The Lie: 200-500 words
Hupo was a foolish lioness, a direct result of her mother’s parenting. Being incredibly superstitious when she found out she was bearing cubs she immediately visited Mother Kilikina, a with doctor and herbalist.
Kilikina after many divinistion tests explained her findings to the expecting mother, her solemn face scaring Hupo. Kilikina explained how she would bear twins, and to be careful, the one that grew fangs (adult teeth) first held an evil soul. Hupo listened in terror of what that cub could become unchecked, a powerful and greedy monster before going off to prepare.
After giving birth to the two, Hupo loved them dearly and treated them equally. It concerned her that one was evil but they were so young now and she didn’t know which was which... she didn’t even name them yet.
However as soon as one outgrew it’s baby teeth and gained fangs she changed her parenting. The “evil” one she called Kualii and her “precious” one she called Kamalei. The two despite showing similar behaviors were treated differently and she all but shunned Kualii much to the cubs confusion. Any pride they traveled to she told of stories of how evil he was and as he grew up it seemed more believable as his piercing eyes unsettled many.
One day as an adolescent Kualii went up to Hupo to talk with her. She had refused to let him train with Kamalei and he wanted to know why. She told him everything then, how he was destined to be evil, how his soul festered and hungered. In fear, Kualii ran.
Worried about hurting his beloved brother or his pride he left. He didn’t feel evil. Did he? Each time he hunted he questioned if he did it for food or because some twisted part of him liked to hurt....
Kualii isolated himself and didn’t interact with another lion until the beginning of his adulthood. She was a lost lioness he helped in a storm with fur the color of a river fish.
It took much convincing and time for Kualii to realize he wasn’t inherently evil or cursed, that he could do good. With this new found ability to pave his own way he and the lioness decided to join a pride and reintegrate into a group environment. Kualii is not completely done with the strong feeling in his chest that he might hurt, or the sad feeling that destruction will befall them all but he is slowly learning. Each day he strives to be kinder, nicer, and more caring despite what he may believe.
