Name: Crystal
Name Meaning(s): A crystal is a solid substance which naturally has a geometric form and symmetrical planes. The name Crystal is derived from the Ancient Greek krystallos, meaning "ice".
Gender: Female
Prompt:
Two weeks into her stay at the local animal shelter, Crystal gave birth to a litter of puppies. It had been expected that there would be six of them, and that's exactly how many there were. What wasn't expected is how diverse they were when they grew up a bit!
Two of them had big boxy heads, smooth fur, and ears that tipped forward. They appeared to be part pit bull or perhaps another mastiff type breed.
Two of them had short legs, long bodies, and no tails at all! Was it possible that they might be corgi mixes?
The final two appeared to be purebred Beaumont Collies, through and through. Their tails curved at precisely the right angle and their ears perked just so.
This was a curious sight to all of the staff on hand and because the look-alike pups also displayed similar colors and markings (which differed significantly from those of the pups in the other two groups) it was determined that there had been three different fathers for this litter.
The puppies were all found homes just as quickly as they were weaned, but poor mama was exhausted and lonely, crying at the kennel door for her offspring, who were with loving families by then.
One of the shelter workers began spending more time with Crystal and taking her for extra walks, giving her special training to make her housebroken and also teach her a few tricks that would make her more adoptable. The worker's name was Layla and as she was polyamorous, she had a special affinity for Crystal. She even gave Crystal her red and blue scarf, marked with a yellow infinity sign heart, because they were kindred spirits in that their sexuality was the same.
Both of them had more love in their hearts than they could give to one person alone, and they wanted to share that affection and closeness with special other individuals rather than limit themselves to loving only one person.
Crystal's snazzy scarf didn't find her a home as quickly as expected, and as the weeks passed the people coming through the shelter were mostly looking for smaller dogs, or fancy ones with longer fur, but Layla adored that special pup so much that she decided to adopt Crystal herself and the two have been inseparable ever since. Now Crystal is spoiled rotten by Layla and her paramours.

name: a shooting star | nova
name meaning(s): --
gender: male
prompt: on a winter night, juno was on her way home from a bookstore visit that ran later than she thought it would, trodding through the snow that littered the sidewalk. she had about fifteen minutes to go and it felt like the temperature was dropping by the minute. quickening her pace, she wrapped her scarf tighter around her shoulders and pulled her mittens tighter around her fingers.
a few minutes into her walk, she froze at the sound of a whine, her gaze cutting to the alleyway that she was about to pass. she inched closer, worried that it might be a stray dog and not sure if it was friendly or not. peeking around the building, she listened intently for the sound again.. another low whine.. whatever it was, it sounded hurt!
being careful not to spook it, she crept into the alley, her gaze roaming from either side of the two buildings before finding it's target. a little puppy! it was struggling to get under the dumpster, most likely to get away from the falling snow and under some protection from the weather.
disregarding the cold, juno fell to her knees in the snow and made small kissy noises towards the puppy, causing it to jump in fright before facing her. instantly the puppy's expression changed from fear to excitement as it rushed over, tripping over it's paws, it's tail wagging a mile a minute. she let out a laugh as she leaned further down, petting the puppy as it returned sloppy kisses anywhere it could reach.
once the puppy had calmed down, juno took her scarf off before wrapping the puppy in it and picking it up, cradling it close to her chest.
"you're coming home with me, my shooting star," she murmured quietly to it, pressing a kiss to it's forehead and rocking it gently up and down. how tired it must have been, for it had already fell asleep against her, safe at last..
--
to this day, nova wears his scarf with pride. he struts around the kennel like a peacock, showing it off to his kennel mates, and gets unhappy if anyone makes a move towards it. to him, the meaning behind it is much deeper than it seems -- it was the first time someone showed him love and affection, it is his one solace he cannot live without.

I loved all these entries, it was very hard to pick just one! Congrats!
