heart, soul and voice for just one more day. Just one more. But it was all over and time had unwound, spilling like a broken abyss, emptying its darkness into her daylight and tainting her cheeks with salt. And perhaps that salt would forever marr her cheeks, a hidden tattoo on her heart.

She tensed, grasping the bundle in her jaws tighter. If she could hold onto this ━ this bundle of fauna and flora from that log ━ maybe she could hold onto them. Onto their memory, those last, shimmering moments drenched in rainbows and daylight, ever shining in their iridescence. Every shining, yet… ever fading.

“Let me help ya with that.” Tall and steady, a stranger’s voice boomed. Cinnamon curls wrangled along the length of their forehead, they grinned as they chased after the fleeing beetles. “Cheeky little buggers, aren’t they?”

“... Fennel. I assume Hyacinthpool provided you with what you needed?”

Their head lifted a touch. “Indeed. I’ve given her a token of my appreciation, but I’m… not too sure it helps much.” Their voice lowered an octave, conspiratorial, as they offered a little wink in her direction. “I may have eaten it too fast or something ━ Hyacinthpool had this look the entire time.” (+1 common edit)

Her smile was faint, a wilting lily upon her lips.

“I hate to ask, but you wouldn’t happen to see a friend of mine around?” The stranger straightened, tail lifting a touch. “Can’t miss him, really. About this tall, built like a boulder, but with this loud, cackling laugh that I swear scares the birds and bears. Any chance he’s around here somewhere?”

Could’ve, would’ve, should’ve.

And as he streaked through the wild fronds and frills of the forest flora, their voices chased him. Like a flock of mosquitoes, they lingered, voices as if salt over an open wound, chanting a curse only he would ever hear.

If only he’d played it different, perhaps the cards would be in his favor. Perhaps everything would align in a full flush ━ a full house of mother, brother and… well, him. Maybe then, he wouldn’t be left with a deck of broken promises, shattered hearts and a joker to boot. Grizzlybear. A joker, whose name was foreign, a string of unfamiliar vowels and syllables on his tongue.

But right now, only one thing was familiar.

He leaped, back arching under the faint glimmers of sunlight. His claws unsheathed, reaching out. Feaching out for an avian of ebony and gold, its beak painted with the stroke of daylight’s brush. Feaching out for a creature borne of blood and blue skies ━ something familiar in a realm of unknowns and uncertainties. (+3FP toucan)

“So you finally snapped out of it.” Deep and throaty, the other’s voice resonated, a boom in the quieting hush of the rainforest. “Told ya that crying wouldn’t help. Quite the jumper too, I see. Think you have one more jump in ya?”

Grizzlybear donned a tiny grin. His slender tail unfurled, drifting high above, gesturing to twin branches ━ forked like a bolt of lightning. Within its clutches, silver threads dangled, a web binding the branches in ornaments of geometric patterns and tessellations. Dew shimmered, gently falling upon his cheeks as a spider danced, long ebony legs knitting and weaving around a little bundle.

A bundle that was neither bug, nor insect. Nor anything of this world. (+1 cobwebs, +1 boon of fertility) xx

strewn with the shades of sequoia and auburn, a lonely dandelion wilted beneath the dwindling haze that had fallen over the swoop of the valley. full and brimming with the pillowy touch that remained as its saffron golds withered ever-so softly into nothingness, its song was reminiscent of silence and sweet nothings.

descending like the cruel caress of demons dressed as angels-- if she were the blight of the earth, they were a calamity. bejewelled with ash and dust, they came with adorned with the stench of decay, sickened with the silvery armor of wandering minnows.

“come!” from viper’s lips, there came a delighted cadence unfurling in the serenade of chaos that had erupted from endlessly ebony beaks. “the gulls are plentiful today!”

petite in the midst of shores fathomed of stardust and sugared daffodils, a shivering soul stood reminiscent upon the azure caress of the seas as if entirely unaware of the reality that unfurled from behind.

startling a little, eyes enraptured by the aura of autumn and its auburn embrace met viper’s. “y-yes?” stumbling over her own words, a wince fluttered upon her features.

“what’s wrong?”

“oh… oh nothing.” shrugging ever-so slightly, a soft lyrical chuckle weaved itself into the silence. “just hurt my paw while getting something - [i[that’s all[/i].”

And perhaps the stars had bestowed a gift unto her.

A bouquet from the harvest of autumn, kissed with the fragrance of pecans and fall florals, laced with tales of another life. A life… so different from her own. Rust and gold leaves brushed against her cheeks as gentle as falling rains as she knelt before an aged tree, her side brushing against the calloused whorls.

But her paws moved, sweeping aside curled leaves and brittle reeds, until she uncovered it.

A package of brown paper that warbled as she unravelled the ends, revealing the hidden treasure within. And her nose hadn’t lied. Sweet, crunchy fragments fell into her open paws, scraps of a nutty treat even the squirrels would be jealous of. That and… something else. A rare hint of spring greens in a landscape of rust and gold. (+1FP scraps, +1 fennel)

saltwater and secrets were laced in the waters beyond, brimming with the sweetest of colors as the morning star wandered upon valleys of periwinkle and weeping blues. the empty canvas of the morning above was upon each wavering curve of the sea, clothing the tides with plumy, ashen silks and faint ribbons of daylight. a mere reflection… but something so ravishing all the same.

and beneath plumes of ashen silks and faint ribbons of daylight balanced upon a periwinkle mirror, souls carved in the frame of twin silver blades frolicked underneath the veneer of the seas, beckoning bloomberry close.

upon shores of stardust and fallen wishes as her footsteps blossomed into a dawdling tango, a glass bottle enraptured by the monsters of the morning had been broken, its treasures seeping into the seas before it was welcomed into bloomberry’s embrace.

“you two done bickering?” a light-hearted chide against bloomberry’s lips, she shook her head ever-so slightly. “come along now. we should head to a different spot on the shore.” a pause. “there is no more prey since i’ve scared them from my latest catc-”

it was only then when the bliss of periwinkle seas was silhouetted by sienna feathers and reality went quiet once more.

Swiftlake puffed out her fur, immediately noticing the presence of the predator. Swiftlake took a step forward and kept her eyes on the bird, it's shadow so large it almost completely covered the big, fluffy silver tabby she-cat. "Bloomberry- stand to my left and Rapidstream stick where you're at." Three three she-cats stood side by side, Rapidstream so close to Swiftlake their neck ruffs and shoulder fur brushed. "Stay close." She whispered, although only Rapidstream heard her, Bloomberry too busy trying to control her fast-beating heart. "We'll fight it. Bristle your fur, bare your fangs, and look tough. Pretend if you have to." Rapidstream smirked and unsheathed her claws. "Oh don't worry, there's no need to pretend." Bloomberry let out her fiercest growl and unsheathed her claws as well. Swiftlake stood, battle ready alongside her new clanmates, feeling and small sweep of pride as she faced off the swooping bird of prey.

hmph… some things the medicine cat would never understand.

the auburn kiss of a fiery vexation was still fierce in his as he wandered the moor. autumn had fallen over each softly lit nuance of the plateau, staining the verdant shades of summer with petals of vermillion and terracotta.

as if little turtledoves had delivered love letters across the moor, little flowers freckled the terracotta and vermillion hues of autumn. a love letter from the stars to him.

“its a fish! i’ve never seen anything quite like it.” as if lost in an eternal dream, the musings of the starry-eyed stranger had flooded the atmosphere of the moor. “these kind cats gave me one! you could ask for one if you want… i’m sure they’ll offer one to you too!”

“The rocks? Well… I suppose we can. We have the time too. It won’t put us too far behind the second group wherever they might be at.”

Off a little bit back on their path they go. It wasn’t too far away so thankfully the group grabbed the fish and went. Maybe in a bit they could eat them as a little meal… or right now… one of the fish at least… and maybe a little something else sounded just right. Once more the group sat down to eat and rest. Dragonfruit was a little annoyed but that’s okay. It was better to have a happy patrol than one that was grumpy. The pink cat sighed as he nommed on some of the grow before huffing in annoyance upon seeing his mate just snatch it and roll away. Hollyheart giggled and began to eat happily. The other cat could only simple shake his head and rest. They had so many thoughts in their mind. He was mostly worried for the kits. Oh those three were a pawfull. It hasn’t even been a day but yet he missed them so much. Least his mate was here but those poor little babies. They must miss them so much. Dragonfruit simply huffed and turned his gaze to his eldest son. Well… he had one baby here with them but… said baby wasn’t exactly keen on them. Firestrike was tussling once more with Piketail. They were tugging at half of the trout almost playing with it. When the ruddy tom noticed his father watching, he almost winced and immediately dropped the act almost afraid of a scolding but… it never came. Dragonfruit simple looked away again not even saying anything about the kit like behavior. It stunned the ruddy tom to say the least. He was… perplexed by the behavior his father just showed. He saw that correctly right? Dragonfruit didn’t even say anything? Firestrike just shook his head and went back to playing with Piketail since he assumed this was fine.

The other three simply talked about their little ones and even discussed a little playdate when they all returned. Bullheart even mentioned if his other kit who was living elsewhere. Perhaps he could bring his son over for the little meeting. It was a long story about how Bullheart meet this other cat… maybe one for another day. Besides they should get going again. The younger cats had finished their meal and their play so might as well get going and catch up. The five arrived at one of their first obstacles, a log bridge that had quite the distance down between foothills. Some paw marks already on the bark indicated the second group made it past here already. Dragonfruit took the lead and one at a time the five crossed. Hollyheart was next with just as must ease. Piketail almost slipped but managed to catch himself on a branch. Bullheart also easily made it over. Firestrike began to make his way over. He had just the confidence the other had but he slipped and barely caught himself. Claws stuck on the edge of the log. He tried to scramble up but was unsuccessful!

“Hey! Are you just going to stand there?! Dad help!” He cried. The ruddy tom kept trying to climb but he kept sliding further off the log. “Get up boy! Come on just climb u-“ Dragonfruit snapped but stopped when he was interrupted.

“Oh you dumb ol’ fool! Just help the poor boy!” Hollyheart snorted and went to race back into the log. They didn’t know how much weight the log could hold. Hollyheart didn’t even realize the fact until hearing the log begin to snap. Quickly she grabbed and dragged the ton by his neck and made it over before anything else could happen. She huffed and began to lick the scared tom’s fur helping him to relax. Piketail also went to help. “Mom… thanks. I’m sorry I didn’t mean to not look where I was going.” Firestrike mumbled and nuzzled into the she cat’s fur. “You’re alright kid. It’s okay. You’re safe now.” And she slowly turned to face her mate with a scowl. “He still called for you after all these moons and you just watched.”

Guess Dragonfruit was sleeping outside the makeshift den tonight.

Night fell after a few more hours of unexciting events. The five prepared their nests… well a certain somebody had their outside tonight. The other four hid inside an abandoned den and all cuddled close. Piketail on his back, Bullheart on the side, and Hollyheart in the middle with Firestrike wrapped in her tail as if he was a baby. Dragonfruit just watched from the outside and rolled his eyes. Oh come on that boy has to learn one day his behavior would get him into serious trouble. What if one day he suddenly fell and no one was there? The dragon cat just shook their head and laid down. Well there was an upside to being out here, they could watch the area for any predators. The downside to that, they’d be the first to go if anything huge attacked the group. It was going to be a long night.
