What are Kuonlings? These lion-dogs are related to Foo Dogs, which are east asian legendary creatures that guard homes. This special variation of foo dogs are literally drawn-to-life by children (which is what that scroll holds) and become their guardian. They may stay with the child until they grow up and pass away, or a child may forget their dog as they grow older, and that dog roams the earth in search of a new friend.

Sam was a reserved, quiet child. He never went hungry or thirsty and he never had to worry about shelter from any element. In this, he was very blessed. However, there were things he lacked that he missed more than anything: companionship and care from his parents. He had no doubt his parents loved him, but they were a distant, cold and analytical pair who never expected to have such a sensitive child.
Sam was homeschooled by a neighbor who cared for two other children. The five-acre farm where he grew up, all he knew were the animals and those two children who were not quite his age. His teacher was old enough to be his grandmother and she was quite strict, having known a hard life herself. Sam would play or hang around the two children, but he never felt close to either of them. The pair were thick as thieves and did not take well to other kids who didn’t see things their way. So, Sam learned to be passive and play along.
