kit's name: Kitt McGraw
How do they decorate their yard?
“Everyone here knows never to leave pumpkins out past 6:46 pm. When the sun sets, here she comes, the nimble-footed and raccoon-spirited Kitt McGraw, our seasonal produce poacher. She lives only 3 doors down, you think she would have some shame. Every year some new sorry sap of a neighbor moves in and goes to the pumpkin patch with their children collecting pumpkins, and gourds (oh she loves those, she may take those before sunset if she’s greedy) .”
“Those ignorant neighbors carve their pumpkins, remove their seeds and proceed to mutilate their pumpkins with grins and stuff and place a pitiful candle inside and with a smiling face place it outside right on the step. Ha! Suckers.”
“I can see Kitt now, skipping down the street in her tan trench coat, platform boots, and cashmere-lined leather gloves, she always examines her prize waiting on the step, inspecting it, pulling the ends of her gloves with the finesse of a surgeon. She weighs the poor pumpkin in her hand, blows out the candle, and tucks it under her arm. As if she would ever reject a pumpkin. She does this with every piece of produce on the poor neighbor's step and walks home like a professional.”
“Why does this keep happening?” The reporter asks
“Well sweetie,'' he says, lighting a cigarette. “Who is going to accuse their damn neighbor of stealing a piece of produce.”
“But you have seen it!” She retorts scooching to the edge of the velvet chair
“So? he replies with a smirk. "You should see that house of hers, now there's a masterpiece,” he says flicking the cigarette
“Now darling, it's a Victorian-style home, with intricately placed details and triangle-shaped windows, a wrap-around porch, completely jet black with tinted windows. The house itself is, by all means, peculiar with hundreds of glowing pumpkins that line the porch, the window sills, and the roof. Some carved, some uncarved. She keeps the gourds and smaller pumpkins near the edge of the yard in an organized pile that stretches across the yard with candles interlaced in every crevice, like a glowing wall. The grass is pristinely cut aside from the path dividing the yard filled with rows of jack-o-lanterns with unique faces and animalistic designs lining each level of the yard with their various features, some exquisitely carved and some carved as if a child did it. Some pumpkins are raised on bails of hay with figures inside the pumpkin glowing on the inside. Lights cover the trees but upon closer inspection, you will notice she strung up the small pumpkins filling them with a little fairy light. It is astonishing… her attention to detail…she is talented…undoubtedly…she knows what she wants…has a vision. I could never take a pumpkin back, she worships them so devoutly.”
I used to believe the pumpkin’s placement was a random pattern, however, if you get an aerial view you can see the face of a jack-o-lantern illuminating the night. Her dedication is admirable, and her talent…instinctual. The day after Halloween it’s gone, replaced by hundreds of pumpkin pies and seasonal bottled gourd curries left out with a sign saying “take many”. She is an enigma, a ghost I AIN'T ever seen her move a pumpkin in that yard, only take them from others and bring them home. Two lucky jack o 'lanterns decorate the first step leading to the path in her yard; she never carves them herself. It's always a child’s pumpkin; no doubt stolen , but you know the attention spans of adults. To them, it's just a pumpkin! But to a child, it's whimsical, a special surprise. I think she does it for them. Maybe she has some bit of a conscience. Some years she picks an uncarved pumpkin to stand watch over the others placing it at the tip of her roof. It watches over the whole yard in an old-school mask and a cape. That's how I know she must be a good guy because she has a sense of humor.
Heck, I’ll play along. I love that damn yard of hers and that curry is fantastic.
