Melody, despite her age, has never felt safe much of anywhere. She was a kittypet for many moons, but even that didn't feel secure; her Twolegs always seemed to have something better to do, or otherwise didn't care about her. Her last owner was actually cruel towards her, not just neglectful, which was what finally pushed her to abandon her kittypet life.

But, the life of a loner if far from safe, too. She could find a dry spot to rest - maybe even a warm spot, if she was lucky - but there was always fear that something would come and chase her away, be it a Twoleg, a dog, or even another cat. This combined with her former life made Melody a jumpy and paranoid cat, rarely staying in one place for long, always looking over her shoulder, and never letting anyone close. This would have driven her to her death, had it not been for Godiva.

Melody had fallen ill the day before Godiva found her, and this combined with her near-starvation spelled nothing good for her. She could barely move out of her nest. Godiva found her whilst on patrol for cats to join OleanderClan, and more or less dragged her back to camp to be treated by the medicine cat.

For the first time in her life, Melody felt calm, safe... sometimes. It took her a long time to realize it, but she felt safest at Godiva's side, regardless of where they were or what they faced.

She remembered when FallenStar took over the clan, the fighting and instability that took control of their patch of land. She remembered that through the chaos there was one place that remained safe for her, stable as anything and welcoming to her when she needed the comfort. It was in the cave system below the territory that she found that safety. Most would find the caves far too dangerous to be a comfort but the distant sound of water dripping that bounces around the tunnels and the present chill that takes away the aches of the heat of the sun are both lulling and often Mercy found herself slipping into a deep sleep in the caves, rest assured that no-one would find her and cause her harm while all hell broke loose on the surface.
She still visits the caves now, from time to time, but her need for a special safe place isn't as severe now that the fighting has finally stopped and she can live out her dream of looking after the young of the clan she can't have. [181]
