SPINNING AROUND DANCING WILDLY !!!!! this guy is absolutely stunning and i adore how he came out <3 tysm for making my dream come true !!
[ 1,213 words ]
mēnē was born on the brightest night. it has been said that he was formed by selene, the goddess of the moon, with constellations and night sky clouds. he has only ever known the cold embrace of night, and would have it no other way. he is known as the chronophylakas (time keeper), and has been charged by his mother with the responsibility of keeping the moon cycle flowing smoothly, to allow the lunar months to be aligned with the Prophecy.
as a demi-god, he was raised by the olympians, and fiercely told to never interact with mortal fables. his interest had always been piqued, but he listened - for thousands of years, he did his duty, raising the moon each night and setting it each morning, with a sort of blind cadence that numbed the edges of his being. one quiet night, though, a lavender-colored princess turned his entire world upside down.

a full moon beat down on mēnē's back as he soared through the clear air. he could faintly sense the mist that poured from his eyes in the fringes of his vision, but he had gotten used to the odd sensation of vapor tears. his eyes scanned the endless treetops as he meaninglessly searched - for what, he knew not. for the past lunar month, he felt an imminent need to find something. he knew it's smell: flowers, with a hint of soft, wet dirt. it replayed through his olfactory senses every night, consuming his every thought.
suddenly, he halted mid-flight. the roaring of blood in his ears drowned out his other senses as his veins alit with a passion so deep, so fierce, it almost swept him away in the subtle breeze.
flowers, with a hint of soft, wet dirt.
his wings flattened against his back as he nose-dived into the thick brush; his breath rattled like a ripped drum as his thrashed through the branches and found his way to the forest floor beneath him. eyes ablaze with a new fire, his gaze danced around the open clearing. then he saw her: a small, frail lavender-colored fable emerged from the treeline. she looked nervous, timid, as she made her way into the open clearing and towards a row of odd-colored bushes in the center.
confusion blossomed in his chest as his eyes followed the mortal fable. was she the reason his thoughts were consumed moon-up to moon-down? before he could linger too long on the thought, she knelt down in front of the bushes and disappeared from his view momentarily. she resurfaced with a peculiar looking plant inbetween her teeth. mēnē found a soft smile on his face as he watched hers light up with delight. the young fable pulled a satchel off of her shoulder and gently placed the glowing plant inside. the demi-god took a step forward, causing a twig to snap directly underneath him. fear zapped through the young she-fable's features as her head snapped in his direction. in the blink of an eye, he had dissipated into the shadows. he watched with shaded vision as she hurriedly threw the bag back over her shoulder, and trudged through the forest. he made sure that no creature of the night followed her home, and brought a gust of warm air to follow her steps so the cold bite of night wouldn't reach her.

the fable that glittered like starlight incarnate began following the patterns of the young princess, as he believed he had finally found the root of his craving. the desire to protect her very essence of her being carved an unnatural hole within his heart. like clockwork, every night at precisely eleven p.m., he would watch from a misted shadow as she braved the big, dark woods. howls of beasts in the night would quiet as he shadowed her every step; mēnē commanded everything that the moon touched, so he allowed nothing to get even within a breadth of her. he would watch with bated breath as she would pull out her botanical map, each night a new adventure for finding ever-growing magical plants within the forest.
one night, as they were walking, mēnē sensed that something was off in the way the unnamed princess stepped. he could hear her breath come in quick, quiet gasps. her eyes frantically searched the silent woods, fear outlining her every feature. the demi-god was confused - he made sure, as he always did, that she walked in the comfort of warm, soft winds. he moved misshapen rocks from her path, as well as any tree branch that threatened to block her path. he always tended to the atmosphere around the young fable, as he never wanted her to take a step in fear of the night.
he watched as she suddenly halted, swinging around in his direction. he immediately shied away, taking several steps away from her piercing gaze. it felt as though she was staring directly through him.
"who's there?" came the question he dreaded the most; it rolled off her tongue with an essence of sweet honey. he could almost taste the terror within her words.
he met her question with silence. it quickly became deafening.
"i know that some-fable is out there," she continued quietly, her eyes never once leaving where mēnē stood. although he knew she couldn't see him, it felt as though she had eyes that could see what most cannot. "i... i feel you. every night."
before he could harness the feelings raging within his soul, he felt it. slowly, he let his walls down and allowed her to see him. the lavender fable's eyes grew wide as he stood before her fully, now. they stood in silence, eyes never once leaving each other's. the entire forest held it's breath as it, mēnē included, waited for her reaction.
her head cocked to the side as she took in his ghastly appearence. he couldn't find words to say. it felt as though generations passed as he waited for her to do anything - run, charge, cry, anything. instead, a broad smile broke across her face as her features began to soften. the fear left her gaze as she took a step forward.
"i knew it!" she exclaimed breathlessly, like a young child in a candy shop. "i knew you were real! oh my gosh, hofnarr is going to keel over and die when i prove him wrong!"
before he could stop himself, a smile found it's way to mēnē's face. her energy and light were intoxicating.
"i'm iolanthe. what's your name?"
her question was so, so simple. but they were words that had never been asked to the demi-god. it took him a moment to gather his bearings.
"mēnē," he replied, flicking the vapor out of his eyes. "it's... nice to formally meet you."

mēnē didn't feel an attraction to the young mortal fable, but moreso a deeply-rooted feeling of protectiveness. he felt as though possibly, in some other lifetime, that they had been related - the shadows whispered a name he no longer knew, the breeze chided with secrets selene never meant for the demi-god to know. the lavender-colored princess was a missing piece of a chess match that mēnē never knew he was playing, and had been destined to lose.
