First Tacking prompt:
First tacking.
Man, Ranea thought, this didn't seem like much tack but now it seemed an inconceivable amount. She was panting and sweat trickling down her forehead in the heat. And Mila?
Mila had wandered off to smell some orange cactus flowers. In her stall it had been a complete breeze to get her dark bridle, muzzle and rein on. But that ease quickly faded. While for a moment Mila had been interested in her new outfit she quickly bored and decided to investigate Ranea’s pockets. Perfect distraction, if Ranea had still been able to reach Mila’s back. Instead it ended up as circles. Finally after a fruitless while Ranea had almost smacked her head at her stupidity. She could just attach the rein to the side of the stable.
Or, she would have if in the fun Mila hadn't gotten it over her head and looped in head feathers. It was almost in reach, just… Mila pulled her head out of reach, making a sound of excitement and hopping in a playful way.
After a while almost being accidentally crushed by the large playful creature she opened the stall doors, hoping that being outside and having a little more room might help. It certainly helped one of them. But it wasn't Ranea. Every time she got on the saddle blanket, and occasionally the saddle Mila would wander off with every dark piece of tack dropping into the light sand behind her.
Beyond wits end, Ranea blew a short two tone whistle. Within moments another Skepluvi had arrived, pushing her nose into Ranea’s palm for scratches. This caught Mila’s attention and she finally stood still enough for tacking as she chattered and then groomed the other Skepluvi.
Once everything was secure Ranea stood back to admire her handiwork. The dark, almost black leather contrasted nicely with her coat while the maroon blanket and saddle brought out the rich brown tones in her fur. Ranea resisted the urge to grab the bronze chain of the reigns, just letting Mila getting used to the tack today. Not that it seemed to bother her, she was, yet again, distracted by other things.
