Phaedra
Do not weep at waters' edge,
Lest from depths you unwitting, dredge
Flowers of unearthly perfume
Gentle eyes that seal your doom
Beware beware the sylvan steed
On your sorrows she will feed.

Phaedra was made with purpose. She inhabits a pool of water known as "The Well of Sorrows". It was once a place where ancient elves came to cry away their pain, and slowly the salty water was enough to fill a basin, then a pond, and now it fills a small lake. The fae discovered the pool and uncovered its purpose, or so they believed. Strange flowers bloom on it's surface, and legend says that the smell of the flowers draws those with heavy hearts toward the waters. The temple that encloses the lake is locally known as Catharsis. Once, it was a place of contemplation and release.

Phaedra was strictly forbidden from touching the waters. She was a companion fable, supposed to provide comfort to visitors. For ages she provided a listening ear to those who suffered, she heard uncountable secrets and unfathomable griefs. For hundreds of years she shouldered tragedy after tragedy, with no relief. Those who visited the Temple forgot most of their time spent at it. It was painful to spend so long with people, to come to care for them, only for them to leave her behind and forget her. She wanted to forget too. She wanted freedom from her sadness, from their sadness.

Phaedra sought out the well, stood on its edge, and tried to shed her tears into it. But she had no tears to offer, she was unable to cry. Frustration overtook her, she was tired of being forced to take on so much negativity. She broke a cardinal rule. She stepped into the Well of Sorrows.

At first, she was overwhelmed. Ancient memories flooded her mind, memories that pre-date the fae, memories of the elves. Their emotions and memories were complicated, confusing. It overtook her, washing away at her soul. For years she slept in the depths of the lake. She slept through the fall of the fae and their inglorious retreat back to their homelands. She slept through the dawn of humanity, undisturbed, processing. When again Phaedra woke, she found herself altered, heavy with thousands of years of tragedy. She woke... hungry. Waiting.

The temple drew in humans eventually. they were not so canny to the workings of magic as the fae. The humans were, as all drawn to the temple are, deep in the throes of their grief. They came to the waters' edge, just as so many others had before them, and knelt on the steps leading into the lake.

In the past, it took many tears, many visits to the pool, and much rest before the memories of sorrow began to fade. Phaedra had no patience for that. She took it all, any memory tinged by sadness she pulled from them, and sent the humans on their way, lesser for it.

She is bound to the lake within the temple of Catharsis. The cloying smell of flowers might draw you in, but be wary. The person you are will not survive an encounter with she who dwells within the well of sorrows.
