hound name: Persica
coloration: red urajiro with button ears
sex: Female
age: Five years, two months
collar color: White with little peaches on it
prompt:
Persica was awfully self conscientious about her ears when she was a pup. Her packmates often picked on her about it once they realised they weren't going to stand up. She was often upset thinking they had caused it, since everyone had always enjoyed grabbing her by the ears in play. Things changed when the owner's daughter came to visit from overseas and fell in *love* with her over her ears. Suddenly, a source of shame was a source of pride. She was the favourite, even if she wasn't the fastest, the flashiest, or the most powerful.
She went on to become the girl's personal dog and has come to love her floppy ears - even if they get in the way!

hound name: Playa
coloration: red urajiro with button ears
sex: female
age: 5 years
collar color: white with pastel green stripes
prompt:

The lovely Playa is part of a large litter, this Hound with sweet eyes was the last to be born and moreover the only female. During the growth she never had problems with her brothers, she loved to play with them and run along the expanses of grass and then return safely to their mother.
Being the only female, her loving mother has always had an eye for her.

Things started to change after a few months, her brothers, one after the other, started to be different from her, their ears had become straight and beautiful while hers were still those of a puppy.
Her mum told her not to worry, surely hers will become straight too.
Playa tried not to think about her ears but she felt more and more different, day after day and things did not seem to go better.

When she became an adult she started to move away from the others, at times it seemed to her that the other Hounds looked at her badly or still considered her a puppy.
So she spent the days alone, in the shade of a large tree while watching the others play.
But she liked to walk at night, when the stars high in the sky seemed to admire her without finding her strange. The fresh wind caressed her face and the wet grass of the previous day's rain had a particular scent.

She walked with her eyes to the stars, she did not even notice the puddle in front of her until she ended up with a paw right in the water. She looked at her reflection for a few moments illuminated by the moonlight and decided that she was no different, she was herself and she deserved to be treated like the others.

Things had to change and the next morning, to everyone's surprise, she got up from her bed under the tree and reached the other Hounds, they were surprised but happy at the same time.
She played all day with her new friends and everyone, even her, from that moment understood that Playa is not strange but she is unique and it is her uniqueness that makes her special.

hound name: Cider
coloration: red urajiro with button ears
sex: Female
age: 4 yrs, 11 months
collar color: black with dark gray hardware
prompt: (sad boi hours up ahead)

"My ears? I've never really been asked that before. I don't like to go to that time in my childhood, anyways. But since you've asked..."

"I was an only child, birthed to an extremely timid, sunset-colored female named Claire and an abusive gray male. I never bothered to learn my father's name. As I grew, I'd listen to my father argue with my mother over something I didn't think was very unusual at the time, my ears. My mom, being overly sensitive, cried when my dad yelled at her. He'd taunt her for it. I hated it oh so much.

He'd call me a defect, and ask Claire why she'd given birth to such a "monster", in his words. You wouldn't think it, but he liked things perfect.
I didn't think things would get any better. They fought everyday. I crawled under a crumpled box when it started, and the strange fact about it was that the mean gray dog never took anything out on me. Just my mother.
And then my father went too far.
I don't know how it happened, or what she said, for I was hiding under a box, crying my eyes out quietly.
What I do know is that I heard a strangled scream. I crawled out to see my mother dead. I won't go too into detail on what I saw, but right now lets just say that when that murderous gray dog saw me and growled, I ran so far and so fast that I didn't have any sense in my paws for days.

All of this because of my ears.

So when you ask me how I feel about my ears, I will always reply with,

I hate them. Or, for better words, I strongly dislike them. Very, very strongly. They caused the death of my mother. Extremely few dogs can say that their ears caused one of their parent's deaths, but let's just say that I'm not proud to be the one dog that can."

come on, let's be real. dogs don't care about appearance! you see a three-legged mutt bounding across the yard, mouth wide open in a joyous grin, tongue flopping out the side of their mouth, they don't know they're any different from any other dog. they're happy just the way they are!
a chihuahua stands his ground against a big ol' great dane, thinkin' he's the king of the world. and he could probably chase the great dane off, tail between their legs, if he played up the tough guy act enough. it's kinda endearing, truth be told, and even inspiring how canines just don't care.
dogs aren't like us. they're not superficial. they don't see imperfections; don't even know the meaning of the word. what's floppy ears gotta do with "good girl", "i love you, girl"?
jailbird can tug on the standard point ears of any other senegal hound just as they can tug on hers. she can express herself just as well as they can with them, too. so, what's the problem? silly ears, bright eyes, goofy drooling chops— she's not imperfect, and she's not perfect. jailbird is a dog, and she wouldn't have it any other way.
