It all started during a chaotic moment when Mumble feared for their life... they don't like to talk about it. Then it became a habit, and now they are known as Mm because they are always out of breath, and ‘Mm’ is the most they can manage while surviving dancing.

Kelris wakes to the usual morning inventory: left-front hurts, right-middle is stiff, back-left grinds when she bends it. She tests the others. Seven out of ten legs are functional. Good enough.

She’s long past counting days since a pain-free morning. There haven’t been any.

The other Skybound waitresses move easily through breakfast prep when she arrives, four legs each, effortless. They walk the way she vaguely remembers walking: without thinking. Kelris thinks about every step.

She distributes her weight automatically: the three worst legs get minimal load, the seven functional ones compensate. It’s a constant quiet math her body does now. Which limbs can bear weight. Which joints might buckle. How to move without limping, because limping draws attention and attention draws conversation.

“Table six needs—” the shift lead starts.

“Already heading there.” Kelris lifts three trays with three separate legs and moves before the end of the lead's sentence. The extra limbs make her efficient; they also make the pain everywhere, all the time.

Someone at table six stares. They always stare.

“Ten legs,” the Fable says. “That’s… does it hurt?”

“Only when I’m awake,” Kelris replies, setting down the plates.

“No, seriously—”

“Seriously only when I’m awake.” She’s gone before the stranger can follow up.

By midday, left-front has downgraded from “hurt” to “barely functional”. Six good legs. Still workable. She’s handled full shifts on five.


She’s serving table three when a small child, four-legged, maybe five years old, crawls under her to grab a dropped toy. Instinct makes her freeze. Any shift of weight could crush a limb that small.

The foal looks up at her from under her body. “You have so many legs,” she says, delighted rather than afraid. “Do they all have names?”

“No,” Kelris says. It comes out sharper than intended.

The child’s mother rushes in, pulling her away. “I’m so sorry, she doesn’t understand—”

“It’s fine,” Kelris says. It isn’t, not really. Her heart is pounding from the sudden need for total stillness, from the brief terror of miscalculating her shifting weight. She pushes through it and keeps moving.


Late afternoon brings a dropped tray, a rarity. Right-middle seizes without warning, and the soup hits the floor in a messy explosion. Every gaze swings toward her.

“You okay?” a server asks.

“Fine.” She kneels to clean, bracing with four legs while the seized one hangs half-useless. The pain radiates in hard, bright pulses. She ignores it.

“You should take a break—”

“I said I’m fine.”

The server retreats. They always do.

By evening, she’s down to five reliable legs. The shift lead notices at last.

“You’re limping.”

“Am I?” She keeps walking. Table nine needs refills.

“Kelris.”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re clearly not—”

“I. Said. I’m fine.” She meets the shift lead’s gaze until the other Fable looks away.


During dinner rush, she gets her first client complaint in a while.

A Fable at table twelve wrinkles her nose. “My stew’s lukewarm.”

Kelris tests the bowl with her tail tip. It’s hot.

“It’s within serving temperature,” she says.

“I’d like a hotter one.”

Kelris feels every aching joint. The thought of carrying another tray, of navigating the narrow aisles again with only five cooperative legs, is suddenly exhausting in a way she rarely allows herself to feel.

But she picks up the bowl anyway.

As she turns, the guest mutters, too softly for anyone else to hear, but Kelris hears it perfectly:

“Ten legs and still useless.”

Kelris stops. Just half a breath. Just long enough to feel the sting. She doesn’t reply. She can’t, not without something sharp slipping out. Instead, she brings the stew back to the kitchen. Slowly. Carefully. With every step a controlled negotiation between pain and balance.


The shift finally ends.

The other waitresses leave in a flurry of chatter and social plans. Kelris stays. She lowers herself to the ground in the empty dining room. Ten legs sprawl awkwardly around her, like the shadow of something she barely remembers being proud of.

She stays like that for twenty minutes. Eventually, she forces herself up. Tests each leg. Four have recovered enough to function. Six still throb. She’ll sleep poorly, as always.

A forgotten shawl sits at table six. She picks it up with a trembling leg, carries it to the lost-and-found with three others that protest, and locks up with shaking legs.

Outside, another Skybound passes. “Long shift?”

“Just another day,” Kelris says.

The passerby nods sympathetically, the kind meant for someone tired after serving on four legs. Kelris doesn’t bother correcting her.

Because ten legs don’t just multiply the work. They multiply the pain. And the compensation for one bad joint spreads through three others, a chain reaction that never ends.

She walks home on whatever combination of legs still agree to move her forward, quietly recalculating with every step. The night breeze cools her burning joints.

She tells herself it’s worth it. That being the best waitress in the Skybound matters. That efficiency is its own kind of pride.

But when she reaches her quarters and finally collapses, ten legs folding in on themselves like tired scaffolding, Kelris admits, privately, in the dark:

She’s not sure the trade-off is fair. She just knows she doesn’t get a choice.

And morning will come, and she’ll take inventory again. And whatever number she gets, she’ll call it “good enough.”

Memory: "The Fondest memory you ask? Why...I would have to say it was the first snowfall I ever witnessed.

I wasn't more than nine months old my first winter. We could always tell when it was coming. The air turned from warm to bitter cold at night. Then the frosts came, which confused my tender mind that first year. How the dew would freeze on every blade of grass and the entire world seemed to shimmer in the low morning light as it broke over the horizon.

One particularly cold night, the herd moved into the trees nearest the valley and we all bedded down there. It was warmer, the trees working as a shield against the bitter winds that washed over us all, cooling you to your bones and causing you to nestle closer to one another just to sooth the slight ache it caused. But that night was different, something smelled more...fresh on the mountain air. Like a cleanse was coming, but at my age I thought little of it and drifted off to sleep beside my mother.

When I awoke the next morning, I felt something cold land on my nose, the air so cold I couldn't help but sneeze, before my eyes fluttered open and a whole new world lay out before me. The field I knew was not blanketed in white, the trees heavy with their new and growing burden, and the sun shimmered across the surface like a million tiny diamonds. It was beautiful, yet cold and unforgiving, but I couldn't help but be striken by awe at the sight. I knew nothing of the danger snow can put forth, and I do miss the days of being so naive.

I spent the entire day testing my speed in the deep and cold newfound friend, the other Foals and I rolling and romping in it. True youthful activities, things I envy to see now, because I am now burdened with what the adults of that time were burdened with. I will always look upon that memory with a smile, and that will never change."
