“You two ready?” The she-cat asked, looking at the apprentices.

“Yes!” Chorused Silverpaw and Shadepaw.

“Standard rules apply; first to pin their opponent wins, and most importantly, keep your claws sheathed.” Silverpaw noticed that though Shadepaw nodded, she discreetly rolled her eyes as Cloudfrost ended her spiel.

Cloudfrost continued, “You may begin.” With ferocious energy, Shadepaw jumped at Silverpaw, throwing him to the ground. In an instant, she was on him, batting his shoulder. He was startled by a pinprick of pain. Is she using claws? Shaking the thought, Silverpaw leapt towards Shadepaw. She hissed, and lashed out with a paw. Silverpaw felt a fiery pain in his ear and something warm and sticky trailing down his face. Blood! He thought, alarmed.

“Shadepaw!” Cloudfrost exclaimed, surging forward. “I told you no claws!”

“Sorry Cloudfrost,” mumbled Shadepaw, glaring at the ground. Cloudfrost turned to Silverpaw.

“Are you okay?” He nodded. “Let’s get you back to camp and patched up. But it looks like you’ll lose part of your ear.” Silverpaw grimaced.

Cloudfrost led the apprentices to camp, berating Shadepaw. When they reached camp, Cloudfrost told Silverpaw to go to the healer’s den and whisked Shadepaw away for punishment.

Later that night, Silverpaw encountered Shadepaw. Her manner was sullen, and her expression disgruntled.

“Cloudfrost said to tell you I’m sorry.” She mumbled, irritatedly. Silverpaw tilted his head.

“Are you sorry?” He asked. Shadepaw hunched her shoulders.

“I think sheathing our claws in training is a stupid rule.” She burst out.

“By using our claws there’s a risk of injury which makes us fight better.” She huffed. “I’m sorry for causing pain. But I’m not sorry for using my claws.” Shadepaw looked at Silverpaw, a grin on her face. “On the plus side, you have a very nice battle scar.”

It all started on a cold, breezy day, Thistleswoop, Thistlepaw at the time, training with his peers. He hadn’t meant to rip his ear, of course. Thistlepaw thought it sounded plain risky when his friend dared him to run through some brambles. He, however, not wanting to be seen as a coward, reluctantly ran through the brambles. It was normal in the overgrown forest to get you paw maybe stuck in some leaves or even trip over something, but you usually didn’t get any lasting scars. Thistleswoop, however, got his ear stuck in the brambles. He stood there, struggling for a bit less than an hour until his friends finally decided to worry about him and figure out why he was taking so long. He got out of the brambles soon enough, but he spent a lonely day in the medicine cat den, constantly hoping for a visitor. But sadly, nobody came, and by tomorrow his friends had forgotten about the whole incident, laughing it off and leaving Thistleswoop slightly embarrassed that he had gotten stuck in the brambles.
