hazel use to spend a lot of nights sitting out under the tall pine trees, walking along the rickety and weather worn wooden fence line. the only thing that clearly separated the open wilderness from the quaint and quiet farm, night was the most peaceful for the area.

the young cat could hear his clowder purring and speaking with with each other in soft mews, warm orange light from the old lady’s candles kept them warm, their shadows silently echoing their joy. hazel smiled softly and turned their attention back towards the fence line. the shadows from the tall pine trees seemed toe stretch like long fingers toward the cat. this sudden change in atmosphere took them aback, they felt their fur stand on end as they stared stiff into the void. something was there, watching him. glowing blue eyes flickered from the tree line, low to the ground at first then the orbs began to rise up steadily and with purpose. as if hazel had just seen a squirrel climb a tree — these were the eyes of a hunter.

the cat was about to let out a caterwaul too warn the rest of the clowder but the clouds played tricks against hazel’s eyes. the white masses moved away from the full moon allowing it’s bright blue light to pour down and illuminate the dense brush onto which hazel was transfixed. a large bush with gnarled tree roots and thorn branches resembled that of an oversized bear or wolf, hazel’s fur began to settle against their neck once more — an audible sigh was heaved from the cat’s chest. though just as a small purr of amusement began to build in his throat he glanced back at the weirdly figured brush and noticed huge claw marks along the trees next to it. his heart dropped to his stomach as his tail curled between his legs and he quickly hustled back to the shed. just as hazel’s frame disappeared into the warm glow of the shed — two blue faeries tumbled out of the tree line, giggling and tinkling to themselves for giving the young cat a fright.
