Skepluvi - 137 - Event 028

Intake Report: Front Declaw | Scarring On Muzzle | Cropped Head Feather | Cropped Tail
"Everyone on the team was heartbroken upon hearing of the final two Skepluvias found at the trailer. As the final bodies were recovered for proper green burial, a volunteer mentioned that the smell of rot had curiously only gotten stronger over the past few days. Concerned by the comment, the team decided that despite the warnings of the building's imminent collapse, that a few members should do an in-depth sweep top to bottom over again. One member heard it first - a low whimpering rumble - then another felt the quiver of the wooden post holding the rafters up above their heads. A slow lift of their heads, their eyes landed on the shaking rafters - either someone was up there, or the whole place was about to come crashing down. Several members decided their fear was enough to send them spilling out the front doors, but a few others were not so easily turned away; with cautious tentative steps, they began stacking crates and bits of wooden planks together to form a makeshift step up to the top. Within the loft, pure horror awaited. Stacks of crates and carriers with tiny Skepluvias were scattered all over the place, many rotted down to bone, likely having passed away years ago. Several were instantly recognized as rittens, days old at best, while others were presumed to be pygmies. Judging simply by the pet-style carriers, handfuls of ripped off pet collars, and fake purebred paperwork found scattered around in broken cabinets, the team came to the conclusion that this section of the trailer was being used to harbor stolen or discarded 'pet quality' Skepluvias. Often this happens when people buy rittens on a whim without doing proper research, or when they go out to buy 'purebred pygmies' from disgusting backyard breeders and then come home with an animal that grows up to eight hundred pounds and is 'too much to handle'. These 'pets' are usually tossed aside, either abandoned or resold, and most end up in places like this - being bred back to back and kept in harrowing conditions to line the pockets of heartless humans in the exoctic pet trade. For the poor souls left up in these rafters, the prices on their heads were obviously not high enough for the sellers to care about them. The rescue team just didn't get there soon enough to save them - at least, not all of them. Once nearly all the cages were slowly and tediously pulled down and the bodies tenderly carried outside, just one large crate was left in the far back, a dirty torn sheet thrown over it. The wooden planks holding it up were bowed and creaking with every breath - but the team had to check it, just in case. As they tip-toed toward the cage, a short and faint whimper sounded out from inside. With eagerness and concern, the sheet was pulled away, only to reveal two small skepluvias inside. They were horrifyingly gaunt, their eyes sunken in as every bone in their body appeared to be poking through. Patches of skin showed through their mangy fur, with filth caked over it so thickly that it was impossible to tell what colors they were even supposed to be. Though they could not stand, the twins looked up at the humans peering into their crate, and they used what little energy they had left in their bodies to give a sweet smile and gently wag the stumps that used to be tails. The team wasted no time getting the two queens out of there, and rushing them back to the sanctuary clinic for life-saving emergency care. Once they were out of critical condition they were able to be fully inspected by the veterinary team. Number 137, or 'Equinox' as the sanctuary owner had been calling them, was a smaller skepluvi with a lax demeanor and a protective bond with their sibling. Their tail was a bit choppier than their twin's, the cropping job done poorly, and their front declaw was slightly more botched as well, leaving their front toes curled in on themselves. Their front head feather was also missing, though whether it was due to an odd crop job or a result from whatever injury also caused the muzzle scarring was uncertain. Whatever the case, Equinox appeared an otherwise healthy and sound Skepluvi to the amazement of the team. They obviously suffered from some balance issues stemming from their missing tail and had more difficulty living independently due to their inability to use their front paws, but to the staff it was nothing that couldn't be helped. A decision was made rather quickly as per the fate of the sweet little queen; Equinox and their sibling Solstice would be kept together, and given the best of care together as well - which meant Skepluvias Sanctuary would be keeping them as part of the Neverland Scuffle. The twins will need to be healed and trained together, given special daily care of hand feedings and detail grooming to get their skin and feathering back in good condition. From there, they can begin to learn what it's like to be real skepluvias, and be taught how to have fun and socialize with others properly. Their new life full of love and devotion awaits them, thanks to the hardworking staff of the 2019 rescue mission."
