"Look, it's Splash!!"

"Keep your voice down, she'll hear you!"

"Do you think she'll look at me? Eeek!"

Splash flicked her ear, pretending not to notice the gossiping to-bes muttering about her. She was used to it. Not bothered, though. She reveled in it. She lovedthe attention. It was well deserved and she was incredibly proud of herself.

As so she let them whisper. Let them talk. Any every now and then, she'd glance over at them and wink. The excited squeals that erupted always brought her deep satisfaction. Her tribe admired her.

Splash wondered if generations from now her name would still be whispered among to-bes. Like a legend, a story for kits in the nursery. She secretly hoped so.

And sure, maybe she was a bit full of herself. But why not?

She'd taken an entire adult emu down on her to-be assessment, alone. That deserved all the praise she could get.

Cassandra wanted recognition; wanted approval for the role she was so good at. Being a Keeper in the world's weakest clan was interesting, to say the least. The clanmates were optimists and the leader was a do-gooder pacifist, so when you're good at fighting and guarding and sending your foes running with a permanent scar, you get less than the recognition you deserve. It's not like she wasn't known; her clanmates knew of her aptitude for sparring, as they put it, but she wanted more. She wanted to be appreciated for all she did for this clan, for being the only one within it willing to fight, to protect, to scar. When Amery had offered her into the group, even with Cassandra's reputation for being a fierce fighter, she'd been happy. She could put good use to her skills by fighting alongside her clanmates and protecting them from their enemies. But no, she had to be offered into the one group on the entire west side of the river who didn't fight. They just negotiated, enables, keeled over and let their foes walk all over them, however you want to put it. Cassandra was known for not backing down; remaining fierce and courageous in the face of conflict. Maybe she could teach Amery, too. Amery wasn't a fighter, but that didn't mean she couldn't be known for her will and strength, too. And besides. There was no one better to teach her than the clan's best keeper.

Looks can be deceiving.

To outsiders and newcomers, Mournsong appears to be a sweet, gentle cat. One who would never sully her paws with violence of any kind. She'd probably be a healer, or a permanent queen. A cat who offers a softly spoken word of advice to anyone who needs it, whose clanmates look up to her as a mother to the entire Clan.

And... well. Some of that was true. Mournsong is a gentle, loving cat, who never raises her voice above a comforting murmur, who is always willing to take an abandoned kit in. But within EndClan, she is well known for an entirely different reason.

There is, after all, a reason why her ritual name is Mourning Dove's Warning Song.

It is the Sentinels' duty to defend their Clan until their dying breath. And despite Mournsong's small stature and smaller voice, when her Clan is in danger, she transforms from a tiny innocent cat into a tornado of fur, claws extended, face twisted into an angry snarl. Anyone who questions whether such a small cat should be in such a dangerous role eats their words the first time they watch her leap into the air to pull a redtailed hawk out of the sky, or slices a fox across the face to defend a pair of kits.

It's not deception, not exactly. Mournsong genuinely prefers not to fight, prefers to gently nurture her Clan over fighting to defend it. But if she does play up the act slightly.... well. Who's to know?

After all, the weak are underestimated.
