when chi was about two and a half years old, she was sadly diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. thankfully, she survived it. sadly, chi suffered from severe hearing loss in both ears until she was completely deaf. during the times of hearing loss, chi's adoptive parent, cardinal, would always use the same bell to calm her down when she cried. the last sound chi ever heard was, in fact, the soft ringing of the bell. the bell, which she soon tied around her neck, still rings silently in her ears, forever taunting her craving for the musical chime of the bell.

I've been told many times what happened that wretched day, the day I lost my parents.

My uncle says that he'd brought me to the scorched remnants of my cottage as a final goodbye.
He speaks of how I'd slipped from his grip and wobbled to the rubble, how I'd extended my hand to pull a strip of my mother's ribbon from the debris. How I'd searched fervently through the charcoal only to find my father's bell.
He says that I expressed my loss through solemn silence.

Sometimes I wish that I'd retained the memories to match my uncle's stories.

Even when Kam is looking they still scamper through her stuff outside, much to her dismay. So in an evermore futile effort, Kam is almost always screaming and jingling her bell outside to scare them off.

Despite her parents insistence that it looks "charming" Millie often tries to bite off, or otherwise remove, the bell and ribbon from her neck. She secretly likes the way it looks even if it is very uncomfortable.

She ended up moving a year later and she still hangs onto the bell because it reminds Alisa of her memories and friends at the old school. The bell is actually silent. Mycroft found the burnt, badly damaged bell on a ship that had caught fire in the bay. He had been exploring after the wreckage had finally stopped smoking, and decided he wanted to check it out for any 'pirate's treasure'. After getting a few too many splinters and almost burning himself on a nail, Myc found this little bell tucked away in a corner of the husk of a ship. Always wanting to meet a pirate, Mycroft has vowed to return the damaged bell to its rightful owner.

Velvet knew that these two items were her mentor's greatest pride. The bell he retrieved from a sunken battle ship, and the ribbon was a delicate piece of silk, miraculously recovered from the late Queen's immersed treasure trove under the sea. Velvet also knew that her beloved mentor had meant for these items to be given to her, before his ship sailed into the disastrous storm.
