Crème ruffled her feathers, brimming with anticipation while she melted the wax. As experienced as she was in the art of candle making, she had yet to create a chocolate syrup scented one she was happy with. The last one had been too sweet smelling. The one before that not sweet enough.
It may not seem like such a big deal, but when Crème had trouble making something, it fueled her fire. She was determined to keep trying until she had made it just right. Her friends teased her for being such a perfectionist, but it was simply who she was.
Scents had always been her area of expertise. While other birds were in love with pretty appearances, or melodious sounds, it was scents Crème had fallen in love with. So much could be grasped just by one, simple but perfect scent.
She began by colouring the wax a pleasing shade of chocolaty brown, not unlike her the syrup that adorned her plumage. She needed her candle to look almost as enticing as it smelled. Making sure to stop before it hit the region of black, she decided she was satisfied with the presentation. To the hardest part - the fragrance itself.
She used a candle scent she had concocted herself, praying it was good enough. She gently spooned the oil into the bowl, sniffing it every step of the way. She finally decided that the scent was as perfect as it was going to get, and hoped it would stay that way.
She quickly added and secured the wick, her mind a jumble of scents, everything from bitter to sweet.
She had reached the hardest part - waiting. Four hours of it.
Now for the moment of truth, she thought anxiously. Would it be good enough? She leaned in close to the brownie coloured wax, and sniffed.
A strong, pure scent wafted up to greet her. Not overpowering, but firm. Just enough sweetness weaved in. A scent that smelled of one of the tastiest flavours in the world. Chocolate syrup.
