The lion inched along the cliffside, trying to figure out a way down. He had just escaped an ambush of a rival pride, and ran. Why was he so stupid? Now he was stuck, lost, and his ego had been murdered. Not that he had much of one in the first place. His siblings were always putting him down, and because of that, he'd ended up with a low ranking. Forager! Who cared about plants? They're just green things.
In his sulking, the lion had slipped and started sliding down the cliffside, gaining speed. After he had stopped falling, he grumbled and stretched his sore body.
He looked around and growled at the nearest tree, swiping at it. He froze when something near him growled back, then many more. He flattened his ears as he looked around for the approaching enemy, but no one was there except for a couple of colorful birds. Were there ghosts? No, that's stupid. Right?
Suddenly paranoid, the lion started walking through the forest. But soon, he was bolting through the trees, wanting to get away from this haunted forest.
He saw sunlight shining to the left, and turned immediately, hope filling his paws and pushing him faster. A vine hidden on the forest floor unbalanced him, and he stumbled into the light, his eyes adjusting slowly. Too slowly.
A heavy force pounced on top of him, and a voice asked, "How in the stars did you get here?"
The lion growled and pushed the voice off. "I came down here on purpose!" he snapped, looking at the blue-gray lion in front of him. He was quite handsome for a lion, and had a small rabbit at his feet.
He giggled. "Okay, well you're here now. What's your name?"
The lion was baffled. No one had asked for his name. For all he knew, low ranks didn't get names. "I... I don't know." he mumbled.
"...Um, I'm Willow Stones!" the lion looked at him strangely before his stormy eyes lit up. "Do you want to join my pride?" he asked.
The lion looked around for other lions, but this Willow Stones seemed to be alone. "What pride?"
He frowned. "It's only me for right now, but if you joined, you could be my second in command! Willow Stones... and uh, you!" Willow said, walking away with the lion close behind. The lion looked down. Second in Command. That was a lot better than forager.
"Okay, then. I'll be Second in Command." he agreed.
"Great! But you need a name," Willow looked at the sun setting behind the mountains, "I guess I could go to the Willow and see what they think." he squinted.
"They?" the lion asked. But Willow grinned and kept walking.
The stars glimmered overhead as Willow Stones scrambled up a boulder, shooting an apologetic look before disappearing over the ledge. After a few long minutes, Willow jumped back down and purred, βYouβll be called Forest Runner, the guardians are watching over you.β
