Devere had lived by the sea for all his life, and in the mornings, he loved to wake up to the gulls calling and the waves crashing. But on a day when he was still young and naive...

He was swimming. He saw the flick of a fin, and when he turned, what did he see? Something he'd longed to see for his entire life, a whale.

Naturally, he swam out, trying to get a closer look. It wasn't until he could barely swim that he looked back, and then he realized how far he was from shore. Devere didn't know how he'd make it back, it was taking all his energy to stay afloat. Then he heard waves crashing, and got an idea. But he didn't succeed: a wave crashed over him instead of pushing him; it filled his eyes with seawater, and tumbled him every which way. He was banged on the seafloor -

Seafloor? Oh. He stood up shakily, and there he saw the wild waves of the ocean that had nearly drowned him, yet brought him back to shore alive. Was it possible to appreciate something, but fear it at the same time?
