Courage of the CloudsPrompt:
Featuring: Tundra, Enokitake (Enoki), Aletheia (Thea)
“River, tell me one of your silly stories,” Tundra meows. The young cats were supposed to be looking for some herb, but Tundra was already bored.
River jumps onto a tree stump and opens up a worn book that she always carries with her. It looked suspiciously like a diary. “Once upon a time there was a she-cat who lived alone!”
“What’s her name? Why’d she not find someone to talk to?”
“Shh, I’m getting there. She was called Aletheia-“
“What happens next?”
“Tundra!” River exclaims, exasperated. How was she supposed to tell her the story if she was constantly interrupted?
“Okay, I’ll listen~” Tundra stretches and picks at the grass in anticipation.
“She was a plant storkie with fungal magic. She had a huge garden, and she would let strangers come see it, but they never stayed long. I think it was because she was being punished for something she did in her past life. That part isn’t really… clear.” River thinks to herself,
I’ll have to ask her again… someday.Tundra meows, “So she was real alone, then? That’s sad.”
“Yeah, but not for long. There was a day where this demigod cat came through. Auralee was really into love magic and stuff like that. She liked happily ever afters. She decided to help The-Aletheia out. She turned one of the mushrooms into a cat for Aletheia to have a friend.”
“Whattt? How does that work?”
“I don’t know. Auralee didn’t have the same Storkie magic. Anyway, they were both confused at first. Mushroom kitty wasn’t really sure what happened or what to do, but Aletheia helped him out. She taught him how to grow mushrooms and hunt and told him stories”
“What was his name?”
“She goes by Enoki- I mean, she called herself Enokitake. Sometimes she went by other mushroom names, though. Enoki and Aletheia went on many adventures. They made other friends, too. One time a frog made fun of Enoki’s hair and she felt bad so Thea made her a mushroom hat! And another time they created giant bouncy mushrooms and threw a party! They had glowing mushrooms to light the area when it got dark-“
“How did you know this story, anyway?” Tundra interrupts again.
“I… made it up,” River lies.
“I know they’re just characters but… they feel like family.” That was close enough to the truth. Who would believe that Enoki and Thea were once her friends when they didn’t remember her in this lifetime? Or that she herself used to be a river spirit, but Auralee’s magic accidentally turned her into a cat, too?
Tundra tilts her head. “What do you mean?”
River’s tail flicks. she feels a slight twinge of embarrassment. Other cats didn’t really get it, even the made up story. “It’s just, I knew them- I mean, they’re characters, I don’t know them, but I made them up, so I know all about them. I feel close to them.”
Tundra tilts her head, as if considering. “Okay. What happened to them?”
“They lived happily. They got old and… you know.” River shrugs, as if that’s the end of the story. It wasn’t. Enoki and Thea weren’t always reincarnated with the same looks, powers, or personalities, but they usually found each other in some way or other. Sometimes River got to know them again, and sometimes she was simply a bystander, crossing paths with them and writing down their tale.
((Did this story get unintentionally close to River Song’s backstory from DR WHO? Maybe LOL))
