Second Chance Shelter wrote: Second Chance Shelter is a dog and cat rescue where you can come to find a new member of your family. We rescue and rehabilitate dogs and cats of all shapes and sizes so they may have the chance to be placed into a caring home. All of our animals are special and deserve a chance to be happy with an owner that will care for them. The question is: are you ready to love them?
Backstory wrote:These two are offspring of puppy mill dogs! This month, the shelter used these two sweethearts as mascots for different pride parades and events. They're practically inseparable-- the American Eskimo seems to calm the Italian Greyhound with their presence, and the American Eskimo always flocks to their skinny buddy. They both seem to get easily distracted by their spray-painted tails, though.

You're welcome to try out for one, both, or with a partner! Bonus points if you're trying out with a partner, however. Extras are encouraged. (And the non-spray paint refs are underneath!)

PERSONAL INFORMATION wrote:
Personality: Despite the fact that Italian Greyhounds are often seen as delicate and thin, which certainly plays into the fact they are usually rather cautious, Ilene is much more mischievous. She's been spotted trying to steal from any surface that has some sort of item Ilene finds interesting. Despite her first disposition to crowds or those she is unsure of, she is willing to and enjoys entertaining others. While still being cautious and normally calm when alone, her quirks set her apart from most other small dogs.
Daily life: A delicate ray of mischievous sunshine known as Ilene, often prances early in the sunny mornings, especially summer, sunbathing around the flowers before her morning meal. Although mostly dry kibble, her owner occasionally adds in some other foods that are healthy for her and Marylin, one of her closest friends. While Mary's energy at first startled the thin and pale hound, she soon grew to enjoy her boundless joy and company, soon letting her confidence infect her slightly. During the day, she will sometimes accompany Mary on strolls or simply interacting with the customers in the shop, though she sometimes is a little weary at first until Ilene is calmed down and invited to join in by Mary or her owner. Sometimes she'll even model the merchandise that her owner puts out for pet owners. When in the shop alone with her human, due to stormy weather or just because the shop is closed due to a holiday, she gets a bit mischievous and tried to take things off her human's desk or work space most of the day. By the time the day is over she is tired out from being social, ready to curl up with her human as they listen to sounds of the forest playing on his phone. Always a perfect day for the little delicate flower.
History: The small dog was born to a pair of winning show-dogs, growing up trained to become tolerant to other dogs as well as various different grooming methods, clothes and being touched in sensitive areas. This was as a precaution for if those she is sold to wanted to put her into the showing industry. However she ended up in a home where they simply couldn't afford to, as well as had no interest to. Ilene, then named Snow, was owned by a rather young an snobby girl who found her to be weird and didn't get much love from her supposed owner due to this. However the older sister, who was then almost a young adult, seemed to give her the most attention. Ilene spent time with her in her room, listening to her read and trying to "help" with her studies. Unfortunately after the older sister left, the family suddenly had to move and leave Ilene behind due to the long trip and their new home not allowing pets. The small, pale dog was taken to the shelter before the family left the next day, leaving her in a state of distress and shock while she was left in a cold cage, given some attention occasionally by the busy staff members and volunteers. Other dogs in the other cages told them their stories, and she was simply glad to not have been cast out into the cold, uncaring world like they were, though she still didn't feel better about her situation. After a few weeks, she started giving up hope that someone would take her, as she watched cats and dogs be taken from their kennels and cages and set into new arms or given new leashes by their owners. This was until a tall, sweet smelling man approached the desk and insisted he go to Ilene's cage himself. She approached with caution at first but as the tall human opened the door and she noticed the new collar for her to wear, she wagged her tail meekly as she approached with happy whines. She was picked up and held close, no cage for her to be stuffed into for travel. She was allowed to watch as the cars went by, paws set on the window before a stop or two where she would return to her new human's lap. She adjusted well to her new home and housemates, that being another small dog and a fox, named Marylin and Datura, as well as being taught what not to sniff or nibble when it came to the plants.
How does she show her pride?: Living with a gardener and arranger means Ilene is around lots of pretty flowers. She often spends time with her owner while he puts together arrangements, nosing at certain nice smelling flowers to help in choosing which ones to use while the other dog, Marilyn, runs around in the garden to dig at the "varmints" that reside there. Starting on a sunny summer afternoon, early in June, a pride parade was happening in town. The parade was to be the first of many to happen over the coming years. Due to this her owner was bustling around the workshop, seeming busy and maybe a bit rushed. Swiftly taking out some string, wooden circles, bunches of fresh flowers that had just been collected. Blues, pinks, yellows, greys, whites, blacks, all of them. Necklaces, wreaths, decorations, her owner made them all in specific colors and patterns. Seeing flags of the same colors, she thought that they were special, picking up a specific one that seemed to draw her close. A floral necklace of pale pink, yellow and blue flowers, known as the pansexual flag to the humans though not to her immediately. Feeling immensely prideful as the floral arrangement laid across her thin shoulders. Prancing around and "rooing" happily, the small Italian Greyhound amused those who came in to purchase the newly made merchandise as her human displayed them towards the front window. Soon taking notice, a swift hand scooped her up, putting and end to her prancing and gently removed the wonderful live jewelry from her shoulders, her slightly whining as she saw him place it on the counter top as she was lowered towards the ground. The next year was the same, her sneakily trying to remove another one of the jewelry the human had made before being stopped. Due to how busy they got, she and Marilyn were only able to see the colorful parade from afar, the flags waving over her fencing. One year however, Ilene was surprised when her own owner took some flowers which she was allowed to be around and arranged them, pink, yellow and blue. Placing them around her head and onto her thin shoulder blades, she was allowed to wear her new treasure as they closed up the shop early to go look at the parade, the colors flashing with great pride as everyone around gazed at it. She couldn't have been happier. [400/400]
ILENE AND BLEU wrote:
How did you meet?: Ilene was enjoying the beautiful colors of Pride, the roaring and bustling of people not bothering her in the slightest as she pranced around her owner in excitement. Her owner proceeded to move around a bit to find a good place to sit down for a while, leaving Ilene to suddenly lose a flower in her lei without her noticing. Her human stopped after a while of looking, running into another human who seemed a tad distressed until they started talking. The pale spotted ears of Ilene turned her towards a particular direction nearby. Unsure about what she heard at first, she trotted a bit into the bustling crowd, coming across a fellow small, white dog who certainly was fluffier and bore rather bright colors on her fur. Ilene lightly barked to the dog, causing the two humans to come over as well to see what is going on, leading for the other human to become happy and pet this dog. As it turns out this dog's name was Bleu and this was her owner, who she lost while trying to find Ilene to give her the flower she unknowingly dropped. During their remaining time at Pride, the two small dogs chatted and interacted with one another, leading to future meetings since their owners did the same.
What is your relationship?: Despite the fact most times Ilene is rather docile around people and dogs she is unsure of, she and Bleu are very close and mischievous. Ilene mostly gets into trouble around her, trying to show off how she can be stubborn or brave too, though Ilene sometimes gets in trouble when she isn't around as well. They have a completely platonic teasing relationship and although Ilene isn't the best at giving back the teasing, shes stubborn enough and has enough energy to try and challenge Bleu, ending up with some snarky comments or jokingly rolled eyes. Overall, their relationship is positive to Ilene and she loves being around Bleu.
What do you think of how Bleu shows her pride?: Certainly reminiscent of their time in the shelter, Ilene loves seeing the colors in Bleu's coat. While Ilene doesn't exactly enjoy the paint herself due to it being cold and ending up in a bath, she still finds it very pretty to see and commends Bleu for putting up with being bathed afterwards, though with a small chase.

Personality: Nova is most definitely a chipper and bubbly canine, as well as being always filled with a seemingly endless energy. Before Nova was quite simply a dog frightened of its own thoughts and all the 'what ifs' in the world, but nowadays Nova has chosen to ignore those now. She's become an absolute ray of sunshine, though she can be rather cheeky at times. Admittedly a bit stubborn at times,
never really giving into something easily, but certainly filled with pure determination. If Nova sets her mind to something, in most cases, she accomplishes it (unless it is to grow wings and fly through the clouds). But overall, Nova is a jovial little sweetheart.

Personality: Despite the confident little model he has grown to be now, Sangria used to be rather introverted and quiet. He would always have to rethink his actions several times to see if they were a bad move in anyway, or if they would cause them consequences of some sort. Though when he started wearing pretty apparel of all sorts, he felt more proud and happy to be himself, and slowly began to become more social, and allowing mistakes to happen here and there. When he started to model, his confidence was raised by a great amount, and he barely felt like his old and quiet self. Now, Sangria is rather laid back and doesn't worry as much, and proud of himself. He certainly became a confident fellow, with a big heart as well.
Nova wagged her tail with excitement as she scrambled along the floor. Pride month seemed awfully nice, and considering the fact she'd be a mascot was even more nice! The nicest? Sangria would be a mascot along her side as well! She pranced happily around in circles, stoked for what was to come. Nova knew something was going to happen to her tail - something colourful! - but she didn't quite understand what.
"Stay still!" Her owner commanded. Nova skidded to a halt and twisted around to meet her owner's eye, and flopped her tongue out. They grinned, and Nova obidently stood still and waited for what was happening next. Nova's owner reached for a bag filled with something Nova didn't quite know, and instructed her to follow them outside.
Trotting out the door, she was commanded to stay still once more, and after a long while of her owner shouting her to stay still, some treats and drinks of water, Nova ended up with a beautifully coloured tail. It smelled odd, but Nova appreciated the change. I wonder if they're doing the same thing as Sangria! Her mind thought.
---
Sangria was in the shop, with a colourful tail and pieces of brightly coloured apparel, inspired by the pride flags. It was a bit quiet today, but all Sangria knew is that Nova would be prancing into the shop soon, and they'd be off to do... something he didn't quite know. Something to do wih pride, at least, which made him itch with anticipation.
A bubbly and distinctive bark sounded from the door, and within moments, a ball of white fluff came running in towards Sangria, and ultimately making him tumble backwards. It was none other than Nova! They played around for a moment before settling down, their tails wagging with excitement.
"Ready?" Nova asked, her tongue hanging from her mouth.
"Ready!" Sangria yipped.
