Critters waking from their season-long naps, insects finally venturing out to search for food, even the pollen of flowers drifting through the breeze in search of somewhere new to grow. Juniper knew winter was necessary, and she didn't despise it for its cruelty, but she never admired it as much as she did spring. She loved watching what survived the cold and what managed to bloom despite it.

The moon rises high and full over the dusty swath of rolling mist and twirling vine. The creatures of the night sing their song like lullabies to the stars above. Mangroves stretch their limbs above the muck in praise while willows swoop low to kiss the dust. Dry branches reach like grim hands into the void, as if begging pardon for lost souls. Amidst it all, a shadow wanders. Graceful and filled with a quiet confidence that dances on the dews of the fog rather than through it.

A soft, hissing voice rides on the wind, as if whispered from the shadows of the swamp itself. “Nearly there, dear one… Only a few miles more for what we seek…”

“What I seek.” The other vehemently corrects.

Evelyn.

Or, to those who whisper it throughout the wilds, the Haunted One. A curious being which roams the earth like shifting winds, ceaseless in their hunt yet careful in their footsteps. Part physical and part… metaphysical.

Upon the left shoulder lies Eve, the Light Mist. As the seeing one, the tangible one, Eve is often more connected to the present. Through Eve, their limbs are given strength to walk and their minds the will to do it. Through Eve, they are provided connection to earth and bone alike. The one tether they have left to reality.

Lyn, on the other hand, is a seeker. The head upon the right shoulder. The Heavy Mist. Possessing the ability to sense the arcane, divine the future, and commune with the occult. Through Lyn, they not only have the power to seek the abandoned souls of the world, but to contain them. Absorbing withering wisps as ethereal fuel… and losing a little bit more of themselves every time they do.

Forever sewn together, and yet undeniably separate in nature. Too entwined to be enemies. Too detached to be friends. Some twisted amalgamation in-between, where duty meets inevitability. Companionship, built by necessity. Some might call it ‘trauma-bonding’.

To Evelyn, it is simply… life.

“Yes… what you seek…” The shadowed head dips low almost as if in apology. In truth, ze is scenting the earth. Seeing beyond sight. Following the leylines of the arcane beneath zir feet, and gently tugging the string to see it shifting in the blind void. “This way… This way…”

Eve bites back another bark as she chases the shallow pull that can be felt from their collective soul. The pull that Lyn provides, but Eve can only trust.

After thousands of years of existence, not even Evelyn themself remembers who came first. The mother, or the womb? The seeker or the saint? Although it hardly matters anymore where the line used to be. Not when there are greater purposes to serve– purposes which the old gods have appointed them. No matter how strained the relationship may be, Eve can’t deny that Lyn makes her duties much easier to fulfill.

A drip. Then another. The Heavy Mist somberly raises their head to turn their blank expression to the darkness, thick and heavy tears staining the fur of her cheeks and littering the forest floor. “There. Do you sense them, dear one? Do you see?”

The Light Mist follows their sightless gaze. “I do.”

Embers of life are difficult to follow but undeniable once in sight. The cool blue light of a soul lingers upon everything it touches. The fog seemingly forms along the formless to reveal the vestiges of what once was. An arm adorned with an old heirloom, a head of prickling fur, perhaps a wistful memory of a tail. The wisp doesn’t run– it hardly has the presence of mind to do so- but woeful eyes look up to meet The Haunted One with a sorrowful moan.

“Hail Spirit. This suffering shall be your last..” Eve declares. Not with compassion nor malice, but finality. The fate of the wisp matters not to her, except to please the gods and make herself all the stronger.

“Be quick with this one,” Lyn warns, hushed, as more tears drip like sanctified oil. “They mourn. They fear. They writhe."

Eve growls in annoyance and drops low, a predator now on the hunt. “Enough poetry already...!”

Then– leaps!

She first crashes into the brush, teeth snapping over nothing, as the poe dematerializes on the wind. Undeterred, The Light Mist thrashes then dives as the soul flits between fangs on instinct. A chaotic, practiced dance of malice and memory under the moonlight.

All the while, The Heavy Mist swings with every strike with an otherworldly grace. Wet eyes looking into the middle distance as if tracing invisible lines. “The webs weave too loose… Turn sharper. Strike harder.”

“I’m trying! I’m trying!” Eve snarls.

Another dive, another claw, another pivot.

Until finally–

“Now!” The Light Mist barks.

And The Heavy Mist obeys, snapping zir maw onto the nearest leyline and pulling. The strings throughout the swamp turn taut. At its epicenter the soul is caught like a shuddering breath. It squirms– then screams.

The tears fall faster, heavier.

Eve shows mercy to both by drawing by the final blow. Consuming the poe in a single, crushing bite, and casting the woods into silence once more. There’s a hum in their chest, a ghostly light following the soul down the neck and into the lungs. One final mourning screech reverberating through their bones with a shiver.

Lyn is the first to break the reverent silence, reserved in their sorrow but by no means restrained. “I sensed kindness in this one… Her voice still twinkles like silver bells in the wind.”

The comment makes Eve’s fur bristle even more. “Enough.” Her tail flicks with vitriol, leaving a trail of smoke as she turns away from the empty battleground with a furrowed brow. Then, as if trying to convince herself, “It matters no longer… The deed is done.”

“The next soul.” The Light Mist commands.

But The Heavy Mist doesn’t respond, eyes still haunted and flowing with lamentation. To which Eve sighs… then takes a breath, easing the tension of their shoulders. She raises a feathered wing to gently brush the tears from her companion’s eyes. Lyn doesn’t flinch, doesn’t crash back into reality, but slowly flutters back to the present like a wayward moth drawn to flame. Until ze turns to zir counterpart with a quiet, wary smile. Gratitude evident, but unspoken.

The silence settles, but now with a sense of peace in the air that feels like closure. Then, slowly, one paw at a time...

... Evelyn begins her hunt once again.

Chronos's outlook on life....is fairly dull. Lets back up a bit; From the time he was a foal, he was always behind the curve in regards to other zebras his own age. His own mother couldn't really be bothered to stand at his pace, the poor bloke always straggling at the end of the herd. When he was taken away to be raised in a zoological facility, everyone else were able to escape the hands of the two legged creatures capturing them.....but he remained, too slow to escape and sluggish to fight back. He really was never meant for the wild.... and now here he was, stuck in an exibit being gawked at like a prized peacock. So why would he have a better outlook at life? yeah, you could argue that by being in a facility such as this he technically escaped death. Zebras are supposed to be quick to escape danger, had he stayed with his herd...would he still be alive? or be taken by a preditor in front of everyone else. Here he was safe, he never had to worry about water or food....but if bordum could kill, that would be his greatest enemy. So with every day being the same. The routines never changing and no fear of danger. All he has left is the ever encompassing and knawing dread of dull boredum that effects his life and keeps him docile from sunrise to sunset.

The first action of the day usually takes Harlequin the longest; getting out of bed. By the time he makes it to his feet, he's already debating on laying back down.

The reason? Every day feels the same. It's monotonous on the best of days.

This contributes to why Harlequin's mane always looks messy, 'cause he just rolled out of bed.

The next activity that takes Harlequin the longest is finishing a task once the excitement wears off.

He'll start something when the idea strikes but as he's working, the motivation just crumbles little by little, his movements slowing until he just decides to give up and go back to bed.

This cat just needs one small coat adjustment for approval: The white on the tail is very stripe-like and not attached to any normal points white spotting might start from. You're welcome to either adjust it to a more standard appearance (attached to the tail tip and not quite so similar to the stripes' appearance should help; you can check out our basic guidelines here) or remove it - whatever you vibe with 🫡
