Cat Name: “Jack” || (Also called Jack-o-lantern, Jackal, and Jack Black.)
Cat Gender:Tom
Prompt:
Since Jack isn’t yet part of the _______ clan, there was a tradition in his old clan that he and his mother participated in.
Every Halloween eve, he and his mother would leave camp and venture deeper into the dark forest. It took a while for them to find, but there was a small clearing of trees.
The two would collect bunches of perfectly orange leaves, no green or red allowed. They would spread the leaves out on the forest floor.
They worked for hours, making sure each leaf was secured into the dirt below. When they were finished with the leaf portion, they began working on the glowing portion.
“So how are we going to make it glow this year mother?” Jack asks. His mother Caroline smiles at him.
“Fireflies.” She says, grinning as Jack lights up.
Jack has always loved fireflies. He thought they were so fascinating because he could never understand how such a small creature could hold such great power.
“Why can’t we glow?” Younger Jack often asked, and still asks to this day. This question always made his mother laugh.
“You're already glowing my little Jackal!” She would say each time he asked.
Jack and his mother shared a bond that no other cat in their clan could relate to. Jack vowed to never separate from his mother.
That would no longer be true.
There was an accident during a hunting trip while Jack was helping around the camp. A fellow clan cat stepped into a hunters trap.
Bloodhounds began to bark, the barking getting louder and louder as they were quickly approaching.
Caroline made a split second decision and she climbed up the tree, carefully jumping onto the now hanging trap.
The clan cat yowled, pain radiating throughout his paw. Caroline struggled, but just in time the trap snapped open, allowing the cat to flee.
Caroline tried to run too, but it was too late. The hounds snatched her. She was gone.
Jack was excited when the hunting party came back. It was Halloween eve! All that excitement shifted to worry in a split second.
“Tiger?” Jack rushed to his injured clanmates side, giving him the support he needed. Tiger groaned, leaning against Jack.
Jack rushed Tiger to the healers, then ran back out.
“Mom?” He said, heading back over to the remaining hunters. Blaze gives him a sorry look and shakes his head.
Jack is stunned, hurt, in denial.
“I’m sorry Jack.” A female clanmate says, but Jack’s not listening. He runs off to the clearing, tears welling up in his eyes.
He collects the leaves, imagining his mother by his side. He chatted with her, laughed, smiled, and joked. They built the base. Then he asked…
“So how are we going to make it glow this year mother?”
Fireflies! He thought. He could hear his mothers laughter echoing inside his head.
It wasn’t real. He snapped out of it. His mother wasn’t here...
This was the Halloween of 2025, and his mom had passed away exactly 2 years ago when he was just a kit.
She was only in his head.
