Aleks padded up to the stand, a slight shake with each step they took. Feeling their heart pound within their ribs, their fear was visible to their defense attorney. The attorney let out a nod of assurance. Taking the podium, Aleks let out a little shake to tidy up their fur. The culprit stood before them, striking fear into Aleks, but not enough for them to back out. With a clearing of their throat, Aleks began to speak. From having a vandalized car to a whole assault, this prejudice has to end. Not only was it about them, but what about their fellow LGBTQ members? What if one day it was no longer just an assault, but a full-on murder? Aleks blinked at the thought, taking a second to recollect their thoughts. Now was not the time to go down a thought spiral. Aleks spoke as they were told to do so, sharing what they had witnessed and lived through, working with their lawyer to not be seen as guilty. The court was biased because Aleks defines themself as nonbinary. Though the case would have seemed an easy one, they didn't like the fact that Aleks was part of a community they thought went against natural law. Having to take a defense in this case, being called to court for the sole purpose of the "victim" not liking you for having a flag on your backpack. The situation made Aleks sick and anxious. After saying their parts, Aleks walked back to their original seat. The attorney got up and walked towards the front of the room, speaking with power and meaning. Her eyes lit up as she spoke, sharing just how unfair and unconstitutional it was to take a kid to court over something as petty as this. She shook her paws to emphasize her words, her hair moving with the rest of her body in a rhythm. Aleks watched, hopeful for his future. As they were ushered out of the room so the jurors could hold their briefing, Elizabeth, their attorney, looked at them with bright wide eyes, slightly watered from the pressure and fear. If she blinked, she may have cried. Normally if the time it takes is under forty minutes, the defendant will be found guilty. This is a rule of thumb that, though isn't always true, is often a bad sign. Only an hour passed before they were called back into the room, the jurors all straightening up their documents and murmuring to one another. Silence engulfed them once everyone had filed in. The gavel was pounded, Aleks was found guilty. The world collapsed within Aleks mind.
