Dolcindum Dragons are a native species which inhabit the planet Ataru, which is located close to our own moon, and is roughly half the size of our own planet. While scientists and astronauts were at first wary of this strange planet they soon discovered that it contained conditions very similar to Earth, and the creatures who lived there had almost the same cognitive function as humans. They very quickly picked up on basic human speech, and formed good relationship with the human visitors.
These creatures were given the name Dolcindum, a mix of the Latin 'dolcis' (sweet, in regards to their nature), and 'rotundus' (rounded, referencing to their physical appearance), and Dragon in regards to their resemblance to the mythological creature. This name was made official with their permission, of course, who seemed delighted in having something to call themselves, and were also given the nickname 'Dolci's'.
Dolcindum Dragons are quite large, about the size of an elephant compared to a human. Their skin is described as being 'oddly soft and smooth, like snake skin, their underbellies being noticably more so', but they are also known for their strength. They a wide variety of of genes in their DNA, meaning they can come in all sorts of colors, and can have natural mutations.
Their intelligence well surpassed the expectations of the first humans to venture to Ataru, and both parties were eager to learn from each other. Humans learned that Dolci's had made dens from their planets natural resources and, when offering services from Earth, found their offer politely declined. These creatures preferred a much more rustic lifestyle, but welcomed advice when it came to strengthening housing areas and food production. Some scientists even lived on - for months at a time, teaching Dolci's about Earth, and in return learning about Ataru.
It was found that, although similar, Earth and Ataru had their differences. For starters, their sky was a noticably purple shade, rather than the blue humans were used to, due to different elements in their atmosphere. At night the stars were still visible, and maps of constellations were exchanged (and some new ones made, in good fun). Rainfall happened less frequently and so many dams had been built to conserve water, although it was shown that Dolci's drink less than humans. There are no oceans on Ataru, only rivers, streams, and lakes, and Ataru contained significantly less wildlife than Earth. A few species of birdlike creatures had evolved here, as had small fish and insects, but Dolcindum Dragons are predominantly the main species. Their diet is completely vegetarian, living from the nutrient rich food found to grow on this planet. Humans helped them to create better gardens, and to develop a fertilizer to help with production. The landscape itself is rather barren in some places, with many rocky hills and sandy stretches, but native forests are still to be found.
