Sitting before the fireplace, Sparrow curled around the eggs that Emery had left him with. He wasn't ready for a family- he hadn't even found himself a mate yet. He and Emery were hardly more than acquaintances and it was just his luck that he ended up with the responsibility of caring for the kids. Even if he didn't know a thing about parenting, they would be safer in his little cabin than in the city. More room to grow and less trouble to get into.

He sighed and rested his head on his arms, watching his bird friend peck curiously at the eggs. The bird gave Sparrow a questioning glance, then flitted up to sit on top of one of them. It puffed out its chest proudly, as if to say "I'll take care of this one." Chuckling, Sparrow observed, "I don't think you're big enough to keep that warm, buddy." He drew his tail around the eggs, causing the bird to chirp indignantly at being jostled from its spot.

Turning his gaze to the window, Sparrow mused about having someone else there with him to protect the eggs. Someone bigger than a tiny bird living in the wreath around his neck. It wasn't the first time he imagined such a thing, but it certainly wasn't Emery he was thinking of. He was just a little too shy to say anything to that gator, so he convinced himself he was happy just being friends and didn't try to be anything more. It was easier that way.

The bird chirped again, interrupting Sparrow's train of thought. He looked down to see the egg it had perched on moving again, but this time it wasn't because he was moving it with his tail. The egg toppled over and rolled around until it ran into Sparrow's leg. A tiny crack appeared, then began to grow until a tiny yellow ball of fluff tumbled out. Sparrow stared at the baby gg that looked so much like him, not knowing how to react. When all he had were a couple of eggs, it hadn't quite felt real, but now he had an actual child staring back at him with his eyes. He leaned down to look at the kid eye level, and the little gator placed a stubby hand on his snout and smiled. He couldn't help but smile back. Maybe he could get used to this.
