Prompt: I'm a folklorist, so that's where my mind goes when seeing this prompt c: One of the weirdest creatures from my culture's folklore (in a broad sense) I can think of is the Nuckelavee! It's a demon from Orcadian mythology (the island of Orkney, off of Scotland) with a strong Scandinavian influence. It's one of the nastiest creatures in Scottish folklore. In appearance, it combines characteristics of a humanoid and an equine - similar to a centaur, it is said to have a man's torso attached to a horse's back as if riding the horse. Its long arms hand down to the ground, and its humanoid head is said to be ten times larger than that of a regular human. Its head has a single, large mouth that is as wide as a whale's and juts out like a pig's snout, and emits black, noxious fumes. Its singular giant eye burns with red flame. Its entire body is hairless and skinless, with thick black blood coursing through its veins. It has fin-like flaps on its equine legs. Its breath has been said to wilt crops and sicken livestock, and it was often blamed for disease and droughts. Though primarily a seadweller, the Nuckelavee would venture ashore to complete its sole purpose - to plague the people.
It is said that the Nuckelavee cannot tolerate freshwater, and as such would never come up on shore if it was raining. Inhabitants of Orkney were so terrified of it that they wouldn't say its name without uttering a prayer; they believed it to be a creature of the purest evil. The only being able to control it is the Mither o' the Sea, but that's another story.
A fun fact is that the burning of seaweed was said to anger the Nuckelavee - it would release a horrible, deadly plague upon the horses and livestock whenever seaweed was burned.

The Grumfasoot
Once believed to have been the last remnant of dragons, the grumfasoot (grum-fuh-soot) is an eight legged, eight eyed, eight fanged, eight winged beast. When first spotted the creature was believed to be eighty feet tall as well, but that report ended up being false, as the creature is often seen climbing in tall trees. The Grumfasoot is in fact eight feet tall.

The grumfasoot resides in two major habitats. The deciduous forest and on the sides of oceans in forested areas. The beast hunts in the dead of night using it's black and grey colors to its advantage. The camouflage of its wings keep the beast hidden in the shadows, only visible if light were to shine directly onto it. Surprisingly enough, this creature does not often prey on larger animals, but small ones like owls, mice, and rabbits.

Although only three specimen have been caught within the life span of Earth, it has been decided that the Grumfasoot is in the same genealogy that owls are.

Only two Grumfasoots have ever been caught, the only evidence science has to prove the existence of this creature. Both were male and lived two weeks in captivity. The creature is too wild to live for long while in a cage of any proximity.

Threats in terms of the Grumfasoot come in several forms. The Grumfasoot itself is a threat. Although the beast has never reportedly eaten a human, it is quite violent. The territory of this creature is large and it is very possessive of it, attacking larger beings that enter it. Although the beast is elusive and not many locations of its being is known, a bounty was sent for it in the summer months of June and July in the year 1942. The bounty was three dollars per Grumfasoot caught, but no one succeeded. Large groups of people would go to hunt down Grumfasoots, but would only come back with wounds and bruises. The hunting of Grumfasoots was then outlawed in three states due to its danger.

Today the grumfasoot has withdrawn more and more, to the point of people believing its extinction. However, each time that the beast is nearly declared extinct a new sighting occurs, never allowing the creature to fade into the background.
